Ben Badler reported earlier today that RHP Vladimir Gutierrez left the Cuban team yesterday while in Puerto Rico for the Caribbean Series, and the assumption is that he (along with SS Danier Moreira) will attempt to defect. Gutierrez was Badler's 12th ranked player in his Cuban player rankings. He is also 19, throws up to 93, has arguably the best curveball in Cuba, and has a projectable frame at 6-3, 170. www.baseballamerica.com/international/vladimir-gutierrez-top-cuban-pitching-prospect-leaves-team-caribbean-series/Badler did a podcast today with JJ Cooper and they discussed the possibility that, given the new MLB policy, Gutierrez could be cleared to sign before June 15 provided he seeks residency fairly quickly. Things seem relatively uncertain at this point, but he is definitely someone to keep an eye on.

Changed the name of the thread. Figured when we start hearing rumblings for the 2015 J2 signing period, those should go in a new thread, and we can keep this one for any signings during the current signing period. Work?

Interesting twist with Gutierrez: Jesse Sanchez reports he has applied for asylum in Puerto Rico, which means he would be subject to the draft (instead becoming an international free agent). It is an curious decision because he would probably miss out on a serious payday, but I'm sure there are probably other logistical reasons, including the fact he was in Puerto Rico when he defected. There is still a chance he could seek residence in another country after he gains asylum (which would put him back in the IFA category). m.mlb.com/news/article/108494488/defected-cuban-pitcher-vladimir-gutierrez-seeks-political-asylum

It appears there is a small flood of players coming out of Cuba. That's going to increase the talent level in MLB. Good to see and I the Sox get a couple more.

Law of unintended consequences. We'll lose out on the flood because most will get cleared only after June 30th. We should change the title of this thread to "2014-15, Last dance before we sit it out"

What is the seasonality of any possible pop-up, non-Cuban guys? Aren't there often a few Dominican, Venezuelan, etc guys who slipped through the cracks who start to show some promise and sign late? I wasn't sure of the time frame of showcases in these countries. As I recall there are usually a couple of guys who sign way late in the period who may not be top tier but are worthy of a decent investment. For all the talk of the tax overages, dollar for dollar with these Cuban investments I think given the history of low investment guys who have panned out from more traditional countries that throwing an extra couple hundred grand around on some raw athletes would be palatable in additon to any interest in Cuban defectors given the impending restrictions.

I would suppose that Espinosa will be pitching the full year in the DCL, but I can dream of him being able to throw a few innings in the GCL.

You are absolutely right. There are some Dominican Kids that are 17 or 18 and thus aren't getting a ton of money. Some of these guys throw in the mid 80s today but a couple of them will one day throw in the mid 90s.

For those that were asking for pop up guys:
"@kileymcd: Heard some pre-workout buzz on 18 year old 6'3 Cuban RHP Yadiel Alvarez. It checks out: 93-96 touching 97 mph w/plus slider & usable changeup"
"@kileymcd: Got down close for Alvarez' second inning. Threw a lot of changeups & it's more than usable. New name to many scouts & he's gonna get paid."
"@kileymcd: For those asking, Alvarez is subject to the pools & is very likely to sign before July 2. The typical big spending intl teams will be on him."
"@kileymcd: Shoutout to the intl scout who told me two weeks ago to get a late flight for today because he heard the Cubans were working out; he's legit"
"@kileymcd: I'm told Alvarez's paperwork isn't done as he's still pretty new to the DR. Expectation is that it'll take a month or two to clear him."

Kiley McDaniel ?@kileymcd 1h1 hour ago Yadier Alvarez is the hottest name in baseball; here's video of him hitting 97 today in his 2nd outing for scouts …
He's an 18 year old RHP and would make a fine addition to Espinoza and Acosta. He's listed at 6'3"/175, Moncada now has IFA company. I think most of the other serious Cubans being showcased right now are pro's not IFAs. I'm not sure about Daniel Alvarez, RH outfielder, he's close either way but I did read where the Sox have been to a workout. I'm not familiar yet with Rivera.

“@pgammo: OK, so it's five teams over $70M on Hector Olivera. But I still wish the Brothers Gourriel could play in The States” Wow that's pretty crazy from what my impression started out on him. That's Castillo money for a guy 3 years older who sounds like an average infielder.

$12m a year for an average infielder is just about the going rate these days, though. That said, since he's already 30 (and maybe even older; it's difficult to verify his age), the fact that he's getting 5 or more years is a surprise.
