How long until Carlos Asuaje is considered more than a utility guy? I'll admit i'm biased, loved the guy since he was drafted. Makes great contact, very good speed, I think he's a quick riser. Does anyone else share my high opinion of him or am I overrating him?

I'll have to wait until he is at a more appropriate level before getting excited.

When he has 100 PAs in Portland, then I'll re-assess.

At what point do we think he'll be promoted to Salem? There's no one really blocking him (the starting infielders at Salem are Gragnani, Dent, and Martinez; given Asuaje's defensive versatility, he should be able to get plenty of at-bats there), and he's just destroying the league (.352/.477/.606 with more walks (14) and extra-base hits (13, though no home runs) than strikeouts (11)). But it's also Asuaje's first full year in the system and his first taste of full-season ball.
I briefly looked at some comparable Red Sox draftees (college players who started their first full year in Greenville). The best comp is Bryce Bretz, who similarly destroyed the Sally League (.359/.414/.647) and got promoted to Salem on May 20th after 40 games and 186 plate appearances. So Asuaje will probably get at least a few more weeks.

The Brentz comp looks pretty good to me, although of course he had a pedigree. Still, I'd like to see Asueje up there as soon as possible. At that point we can actually start to evaluate him as a potential prospect.

He's age advanced for Greenville (see the Wiki for more details), so Salem starts to look like the place where it happens. If he continues to show good patience and contact skills there, he's someone to talk about.

Interesting stuff on BP. May require a sub. Admittedly from a month ago (I'm about that far behind on my RSS reading), but this is from an article written by an agent, who happens to be Asuaje's agent: www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=23634He talks a bit about how he came to be Carlos's agent, which gives us some insight into the draft process for him: Interesting stuff. I haven't seen it reported everywhere, but we've heard that Asuaje did get a little bit more than $100k, fwiw.

Thanks for the link. It is behind the pay wall, but well worth reading. Just two more quotes so we don't suck in the entire article: He restates this, and his reasoning, here: Hadn't seen this guy's byline before, or hadn't noticed it. I'm going to have to pay more attention. The insights about the draft are good ones.

After his hot April start, he has of course cooled in May (272) and June (292), but his doubles turned into home runs (8). Seems like they are playing him in multiple positions. Let's see what he does the reset of the way.

Asuaje hit an otherworldly .365/.489/.608 (204 wRC+) in April, but his May (.272/.400/.489, 149 wRC+) and June (.292/.343/.569, 149 wRC+) lines have still been pretty great.
I'm still surprised he hasn't been promoted yet. He might have real MLB potential, while guys like Gragnani and Miller and Dent shouldn't be blocking him much. Maybe they're waiting for a chain promotion of Marrero to Pawtucket, Gragnani to Portland, and Asuaje to Salem.

I was impressed by his extra base hit totals for the year. He seems to generate some pop. But still need to see how he progresses, especially at the next level. I have never seen him, but those who have were impressed by how the ball leaves the bat.

The big news from the agent's story is that he's an off-the-charts makeup guy. The Sox love that and value that, and have had great success emphasizing it.

Has there ever been a time where we had more talent at a position where we had a major leaguer locked up for 7 years? Guys whose best position is or could be 2b?

Like to see this kid in person. He has been picking it up the last ten games, and he was good going into this little streak. Doesn't strike out that much and seems to make consistent contact ( with pop in his bat).

Do we have a late bloomer? Curious as to thoughts. His numbers are really really good.

He's put up good numbers in his MiL career. Although scouting report states he lacks power, he's hit 15 HRs between Salem and Greenville. Versatile. Good guy to keep an eye on.

I don't think anyone can top what Mookie did this yr especially as a 21 yr old.
in 399 minor league ab's, he's got 138 hits, 30 2B's, 5 3B's, 11 HR's, 33 SB's, 61 BB, 50 K's
thats a 346/431/529/960 (in double A and Triple A)
My nomination for the 2nd best hitter in the Sox minors this yr is Carlos Asuaje
in 460 ab's (Greenville and Salem) Carlos has 146 hits, 37 2B's, 12 3B's, 15 HR's, 7 SB's, 53 BB's, 82 K's
thats a 317/396/548/944
I know there are others who put up strong offensive seasons, but Carlos is my pick (granted I didn't do a ton of research here) so who do you think deserves to be mentioned here

Asuaje certainly had a good year. Biggest issue is that he's been old for his level at each stop until now. Even now, he's certainly not age-advanced. Also, we have limited reads on his defense, but in my mind there's a question about whether he'll have the defensive value to be an impact second baseman. My projections are for him to be a poor man's Holt, with lesser defense, and Holt's projected O numbers (which aren't as good as his numbers this year).

Can't argue with the numbers from this guy though. Especially with how much he is driving the ball. Tons of guys hit for average and OBP in the lower levels but how many of them have 37 doubles, 12 triples and 15 HR? Combine that with the other excellent numbers he has put up and one wonders why he hasn't gotten more street cred.

"What do you do in the down time? Video games, things like that?
I’m a big reader, so I’ve read quite a few books this year. I’m actually starting up school soon, taking classes in Business Administration. For down time, we go to the lake on off days, or go to the mall and watch a movie. Every guy on the team has a NetFlix account, because a lot of places we go don’t have too much to do."
The interview definitely oozes 'plus' makeup.

This kid might be better than Holt. He certainly seems to have more power and appears to be a better hitter for average. And you are right, he has the makeup of someone who can make it to the majors, maybe even excel there.

He talks about expecting to be drafted higher as if he were misled by hype, but that really wasn't unrealistic. BA had him ranked #208, which is to middle of the 7th round (12th pick, specifically).
What happened, it would seem, was the first year of the new slotting system, and the strategies teams employed. Teams spent rounds 7 through 10 drafting at least one (and sometimes more than one) guy they could sign below slot, so that meant that some of the guys who were 7 to 10 round talent were squeezed out. Luckily for the Sox, Asuaje was one, and they grabbed him 7 picks into the 11th round. There were others like him: the Indians took #179 ranked Adam Plutko, a CF from UCLA, with the 5th pick in the round, and the Brewers took #181 Andy Hills with the #16 pick.
I generally regard the top 200 guys in a draft ranking to be automatic prospects (indeed, for years that was as far as BA's ranking went), so it's important to remember that he's on the borderline of being a guy with a pedigree, and hence not at all a guy who came from nowhere.
