2013 All-Star Voting - Outfielders
|
Post by Kevin Pereira on Sept 7, 2013 14:02:44 GMT -5
Place your vote for the player that you feel had the best season in 2013. Please do not vote based on who you think is the best prospect or who you think may perform better in the future, and please only consider minor league performance. Note that positional eligibility was determined by the SoxProspects Staff, primarily based on the number of games played per position. This poll will close on Thursday, September 12. All stats are cumulative for all Red Sox minor league affiliates. Full stats are available here: www.soxprospects.com/stats/hitting.phpLuis Alexander Basabe (DSL) .225/.385/.321 1 HR 49 BB 18 SB Bryce Brentz (PAW/GCL) .262/.312/.487 19 HR 21 BB 1 SB Jackie Bradley, Jr. (PAW) .275/.374/.469 3 HR 41 BB 7 SB Keury De La Cruz (SAL) .258/.297/.398 9 HR 31 BB 16 SB Alex Hassan (PAW/GRE) .338/.457/.471 4 HR 46 BB 0 SB Brandon Jacobs (POR/SAL) .247/.335/.448 11 HR 33 BB 10 SB Jeremy Hazelbaker (PAW) .257/.313/.374 11 HR 36 BB 37 SB Bryan Hudson (GCL) .304/.406/.348 0 HR 23 BB 6 SB J.C. I'll go back and change it.
Thanks jchang! It certainly makes it easier to read.

Two related comments:
Citing the offensive stats is of course necessary, but I think it unconsciously encourages voters to ignore the other half of the game. If Clay Davenport's site hadn't been messed up the last 10 days or so, I would have posted his defensive numbers for everyone in the system. If I do that next year, you might want to include them! Even if folks disbelieve them, it will remind them to factor it in.
I'm writing in Margot, whom, when you consider defense (i.e., reports of it being tremendous, and, last time I was able to check, +33 runs / 150 games) is, I think, almost certainly deserving.

I was looking for Margot on here as well He had a sub-.700 OPS. He sticks in our heads because he had that eight-game hot streak after he came off the DL when he went 17 for 38, .447/.475/.658, but after that he collapsed (4 for 33, .121/.216/.152 in 9 games) and his numbers leading up to the DL stint were pedestrian, at least in terms of all-star discussion (.254/.343/.307 in 32 games). As a result his .270/.346/.351 line was judged to be wanting. If you want, write him in and only vote for two guys, but I'm perfectly ok with the decision to leave him off the poll.

My own opinion, but I put absolutely zero stock in minor league defensive numbers. Sorry. Maybe sometime you can explain to me in an off-topic post why they're not useless - my thought being that when we don't even have universally accepted defensive stats at the major league level, anything that might rely on how minor league games are scored is going to be even less useful - but even with someone like Davenport doing them, I just don't put much stock in that. In the past, I know that our readers have used their understandings of respective players' defense to at least help when guys are close. I continue to trust that they will vote in an educated manner.

In the past, I know that our readers have used their understandings of respective players' defense to at least help when guys are close. I continue to trust that they will vote in an educated manner. Clay's numbers correlate to the scouting reports in just about precisely the manner Bill James has suggested any good metric ought to: most of the time they verify what we thought was true, maybe one time in five they contradict it. They certainly feel meaningful. I value scouting reports first and foremost for ml defense. When Clay's number's agree, that makes me trust the reports all the more. When they disagree, it causes me to keep an open mind (i.e., maybe Cecchini and Hassan are better than advertised, and Brentz is worse). In this case, the scouting reports say Margot was tremendous, and Clay's numbers agree. And note that those numbers begin with the simple ratio of balls he caught to balls he fielded after they fell in for hits. There is no planet on which that ratio is completely meaningless, no matter who is doing the official scoring. The other question: are we supposed to factor in age relative to level? I would certainly think so. When you do that for Margot, his batting line is perfectly respectable.

As noted in the initial post, we shouldn't be voting for who we think is the best prospect or who we think will have the best career, but rather who had the best year. Given that criteria, I see little reason to factor in age.

Re: age, I think it's fine to use as a tiebreaker or something. Again, the point is to vote for who had the best season, not who is the best prospect or even who had the best prospect-status season.
Eric, I'll start a thread in the off-topic forum if you want to explain those numbers.
