Can't believe we're having a worse season than the Cubs, Twins, Chisox, Phillies and Mets.

Can't believe we're having a worse season than the Cubs, Twins, Chisox, Phillies and Mets. Don't those thing happen when you trade your best 2 starters minus another ... oh yea and your best lefty reliever. Kind of makes your odds of going up in the season standings come into perspective.

Except we stunk on July 31st. And, didn't trade the starters for prospects.

But we did trade a reliever for what looks like an outstanding prospect.
Escobar and Kelly could turn out to be good prospects. Kelly, in particular, can't seem to catch a break. I'm impressed with his velocity and control. Perhaps, at 26, he's no longer a prospect, but he's a young starter who was 10 - 6 last year with an era under 3.

Joe Kelly is no longer a prospect because he has been pitching in the major leagues since 2012 and has pitched quite well.

Don't those thing happen when you trade your best 2 starters minus another ... oh yea and your best lefty reliever. Kind of makes your odds of going up in the season standings come into perspective. Let's look back on this thread from the time we traded those players. As we now hit the dog days of August, here is where we stand: If the season ended right now, CWS would have the first unprotected pick at #12: 1. TEX ---- 2. HOU (Aiken supplemental pick, locked in at #2)3. HOU -0.5 4. COL -1.0 5. CHC -2.5 6. PHI - 4.5 7. ARI -4.5 8. SDO -5.0 9. BOS -5.010. MIN -5.5 11. NYM -9.0 12. CWS -9.5 BOS is 4.5 games out of an unprotected pick and 5.5 games out of the #1 pick. (tiebreaker order of the above teams is HOU, CWS, CHC, MIN, PHI, COL, NYM, SDO, ARI, TEX, BOS)Boy we really were in striking distance and ownership decided to take the wind out of our sails.

Can't believe we're having a worse season than the Cubs, Twins, Chisox, Phillies and Mets. Well, we actually haven't been worse than the Cubs and the Phillies. Our schedule has been 4.1 and 3.6 games tougher, respectively. We're benefiting from the average 3.6 win difference between the AL and NL so far, which projects to be 4.4 by season's end. Colorado's schedule has been 4.7 games easier than the Rangers, as the teams play in the weakest and strongest divisions in MLB respectively. They'd be easily in lead for the #1 pick if teams were playing a perfectly balanced schedule, instead of being a game back.

Just about every team around the Sox won last night, so that loss was huge. 1 game out of a top 5 pick. Workman on the hill, let's keep the ball rolling tonight.

Here's those standings, plus projected final finish based on remaining strength of schedule, with half of "karma"* taken as predictive.
*difference between W/L and expected W/L based on hitting and pitching stats, which is to say BP's second-order win percentage, properly adjusted for SoS.
1. TEX 2. HOU (Aiken supplemental pick, locked in at #2) 3. COL -2.5 -> 4.2 4. ARI -5.0 -> 6.3 5. HOU -7.5 -> 8.7 7. BOS -8.0 -> 9.6 6. MIN -8.0 -> 9.9 8. CWS -10.0 -> 11.4 10. PHI -11.0 -> 12.8 9. CHC -10.5 -> 12.9 11. NYM -12.5 -> 15.1 12. CIN -13.0 13. SDO -13.5 14. TBR -13.5 15. MIA -14.5

Here's a breakdown of games that will help the Red Sox no matter what in terms of draft position:
Minnesota Twins: vs. Chicago White Sox (3), vs. Arizona Diamondbacks (3)
Houston Astros: vs. Texas Rangers (3)
Arizona Diamondbacks: vs. Colorado Rockies (4), vs. Minnesota Twins (3)

"let's keep the ball rolling tonight." ------------- Love to squeak in at #5 pick however: Farrell wants 70w, can't finish tied with Bobby. So he needs nine W's. It's going to be close, no tanking.

Don't tie Bobby V!! Win 69 or less. Other than watching the kids this month, it's like watching my mother-in-law drive my new Lexus over a cliff.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Losing_EdgeThe South Park Cows are South Park's Little League baseball team, although nobody on the team enjoys the sport at all. .. They decide to try losing their next game on purpose, and thereby get out of the running for the state championship, but the teams they oppose all have exactly the same idea - they hate baseball as much as the South Park kids do, and while trying desperately to lose, the South Park Cows manage again and again to beat their opponents, whose efforts at throwing games are more successful.

I cant believe you all are actually rooting for losses. We're going to get a protected pick anyway, the number of the pick is not nearly as big of a deal as how our players play, since most of them will be back next year. You guys are way too obsessed with draft picks

Like I've said before though, these aren't the September 2012 Red Sox. They are almost entirely made up of young players who the team needs to develop to continue to be successful in the future. Rooting for this team to lose is basically rooting against current player development in favor of future player development. If this core isn't good enough then it's a serious problem that the difference between the fifth and eighth pick next season won't fix.

Losses like tonight's suggest otherwise. The young players did their part and Koji blew the lead. How does that hurt future player development?

You guys are way too obsessed with draft picks You are right, but those that root for moving up a few spots it the draft can't be talked to. My guess is most were picked last on the playground and were better at baseball with pencils and computers than bats and gloves.
