The rotation matches up nicely. That Friday game... Man I'm looking forward to that. Too bad we don't have middlebrooks ready to tee off on that 88mph fastball. Not only do we miss Tanaka but Tanaka lost last night to the O's!

Go for the sweep, send Yankee nation into a panic. Get into that shallow bullpen early.

Just made one big mistake to Schoop that cost them the game.

Tanaka looks interesting. I can't quite get a full read on him and I've watched him a lot so far. If he doesn't clean up some things, like leaving a few fat pitches up in the zone, come summer he could be giving up a lot of HRs. He's striking out a lot of guys so far, which is a little surprising. I wonder if that lasts.

Go for the sweep, send Yankee nation into a panic. Get into that shallow bullpen early. If ever there was a team vulnerable to the "grind out at-bats to get to the bullpen" approach, it's these Yanks. Pretty good starting pitching but a bad bullpen ... And, yeah, this is pretty much the perfect set of pitching matchups, with the possible exception of the second game; I suspect Lester's quite a bit better than CC at this point.

The Ks are definitely real-- the splitter has the highest whiff rates of all pitches, and Tanaka has a great one, along with another above-average secondary pitch in his slider. He's probably not going to maintain his 11.57 K/9, but I think he's going to end up maintaining something just shy of a strikeout an inning. He's getting a lot of ground balls, too. So far, he looks like a really, really good pitcher, but we'll see what happens when the league has gotten a better read on him.

I'm not a huge fan of the roster construction as we move into this series.
I wonder if we see an adjustment or two today or through the weekend.

After Koji retires, I hope they hire him to roam the minors to teach the splitter to every single pitcher we have.
Also, can we extend him for another 2 years soon? It's time.

The rotation matches up nicely. And our lineup matches up nicely with their bullpen too. With Shane and WMB out we are susceptible to good left-handed pitching ... which is not what Thornton, Cabral and Nuno are expected to provide at all.

Who is the bigger divisional threat, the O's or Yanks? I can see the case for either.

It's no surprise Tanaka is for real. He may even get better. He's going to give up a gopher ball once in a while but he's probably a top 10 pitcher in the AL this year and I'd give him a 40% chance of being top 5 if he stays healthy.

Tanaka will be solid, but I don't think he is will be an "Ace" by the true definition. There just isn't the scouting reports out on him that there are other players. He's averaged in Japan a k/9 of 8.5, which is great, but it's a number I expect to drop playing in the MLB. As you start to see him more than one and more video is available hitters are going to do a better job at laying off that splitter, which has been making them look foolish so far.

Buck to the DL, De La Soul/Rosa up...
Ah, just wishful thinking.
I do think Rubby will have the better results tonight, but I'm still hoping for two wins this eve...
in other news, here's a post from late last night ...
B Gardner doubled to deep right. D Jeter sacrificed to pitcher, B Gardner to third. B Matusz relieved E Meek. J Ellsbury fouled out to third. C Beltran intentionally walked. B McCann flied out to center.
so my math may be off, but Gardner doubles and 60 million or so couldnt get him home?
Jeter's bunt was cowardly.
El Capitain looks about as agile as Papi t this point.
Seriously, 50 yard dash with Papi, Jeter, CC, and Ditka...the smart moneys gotta go with Ditka, right?

And it worked brilliantly.

Which is what made el Capitain's bunt so foolish.
No extra out and it is a whole different inning.

Which is what made el Capitain's bunt so foolish. No extra out and it is a whole different inning. They actually call him "El Capitán América" down in the Dominican sometimes. Its pretty bad. They were desperate for a run but they could have scored on a squeeze play with ellsbury bunting. The Reds also stranded Billy Hamilton on third yesterday with no outs. Sometimes you need to just get that guy in by any means necessary.
