Sounds good to me. I think he would be a great talent evaluator. As far a manager goes he was always well liked and respected (except by A-Roid) but I think its a little too soon for him to manage a big club. I just hope we keep him in the sox family.

No idea how they plan to use him, but Tek would be very helpful for our minor league catchers throughout the season. Not sure his beautiful wife would be OK with this, but having him head to a Salem or Greenville or Lowell for a week at a time and working diligently with the catchers a couple times a year could be a big bonus. He could help them immeasurably with the mental part of the job as well.

IMO, "Special Assistant to the GM" = glorified internship to figure out what he wants to do within the organization, still allowing him to go spend time with his kids if he wants. Actually kind of a good idea before putting him on any particular track.

I'm inclined to agree with you, though the other guys who have a similar role - Evans, Yaz, Tommy Harper, etc, have the title of "Player Development Consultant," which means it is possible that they have something more specific planned for Varitek.

Gammons also mentioned Pedro would take a formal role with the team. I have to think his stopping by the DR complex on occasion might be attractive to recruit the 16 year old pitchers. With the international cap, I bet a lot are getting similar offers, and the ability to sell a kid on being tutored by Pedro might make a difference.

Pedro would presumably be a great recruiting tool. Here comes the endless speculation of Varitek being manager next season even though it simply won't happen.

glorified internship to figure" ------------------------------------- What they don't want is a Fisk situation where Pudge has spent a generation telling people the RS didn't offer him anything. He still seems pissed.

But those guys basically just come to spring training and work with the minor leaguers. I'm saying this is for a year or two while Varitek decides what he specifically wants to do.

Perhaps the potential Varitek hiring provides some protection in the likely event that Tuck decides to leave the Red Sox and there will likely be an opening for a catching instructor/bullpen coach in 2013.

I'm not into following the personal lives of players but I can see why he likes the woman he was with the last time I saw who ever it was. She had a face that looked like a catchers mitt.

Basically the job Robin Ventura did before he got the manager's job in Chicago.

I think that's what Steve was making reference to.

She does not resemble any catchers mit I have ever seen. I think she is a knock-out personally.

Do we have anything more to say on this one that's on-topic?

Article at WEEI today.
WEEI.com reported Wednesday that Jason Varitek was "close" to agreement on a role within the Sox organization. Cherington was asked what that role might be for the former Sox captain. "There's no one more respected in our clubhouse, really still, than 'Tek. ... My hope is that he can be a set of eyes and ears for me and we can expose him to a lot of different things, let him see what he enjoys the most, what he doesn't and we will go from there," Cherington said, who noted that the job would be an off-the-field one. "We're going to allow him to kind of get his feet wet in different areas and get to know different areas of the organization and just be someone I can call and bounce some stuff off of."
Sounds good to me. Glad they are going to use Tek in a position like that. There are few things he hasn't experienced in the game of baseball.

So in other words, it's going to be a glorified internship to figure out what he wants to do within the organization. Sounds good.

Varitek was in Fort Myers yesterday for the Instructional game and was huddled with Cherington and Hazen most of the game.
I was "excited" to see Bill James present. I guess there are direct flights from Kansas City. Kidding aside, I'm glad James will have more input into decisions. I bet when it came too signing Carl Crawford that James attempted to throw his considerable weight around and was rejected by someone in a gorilla costume.
