Moore out for the season for the Rays.
We may have had some injury trouble but at least none of our guys need TJ like some of these other teams yet. *knock on wood.

Alex Speier casting some doubt that the Red Sox offense has just been "unlucky" with all the caveats about small sample, early, etc. www.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/alex-speier/2014/04/15/what-happened-championship-lineup-taking-stockExcerpt: Still, it would be a mistake to shrug and say the Sox have experienced only bad luck to date. After all, while BABIP can be influenced by chance, it can also be influenced significantly by a failure to hit a ball hard. Just because a three-hopper to a second baseman is put in play, it doesn't mean that it stands the same likelihood of being a hit as a screamer into the right-field corner.
And clearly, the Sox are doing little to impact the ball when there are opportunities with runners in scoring position -- a notion highlighted by the fact that the team has had extra-base hits in just 4.4 percent of plate appearances with runners in scoring position, last in the American League. Also the walk rate thus far, it is a suck.

I was curious as to who was innocent and guilty of failing to hit with men on / RSIP.
Difference between wRC+ with bases empty and men on:
270 Bogaerts 120 Pedroia 114 Napoli 83 Pierzynski 68 Gomes 18 Nava 12 Bradley -114 Ortiz -317 Sizemore
Difference between wRC+ with bases empty and RISP:
283 Bogaerts 174 Pierzynski 148 Pedroia 105 Napoli 76 Gomes -18 Nava -52 Bradley -81 Ortiz -265 Sizemore
Between them, Bogaerts, Pierzynski, Pedroia, Napoli, and Gomes have hit .364 / .427 / .466 in 131 PA with the bases empty, and .118 / .151 / .176 in 56 PA with RISP.
Edit: the four guys other than Pedroia have hit a combined .304 / .379 / .400, but it's .393 / .474 / .500 with the bases empty and .122 / .163 / .195 with RISP.

I'm not worried about the RISP stuff at all-- it's just small sample size shenanigans. The rapid decline in walk rate is alarming, though. Nava, Pedroia, and Ortiz are the main culprits, as well as swapping out Drew and Saltalamacchia for Middlebrooks/Herrera/Roberts and Pierzynski.

no excuses as timely hitting is missing for sure but...
There can be no doubt the early season typically cold damp weather has lessened carry.
Many times this weekend I thought a ball was out that didn't end up reaching the track.
there was only one hr that I was surprised it reached the seats and that was Beltran's 319 ft 'shot'.
ugh flashbacks...going fetal..

Distribution of hard-hit balls is just as much luck as BABIP, or close enough not to matter much. The declining walk rate is a concern, for sure. But I really don't know how seriously we can take that at this point. Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz didn't suddenly become different hitters. AJ is a genuine issue, but it's not like we didn't all know that going in ... you get what you get from him. The one person I'm a little less sanguine about is Daniel Nava. We all assumed that what we saw last year is what we'll get from Nava going forward, but we still don't have a long history of major league success will go on. The Sox have had some health issues, the downgrade from Ellsbury to JBJ is substantial (at least in the short term), and they've had some bad luck. I'm not sure there's much else we can really be confident of at this point.

I hope the boys don't start pressing. Couple of nice sequences and we're back on the saddle. A lot of good hitters...just stay within themselves and the rest will come.

With all the math that gets thrown around here, I'll add 2 or 3 w's in this series = a lower blood pressure for Red Sox Nation.
Glad to see No DL for Koji and Dustin.

Luckily these sub freezing games are usually only decided by 1 run so the homer and fluke double shouldn't matter at all.

Very uncharacteristic of Xander there.

That was ball 3 and ball 4 Xander. And the go ahead runs just a single away. More RISPy business.

I'm finding myself rooting for walks when JBJ and Xander come up.

Very uncharacteristic of Xander there. At least it shows he was paying attention tonight, this guy has been peppering the zone with fastballs when he has been behind in the count and Xander tried guessing and jumping on one, just so happened Johnson missed his location by a foot and Xander hacked anyway. Think he was still thinking about it when he got put away by the next pitch in the same location. Not terribly disappointed with the aggressiveness in that situation, but I am curious to see how Xander handles himself in his next at bat.

I try not to complain about this too much, but good lord, the officiating has been bad tonight.
