PawSox 6:15
Mookie on base streak continues. 1-4, a single with a K but has hit the ball hard three times.
Couch finally gave up some runs. 4 runs over 5 innings.
Interesting that 6 of the hitters in today's Portland lineup are hitting over .300.

Brian Johnson is having an interesting start. Perfect way to state that. Pena also off to an interesting start including 6 punch outs through 3 IP. Cecchini with his first HR Johnson relieved after 6 perfect innings. 5 Ks.

According to Antonelis, batters are having trouble picking up Pena's fastball. He gave up a hit but has 9 strikouts through 4 innings with 18 swing and misses.
ADD: He's throwing mid 90's and the opposing batters are chasing a lot of high heat with awkward swings.
Mookie extended his streak. He's 1 for 3.
Swihart with his first AA HR, it was hammered. He's batting .342

If Swihart refine his plate discipline he should be a stud.

Pena taken out after 4.2 (pitch count, 92). 11 K's including 22 swing and misses. According to Antonelis, 'a lot of them against righties', he's a lefty. His change was also generating swing and misses.

I've arranged a trip to Portland during the Trenton homestand. Willing to pay a premium for great tickets if any of you guys want to sell yours ( if someone here has seasons tickets ). Might be there the first Reading game as well. Let me know if available.
UPDATE: I just went ahead and booked some good tickets I was able to get for the Saturday and Sunday games.

Celestino doing well. He struck out the side to end the 2nd game. 16 K's total in a seven inning game.

It's possible that Johnson has trouble from the stretch. Opposing batters are hitting .152/.204/.261 with nobody on and .375/.417/.500 with men on in the early going. In 2013 his splits were .178/.262/.243 with the bases empty, .218/.317/.347 with men on. 21 of the 31 runs he allowed in 2014 came in 8 of his 80 (non-GCL) innings. If my math is correct, here is his 2013 breakdown by inning:
62 innings with 0 runs allowed 10 innings with 1 run 5 innings with 2 runs 2 innings with 3 runs 1 inning with 5 runs
I'm pretty sure I'm miscounting a few partial innings, but that seems like an abnormal distribution.
EDIT: If he does actually have trouble from the stretch, and it's correctable, then we may be looking at a pretty good pitcher here. The flip side of that, though, is that if he does and it isn't correctable then it severely limits his chances of making it as a reliever.

I must be missing something because that look like an extremely normal distribution to me, given that sample size.

Yeah, digging deeper using Keith Woolner's model, it isn't as far off as I expected. Apparently when allowing 3.5 runs per game you'd expect a shout inning 76% of the time, and Johnson's was only 77.5%, certainly within the expected threshold. I should have double-checked that first. The numbers from the stretch still stick out though.

It looked almost standard normal to me upon a quick glance.

It should be noted that Travis Shaw after an incredibly bad start has picked it up recently. He was 4 for 4 with a HR tonight.

Comment.
With all due respect for Johnson's perfecto and Owens no-no, Pena's performance today was clearly the most dominant pitching performance of the year at any level. To put his 11K's and 1BB into perspective, that's 21.2 Ks per 9. Clemen's territory. 22 swing and misses over 4.2 is equally as impressive.

Sixteen Ks by Portland pitching in a seven inning game. Wow! Celestino with three ponchados in seventh inning to finish the game.

That team is just incredible. 6 regulars batting over .300, most with solid peripherals. Even the org guys like Hissey, Wilkerson and Gibson are turning it on. If Ramos and Shaw also turn it on, they going pretty much unstoppable. Check out the stats of the highest ranked guys, Swihart, Betts, Morrero & Coyle

6 regulars over .300 plus Rivero at .294 and Shaw has a very respectable .354 OBP. Shaw could a AAA regular providing emergency depth. Even if he cant hit at MLB level, at least he could be a difficult out.
