Current Draft Order 30.Boston Qualifying Offers (13, in draft order): 32.Morales (SEA) 33.Cano (MFY) 34.Granderson (MFY) 35.Kuroda (MFY) 36.Santana (KC) 37.Choo (CIN) 38.Cruz (TEX) 39.Jimenez (CLE) 40.McCann (ATL) 41.Drew (BOS) 42.Ellsbury (BOS) 43.Napoli (BOS) 44.Beltran (STL)
* Comp. picks are successive if the team has more than one.
Players in strike-through are likely to resign with their teams (or retire), so may drop from list, which would move our picks to 39, and 40. If the 10 others sign with a team having picks #11-31, our first pick of #30 might slide down, potentially 10 slots to 20st.
It is conceivable our comps, if the 39th and 40th, could slide to 29 and 30

With Brian McCann signing, Yankees lose first pick, moving everyone up:
Current Draft Order 29.Boston Qualifying Offers (13, in draft order): 31.Morales (SEA) 32.Cano (MFY) 33.Granderson (MFY) 34.Kuroda (MFY) 35.Santana (KC) 36.Choo (CIN) 37.Cruz (TEX) 38.Jimenez (CLE) 39.McCann (ATL)(for signing with Yankees) 40.Drew (BOS) 41.Ellsbury (BOS) 42.Napoli (BOS) 43.Beltran (STL)
Players in strike-through are likely to resign with their teams (or retire), so may drop from list, which would move our picks to 38, 39 and 40. If the 9 others sign with a team having picks #11-31, our first pick of #29 might slide down, potentially 9 slots to 20st.
It is conceivable our comps, currently 40 to 42, could slide to 28, 29 and 30

Anyone have any thoughts on Braxton Davidson? I don't know a ton about him, but I've heard that his bat has the potential to be special, and while he may end up at 1B, there's a chance he sticks in RF, and according to BA he should be available when we pick.

I have had my eyes on him but he's generally regarded as the best HS bat in the class, pure bat Alex Jackson has more upside. He apparently is the son of a red Sox area scout or associate scout, I heard it in an interview he did with PG. It way early to even think about who could be available, I remember Swihart was regarded as a potential top 10 pick early so we'll see. It does look like a stronger year, wish we had a top 10 pick this year....yes I know I'm greedy.

Guessing he probably won't be there when we pick, but I would definitely love to see him in a sox uni. It's too early to tell where he would land though.

A few names im pretty interested in for the Sox are 1b/Of Braxton Davidson, Inf Jack Flaherty, Inf Michael Chavis, C/Of Jackson Reetz, Rhp Luke Weaver. Im guessing they're gonna have their own, plus 2 from Drew and Ells.

Is anyone else also excited at the prospect (pun completely intended) of having a higher bonus pool that is associated with the 3 comp picks? If we had more bonus pool money last year from several extra picks one could only speculate that they would have signed one of Boldt, Sheffield or a combination of one of those guys plus 1 or two others. We can only speculate who the Ryan Boldt or the Jordan Sheffield of 2014 will be, but they will be there. And I'm sure there will end up being a few top 100/50 draft prospects in the later rounds that we can pick up and sign if they play there cards right.

I'm more excited about drafting several good players who are likely to sign, regardless of $ vs slot, than hoping to squeeze in a late round bankshot or two.

I used to question whether it was wise for the players' association to allow the restrictive rules on amateur spending. I thought owners would pocket the savings but I'm beginning to see the light. While some owners will indeed pocket it all the players' association need is for a couple of teams to feel the need to spend and there is nothing else really that teams can spend money on other than middling free agents that will likely offer teams a little value in the short term and no value long term.
In other words the market has an overflow of cash that teams used to spend on amateur talent someone is going to get it no matter if they are any good.

True. A restrictive amateur market and now international market has pushed much of the cash to the free agent market. Unions usually like more money for "proven" veterans. I would like however to see MLB add in a tougher salary floor or another system to insure less teams, perhaps only a handful, don't pocket the extra cash and instead put it towards the talent.

Giving effect to Ellsbury signing:
Current 2014 MLB Draft Order (June 5-7, 2014)
1st Round (Protected) 1. HOU 2. MIA 3. CWS 4. CHC 5. MIN 6. SEA 7. PHI 8. COL 9. TOR 10. NYM 11. TOR (Phil Bickford compensation pick)

With Brian McCann and Jacoby Ellsbury signing, Yankees lose first pick and their first comp pick:
Current Draft Order 29.Boston Qualifying Offers (13, in draft order): 31.Morales (SEA) Cano (MFY) [Likely to be lost for Ellsbury] 32.Granderson (MFY) 33.Kuroda (MFY) 34.Santana (KC) 35.Choo (CIN) 36.Cruz (TEX) 37.Jimenez (CLE) 38.McCann (ATL)(for signing with Yankees) 39.Drew (BOS) 40.Ellsbury (BOS) 41.Napoli (BOS) 42.Beltran (STL)
If the 11 remaining QO free agents sign with a team having picks #11-28, our first pick of #29 might slide down, potentially 11 slots to 18th.
It is conceivable our comps, currently 39 to 41, could slide to 28, 29 and 30

In the new CBA, clubs with multiple compensation picks draft in succession. So any Yankee picks would be before KC, and our other one or two picks would precede the Cards' for Beltran.

Going through the list there is already a pitcher that already caught my eye as possible Red Sox targets:
Keaton McKinney: Strong projectable right-hander, already mid 90s, great change-up, curve-ball needs to come along. Sounds familiar. Oh forgot to mention he's a two-way player.
Edit: As for hitters....
I really like someone that I don't want to mention but he really doesn't fit what the Red Sox have been doing lately....Oh god I already have my draft crush and draft season hasn't even started. Help me end my misery.....#DraftJunkieProblems

Just when I thought I knew the new system I realize I DON'T! so my question is this, our compensation picks for players who turn down qualifying offers protected? In other words when the Yankee signed Ellsbury will they lose their first Comp pick? or will they lose their 2nd round pick?
