Webster, Barnes, Montas and Buttrey going for the affiliates, Workman pitching for the Big Club, and Ranaudo pitching in the Futures ... good pitching day for the Sox system!
And with Cecchini and Bogaerts in the Futures stepping up for the positional players, too ...

Yep should be a great day to follow everything. Hopefully the guys at the future game give us something to get excited about.

Good AB for Xander. Base hit back up the middle.

Barnes and Webster really disappointing with their performances. Barnes goes 3 innings and throw 82 pitches!

Ramos 2-3, 2B, 2BB... nice day for him, BA up to .273 now. Buttrey with a nice enough outing, though in NYPL instead of SAL, I'm not too excited yet.
Random note on Ramos... 9 SB this year, and 10 CS. Woof.

If Barnes gets through a full season and can sprinkle in a few decent-to-good starts in there, I'll be happy. Still building up strength.. next year, presumably starting at Portland, will be the show-me year. If he wants to be the #2-3 SP he was thought to be, he's got to show it then. Next year he'll be in AA, late season AAA, and not R5D eligible till after the season (with a ton of swingman replacements ahead of him Ranaudo/Aceves/Britton/Workman).

Aceves outrighted off the 40-man roster and assigned to Pawtucket. Everyone in the league passed on him. Stunning.

All Aceves has going for him is that he has a "live arm" that managers aren't afraid to abuse and he's still on his last option year. His peripherals are mediocre-to-terrible at both AAA and the majors this year and he's got a history of being a crazy person. At this point, he's behind Workman, Webster, De La Rosa, and Wright on the SP depth chart and even as a reliever he's probably behind Wilson, Beato, and De La Torre. If he asked for his release, the Red Sox front office would probably grant it.

I like Aceves better than most... but in Workman you have a durable swingman who has flashed quality stuff, but may not be able to hold it deep enough to be a SP long-term, but can give you a few good starts when you need it. My only worry is that if injury/ineffectiveness hits Workman, I don't feel as comfortable messing with RP-SP-RP/stretching out fast with Britton, and absolutely no way with Ranaudo/Morales/RDLR/Wright (injuries/knuckle). There is value to an arm that can play in RP/SP roles, and not just as a SP on the I95 shuttle. I guess if you like Webster >>> Aceves, then that's the answer.
I wonder if Aceves wants to be injured for service time/salary reasons? Anyone know if that matters, if he was 60 day DL'd vs DFA-outright, and maybe that's why he said he was injured and the Red Sox said no?

Problem child or not, the dude is a cheap pitcher with an option. I'm stunned a team couldn't even have used him for long relief. Pedro freaking Ciriaco even drew interest.

If he were sick of the I-95 shuttle, it'd make sense for him to fake an injury in Boston to go on the DL. Would explain why he was placed on outright waivers if the team saw through it.

The way he came out of that game was weird. Followed by being outrighted. It is a weird situation. I wouldn't be shocked to learn there was a non-baseball reason for the move. Do you even see them wasting a spot in Pawtucket on him at this point?
