Varitek was in Fort Myers yesterday for the Instructional game and was huddled with Cherington and Hazen most of the game. I was "excited" to see Bill James present. I guess there are direct flights from Kansas City. Kidding aside, I'm glad James will have more input into decisions. I bet when it came too signing Carl Crawford that James attempted to throw his considerable weight around and was rejected by someone in a gorilla costume. My understanding of James' role before was basically to do a study or two per year that would be property of the Sox. He wasn't involved with making specific decisions I don't think.

It makes sense as Chris said to give Varitek a glorified internship. You have to see where his interest and skills draw him in a front office or instructional role.
I think it is interesting that Cherington is putting what appears to the outside to be an increased emphasis on avoiding group think. Bringing in people who are not in the bowels of Fenway all the time. Adding 'Tek, Bane, and an increased role for James is a good start to the Off-season.
