As "smart" as Scott Boras is, you have to wonder what he was thinking when he let Soriano decline the Yankees offer. Who would give him more than 13 million? dumbest move of the post season. In other words, folks are dreaming if they think Hanrahan will or should receive a qualifying offer from the sox next year, especially when we see what has happened with Soriano this year.

And for your laughable tweet of the day, Jon Heyman everybody @jonheymancbs: Jerry Sands is a terrific athlete w/power. High celing. Holliday type. Will be good get for #pirates if deal is finalized Peewee league football star Brian Holliday? Great deal for the Pirates.

If it's Sands and Pimentel, it's hard to see how anyone could be upset. Sands might still be a decent bench player, but his PCL stats are highly inflated and he's not a great defender at any position. Pimentel was going to be DFAed by July, if not sooner, so trading him now just saves some time.

Better yet, someone get the egggnog away from BC, unless the deal is just Sands and Pimental. Anything more for a so so reliever with control issues in his free agent year would be overpay.

I would think that there is another shoe to drop with Bailey going to the Tigers, Dodgers or Rangers.

perhaps this move means Napoli deal is close? ....or a move involving Bailey. Detroit needs a closer.

Wouldn' it have be as easy for Detroit to sign Wilson or have dealt for Hanrahan than deal for Bailey? Maybe Bailey goes to Toronto? Didn't they want him for Farrell?
Pimental is no loss. I still like Sands and despite knowing his stats are PCL inflated, I would have liked to have seen the Sox give him a chance rather than sign Gomes, but once they did, it became a moot point.
If Napoli falls thru, I'd like to see the Sox acquire Smoak, who I think will eventually become a good player.

Jon Heyman @jonheymancbs #pirates will get 4 players in trade that is being finalized. They include sands and pimental. #hanrahan

Alex Speier is reporting that there are more bodies in the deal than just Hanrahan, Sands and Pimental. That does not sound good, unless it consists of one can of spaghetti going each way.

Heyman says its a 4 for 2.
I'd think at least one more 40 man roster player is going the other way. I still think it has to be another pitcher. Will be interesting to see if the player the Red Sox get back is a roster player or throw away prospect.

Anyone complaining about Ben trading a garunteed DFA candidate and player whose ceiling is a bench/platoon player for a closer who has been an All-Star the past two years needs to just keep their thoughts to themselves.
EDIT: Nvm, apparently there is more to this deal

Before people start worrying too much with Pimental and Sands being mentioned already I'd assume the other two players would be of lesser value then those two.

Seems unlikely, but any one think that Saltalamacchia could be one of the extra pieces? They could use him at 1st base and move Garrett Jones to the OF permanently.

Looking at his game logs it looks like he had a bad sept. 10 of his 36 walks were in that stretch as well giving up 4 runs in his last 6 innings. Depending on who the other two players are I like this. Also are we sure Detroit is looking for a closer? They have that rookie who they are high on and if they wanted one why not trade for Hanrahan? www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.cgi?id=hanrajo01&t=p&year=2012

Sands is a nice pickup for the Pirates. He's like a young RHH Garrett Jones. If he hit lefty he'd be on the Sox bench.

Seems unlikely, but any one think that Saltalamacchia could be one of the extra pieces? They could use him at 1st base and move Garrett Jones to the OF permanently. Seems unlikely. Saltalamacchia's main value is that he has more pop than most catchers. He's below average offensively for a first baseman. The power might play up some more if he didn't have the wear and tear of catching, but it's hard to take a sub-.300 OBP at a premium offensive position. In 198 innings over the last three years, Hanrahan has a 2.73 ERA, 226 K's, and only 78 walks (about 3.5 per nine). It's hard to tell with relievers whether single-season regressions are signs of decline or just small sample-related noise. Hanrahan's walk rate was too high this year, but he balanced it with a great strikeout rate, and he has really good fastball. That fastball dropped from 97.1 to 95.9 this year, but that's still excellent. He's a strict two-pitch fastball/slider type, traditional bullpen right who keeps it simple and puts people away with power stuff. Here's my bit of idle speculation: It seems like a lot of people think Bailey might be dealt now, though I'm unsure. I'd guess that his value would be at an all time low, though it takes only one GM to disagree. I wouldn't be entirely shocked to see Hanrahan flipped instead.

It seems they don't have confidence in Bailey for this year. He's under our control for another two years 2013-2014 and we paid plenty to get him. Maybe the plan is for him to be ready to close in 2014?
