First one has Owen #2 and Mookie #3: www.baseballamerica.com/minors/prospect-hot-sheet-april-11-joc-pedersons-wide-ranging-tool-set-plays-at-triple-a/2. Henry Owens, lhp, Red Sox Team: Double-A Portland (Eastern) Age: 21 Why He’s Here: 1-0, 1.00, 2 GS, 13 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 18 SO The Scoop: When he’s at his best, Owens is as unhittable as anyone in the minors. He had a 19-inning hitless streak last year, he struck out 13 of 15 batters he faced in an intrasquad game in spring training last year, and he began 2014 by pitching the first six innings of a rain-shortened no-hitter on Opening Day. Hitters just can’t get a good read on Owen’s fastball and struggle to pick up his changeup. When he’s also locating his curveball, hitters don’t really have much of a chance. ... 3. Mookie Betts, 2b, Red Sox Mookie BettsTeam: Double-A Portland (Eastern) Age: 21 Why He’s Here: .464/.531/.750 (13-for-28), 6 R, 3 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 4 BB, 3 SO, 2-for-3 SB The Scoop: Betts has carried the momentum of a tremendous 2013 (.314/.417/.506 with 15 homers and 38 steals) into 2014. He began the season going 4-for-4 with a home run against Reading and has not slowed down, continuing to show excellent plate discipline. Though small (5-foot-9, 170 pounds), he has quick hands to generate extra-base power. He’s blocked at second base in Boston by Dustin Pedroia, and while the Red Sox talked about getting Betts some time at shortstop this year, so far he’s stayed exclusively at second base. Chat: Matt (MA): If 2B is Betts best position for the majors what would be the second best option? SS? CF? Matt Eddy: I think that, historically, most converted second basemen move to third base or left/center field. I would expect the Red Sox to explore LF first given their depth at the other positions.

To me is a player dominates at AA then he can play for the big boys. I believe in Betts and if Petey injury is serious then it's a sign to promote the kid. Forget about the 4A players.

Yes, those 9 games in AA ball have sealed his fate as a future all-star, likely HOF'er. Seriously, I love Mookie (almost, apparently) as much as the next guy. But let's give the guy some time to finish his development. He's far from a finished product.
IN addition, he'd have to be added to the 40-man, so they'd have to let someone go. And, you'd be burning an option, which may or may not be needed down the road. Bringing up Betts now would be foolish, reactionary, and incompetent organization management

Rijo, Mookie, Margot, Devers (the last three only in chat): www.baseballamerica.com/minors/prospect-hot-sheet-april-18-jon-singleton-assaults-pcl-pitchers/IN THE TEAM PHOTO ... Wendell Rijo, 2b, Red Sox: As if the Red Sox needed another smallish second baseman who can flat out hit. The 18-year-old Rijo has excellent barrel control with a mature hitting approach, which is why he’s hitting .306/.457/.452 through 11 games for low Class A Greenville. www.baseballamerica.com/minors/prospect-hot-sheet-chat-with-ben-badler-april-18/MJ (ST Louis): Are the Red Sox still considering giving Mookie Betts some time at shortstop? If not, is he more or less trade bait for them? Ben Badler: It’s not out of the question, although I don’t think they’re going to put him there. It’s not like there’s a clear path to shortstop in Boston right now either. … Nick (Washington DC): Hi Ben, thanks for the chat. If Mookie Betts does essentially what he did last year at two levels (this year at AA and AAA) where would you see him ranking in the offseason prospect rankings? Obviously a big if, but he's off to a ridiculous start... Ben Badler: I had him at No. 40 on my list coming into the year. I don’t think top 20 is unreasonable if he continues tearing it up the rest of the season, which I think he will. … Jon (Boston): Hi Ben, Manuel Margot has showed a little pop to go along with his speed. What does he need to do to improve as a hitter? Is he a guy that could really climb up prospect lists this year? Ben Badler: See more breaking balls, learn which ones he can handle and which ones he should lay off. Other than that, wow. There’s tremendous upside here between his glove, speed and offensive potential. The fact that the power is starting to come on so quickly this year is exciting. One of my favorite breakout candidates, although I guess I’ve been saying that for a couple of years now. … Ryan (Baltimore): How would you compare Rafael Devers and Luis Encarnacion? Will they both be playing in the States this summer? Ben Badler: Two of the best bats on the international market last year. Devers more of a pure swing, but Encarnacion hit a ton in games and showed some more raw power than Devers, although I think they’ll both have plenty of power. Encarnacion’s a LF/1B type, whereas Devers has a chance to stay at third, although he’s going to have to work to stay there. Encarnacion’s coming to the GCL and Devers might join him there, although last I heard the Red Sox were still undecided about whether they were going to bring him over yet.

Noel (Portland, Oregon): Is Mookie Betts now the best 2b prospect in the minors?
J.J. Cooper: Still would say Odor because he's more physical, but the margin is pretty slim. Betts is really, really good.

Great BA podcast here. All you can ask for as a Sox fan...drooling over the Sox system, and ripping on Eric Jagielo and the Yanks system.

Great BA podcast here. All you can ask for as a Sox fan...drooling over the Sox system, and ripping on Eric Jagielo and the Yanks system. Any guesses as to who he is referring to at 12:36? A lesser known red sox pitching prospect who kind of "rocked his world." I'll guess we'll know on Fri as there is a report on this mystery pitcher coming up.

I was wondering that too. They mentioned that they hadn't seen Mookie, so it's probably not Portland, and they mentioned that it was an unheralded guy, so it's probably not Pawtucket. My guess is Mercedes or one of the Greenville guys (Kukuk/Stank/Callahan).

I'd guess Mercedes because of all the WOW tweets during one of their views. Although it could also be Diaz who impressed them sitting 93/95 and pitching effectively (one tweet said 50 pitches in 5 innings). The two pitchers piggybacked that game. Edit. It was Josh Norris. Here are the tweets. Note who he was going to the game to see and "he's a dude" : Josh Norris ?@jnorris427 5h Winston Salem tonight for Simon Mercedes and some note Courtney Hawkins and Tim Anderson and Jacob May. #WhiteSox #RedSox Josh Norris ?@jnorris427 5h Then this weekend I'll check out Scranton and, if I have my schedules straight, Greenville. #yankees #redsox Josh Norris ?@jnorris427 4h Salem RHP Luis Diaz sitting between 93-95 here in Winston Salem. #RedSox Josh Norris ?@jnorris427 4h Never seen that before: Facing a RHB, Diaz's FB shears a bat so hard that the barrel wound up in the fourth row of the third-base seats. Josh Norris ?@jnorris427 3h Diaz took care of the Dash on nine pitches that inning. All FBs between 91-93. Josh Norris ?@jnorris427 3h Diaz is through five innings on 50 pitches. Decent efficiency. #RedSox Josh Norris ?@jnorris427 3h Well hello there, Simon Mercedes. Sitting 95-97 with a very nice mid-80s slidepiece. Worth the drive. #RedSox Josh Norris ?@jnorris427 2h Mercedes was 92-94 that inning but was showcasing filthy cut at times. #RedSox Josh Norris ?@jnorris427 2h Mercedes buries a breaking ball to Hawkins to end it. He's a dude. #RedSox LOL, zero tweets about Courtney Hawkins and Tim Anderson and Jacob May who he also went to see. ADD: Re: the MFY, their system as a whole (hole) does suck. On the other hand, from limited views, Gary Sanchez is every bit as impressive at this point as Swihart, the Thunder third baseman is one hell of a good defender and if their closer was always as good as the night I saw him, he'd be closing in the majors. What stood out though was location for his FB and nasty slider, not sure if he's always that much on the low black. ADD2: Here's the box for the game he attended. www.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?gid=2014_04_21_salafa_wswafa_1&t=g_box&sid=milb

I'd bet money on Mercedes.

The nice thing was the confidence that there were a lot of depth guys you've never heard of, now we have but the point was clear. Let's face it, some of these guys are undervalued because they are so deep in the Sox system rankings. The number 15/16 guy in one system is less sexy than a top 5 from another even if they are comparable players. #HumanNature

Nice find on the tweets.....I agree that Mercedes is the guy in the Friday writeup. He's been getting some love from the scouts since last year. Sickels had him at #13 in our system for his offseason rankings.

The first guy they said 'you haven't heard of but is going to blow up' was a position player they said they would see Friday.
My guess is Rijo.

Or Margot. Norris had a trip to Greenville planned earlier but according to tweets had some sort of health issue (appendicitis I think, but not sure). At one point before that he had mentioned wanting to see Margot.

Nah, they mentioned that the video scouting report would go up on Friday and said, "he rocked my world" in the past tense ... so someone they've already seen. I'd bet money on Mercedes. Aaaand, I win my money! Subscriber only, so I can't actually see the article ... non-copyright-infringing snippets would be welcome, of course. Actually, I just wasn't logged in ... it's not subscriber only. A short informative video, giving Mercedes a 70 fastball, 65 curve, and a 55 change, a "ceiling of a #3 starter or a 2, with a floor of a back end reliever or closer." I can see why his world was rocked since he seemingly wasn't expecting much of anything and suddenly, you've got a 2/3 starter with a 70 fastball ...
