|
Post by amfox1 on May 25, 2014 16:46:31 GMT -5
Last year, we began this thread on August 5. Given that the Red Sox may very well be in the midst of this, we'll start it today, on Memorial Day weekend.

Celtics take note, this is how tanking is done.

Celtics take note, this is how tanking is done. For the record, I don't believe the Celtics tanked. They played hard but didn't have the arsenal. They bottomed out. Everything is up from here. That part is exciting! The sooner the Sox realize that they too are bottoming, the sooner they will 'rebound'.

This is going to be a funny thread to look back on when the Sox make the playoffs...

I don't think they are bad enough to battle with the Astros and company. A middle of the road finish is more likely if the roster stays as currently constituted. I don't think they are contenders but they are not one of the worst teams in baseball either.

I'm fully on board with the "get top 7 pick, then win world series every other year plan." Here's hoping it isn't a position player turned pitcher in the high spot we will have.

If we fall to a position where the likelihood of making the playoff is very remote, we will then be in a position to trade players for prospects and totally revamp the team this coming winter.
Given the talent pool we have now, upcoming IFA expectations and a potentially huge pack of prospects from trades, we would then be in a great position to trade back prospects for 2015 players this coming winter. We're blessed with few commitments going forward.
We are also blessed with plausible replacements for most of what we would trade. Imagine what players like Lackey, Lester, and Peavy would bring in a trade if you factor in our ability to eat dollars. Eating dollars is essentially buying prospects and we're in a position to totally do that as well. We could literally turn a loosing season into a potential dynasty.
Of the top 5 pretty much consensus best farms, Red Sox, Astros, Cubs, Pirates and Twins (not in that order), who's the 500 pound canary ?

I would be curious to hear who the plausible replacement would be for Lester. I know we all love our prospects however I have a hard time buying that we have a plausible replacement for Lester in the next 1-2 years internally. Lackey would be valuable however I can't imagine anything Jake Peavy would get us even if we ate all of his money.

If you are talking about 2015 and beyond for Lester, Samardjia, Sale, Price, Scherzer, Garza, Shields and Lester himself should be available this winter. There will also be other teams looking to trade pitchers for the right price, there always is. If you are talking 2014 and we've tanked, any of the five at Pawtucket.
There have been 35 TJ surgeries. Peavy is only 32, hasn't lost velocity only location and he's healthy. Eat enough contract and he'd bring a return. Even Doubront, look back in history, cost controlled lefties do bring a return even if just as bullpen pieces. Lackey's minimum wage 2015 probably makes him the pitcher who will return the most.
Players like AJP, Victorino and Napoli also have decent return value, particularly if we eat some contract to a small market team in the playoff hunt. Our relievers, pretty much up and down the pack all have value. They obviously aren't going to trade everybody that's tradeable but there's a ton of potential there for a big market team.

The nice thing for the Astros and Cubs is that the Diamondbacks probably still see themselves as contenders, and Towers and Co will probably load up for a run at 72 job-saving wins.

Looking at our financial flexibility, is amazing. We currently have about $100m available for 2015 and 2016 is outrageous. In 2016 we only have Pedroia. Buccholz has 2 years of club options and Ortiz' extensions are all club options as well.
We are also in a position to seriously upgrade quality, not just quantity in our farm. Trade a B+ prospect and a major league player for an A prospect, for example.
ADD: Besides the usual round of recent trade people, Stanton, Heyward, Cargo & Tulo,Kemp & Ethier, this is the off season for the start of the Cutch trade endless rumors.

I just hope we don't fall somewhere in that awful middle ground, either win 100 or lose 100 (or, you know, make the playoffs or get a top 10 pick; just don't miss the playoffs and end up with like a #20 pick.

Concurrent with the above, an important consideration. Playoff odds. Right now, according to Fangraphs, we have a 23.3 % chance of making the Playoffs with a slightly greater chance of winning the division than getting a wildcard. www.fangraphs.com/coolstandings.aspx

I know we probably did not have a shot to sign either, but seeing Fulmer and Bregman looking like top-10 picks still stings a bit. It makes the 2015 draft a little more frustrating to follow.

Yep. We do this every year. Gotcha.....I thought perhaps the thread was specifically an attempt to appreciate the Sox recent struggles. I forgot that we did this last year even when we won the pennant.
