This could be fun. Completely healthy and that lineup doesn't look too scary. 7-9 is Gardner, Roberts and Kelly Johnson. Gonna need their pitching to bail them out. CC throwing 88mph bb's all night. We usually have a Yankee thread. And, mods feel free to change the title if they get hot amfox1 edit: thread title changed

Yeah, the two things that have me most excited about this season are a) the possibility the Sox repeat, and b) the possibility the Yanks miss two straight post-seasons... while getting older... and losing jeter... and mo... and a-roid.

Still early, but I want to see the buyers' remorse for Ellsbury played out on the Daily News/Post pages.

Still early, but I want to see the buyers' remorse for Ellsbury played out on the Daily News/Post pages. Those sportswriters are drama queens with knives, I wouldn't wish that on a dog. And it may be less of an issue in NY. That team is really built for the short right field porch, the one sitting in the wind tunnel. But man, that infield is filled with a lot of players past their pull dates. Watched McCann butcher a few playing catcher, also. They need Cervelli back there, so the plate police will probably lose him to DH.

A non-playoff season would be great. If they keep batting Jeter second...I think that's a real possibility.

And they blew another one last night. Old friend Josh Fields with a perfect 9th for his 1st save. Is he really going to be Houston's closer this year?

Bo Porter didn't want to commit to a closer so far, threatening to spread the saves around. When asked how he will handle the poor pitchers not knowing what their role is, he had this awesome reply:

A non-playoff season would be great. If they keep batting Jeter second...I think that's a real possibility. If they do miss the playoffs this year, I really don't believe they have a shot to make it next year either. Jeter, Kuroda, Soriano, and Robertson are all FA. Jeter and probably Kuroda will not be back, Soriano can be reasonably replaced for the money Yanks owe them, and Robertson will probably resign with a raise. Ichiro is gone also, but Gardner will be getting a raise that will offset his salary. The big thing though is Arod is back on the books at a little less than Jeter and Kuroda's salary. So theoretically they have almost no money to spend next year also, and their farm will not be able to fill those positions reasonably. Big wild cards for the Yankees are Pineda and Betances. Pineda could turn out to be the next Nova, and Betances the next Robertson, which would go a long way.

Jeter's range is just laughable at this point.

Wow, the writer really screwed up the picture. It's Kelly Johnson, not Ellsbury. Probably should do his job first, before complaining about others.

And god help us he will get a farewell tour as well. I really hope this doesn't become the norm. The whole Mariano thing was overplayed last season IMO.

Jeter's range is just laughable at this point. I could watch that gif for hours ... it's the little wave of the glove when the ball is still eight feet away that makes me chuckle every time. edit to add: Oh, and also, this post is funny to me.

Damn. I was hoping they'd preserve the perfect record they laid down in their first two games.
Nova walked 5 and gave up 6 hits over 5 2/3s. Any non-AAA team would've wrung 3 or 4 more runs out of him. That staff could be a disaster without Tanaka. Still wishing he went anywhere else.

But, they are putting a lot of pressure on him to be a top of the rotation guy. Most reports say he's better than Dice-K but not as good as Darvish coming out of Japan. Darvish was 16-9 with a 3.90 ERA his rookie year. ERA+ 112.

BP's Pebble Hunting: The best pitches through the week (paywall) included this, from Matt Albers vs. Brian McCann: Check out where the catcher ends up putting his glove on that pitch. This is part of a story about how Albers got eight swings and misses in just fourteen pitches. There's not a lot of precedent for that in the list they give from last year. Webster got the most in one inning - eleven - but it took him eight batters.
Albers' control issues have largely evaporated, just like that ball seems to do. He's a very good reliever, and someone who should thrive as the stopper for the Astros.

It amuses me that Matt Albers and Josh Fields are the two best relievers in that bullpen.
