Freaking bizarre 12 months. From the top of the mountain to almost he bottom of the valley.
I still think we can get in the top 5.

The Red Sox aren't going to get a top 5 pick. Between the Astros pick from last year, the total ineptitude of the Rangers, Rockies, and D-Backs, the only chance they'd have is if the Twins can actually string together some wins, but they are doing everything in their power to secure the 5th spot. They have totally tanked. I just hope the Sox don't blow the 6 and 7 spots by getting hot enough to pass the Cubs and Astros. I figure the Sox aren't picking any lower than 8th.

I find the prospect homer in myself cheering for a higher draft pick but I can't see us getting a much higher pick than where we are now. Every team that is ahead of us and directly behind us has been just as bad and worse than we have been, so it's not very probable that any of them go on some hot winning streak.
Honestly if the Sox got a little hot here with a lot of the young guys showing promise for next year, and still ended up with even the 11th pick....I'd be very happy.

The magic number looks to be 8, but I just woke up. I find it just as important to get a protected pick as it is for our rookies to get on the field and off the field experience. I want a worse record than Theo's Cubs get. Since our GM and the Cubs GM think a like.

You jumped the gun by a few minutes, Minnesota just won. Boston is one game (plus the tiebreaker) out of the 5th pick.

...and the translation of that comment is...? That we are a MIN win and an inevitable loss away from our highest pick since 1966. Seems kind of self explanatory.

Minnesota and Arizona play 3 more games before the end of the season, which is the absolute ideal scenario for us. The two teams directly ahead of us guaranteed 3 wins. Arizona also has 3 more with Colorado, so they could win a handful of games (unlikely to pass them). The Astos play Texas 3 more times as well and then finish with the Mets (root for Houston). The Cubs have the toughest remaining schedule (LAD, StL, Mil), which is way them blowing a 3 run 7th inning lead to LA last night hurt.
Things look pretty good as of right now.
We need the Orioles to sweep us and then we'll have a pretty good idea of where are pick will fall. As of now it's very likely to be beween 5 and 8.

The Cubs are 12-9 against the Brewers this year. Swept the Brewers the last series.

I still think the Orioles will sweep us again. We know how much Dan Duquette & Buck Showalter hated us and wanted to punching us. No sympathy on their part.
Ben didn't do good job with #7 pick (Trey Ball) unlike the Dodgers hit the jackpot with Clayton Kershaw (#7 pick from yr 2006).
I'm still worried by another botch high draft pick by Ben. I look forwarding with possible firing coaches/FO by 3 co-owners for their awful season.

You could do that all day when scrutinizing the MLB draft

Hopefully we don't pick 7th again...maybe we will have better luck with the 5th pick or the 8th pick. But lets hope we don't pick 7th because obviously BC can't pick guys 7th. And whoever is picked will be able to show us if they are a bust or not after a couple months (especially if they are a high schooler)

Ball just completed his first full season of pro baseball and showed signs of improvement all the way through. Calling him a bust after 1 year is just plain ridiculous.

Houston really blew an opportunity last night. Gave up the game tying single with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th. Lost in extras. Would have opened up a 2 game cushion between our 6th pick and the 7th-8th.

Doubt we'd catch them, but Colorado and Arizona are currently tied for the second worst record, 4 games ahead of (or behind?) the Red Sox.

We have too many people way too focused on results and ignoring the process. In my mind ball had a whale of a season. Between April and September he improved more than any other prospect not named betts. I can not even begin to imagine how much time the pitching coaches spent instructing him and cleaning up his delivery. Bottom line though is that he is an unimaginably better pitcher now than in April. Does he still have command and control issues? Yes. But how many one year full timers don't. I expect ball to continue to get better and better as his command and control improves and he gets more innings under his belt.

LA hit it out of the park with the Kershaw pick at #7. Yet how easily could they have ended up with someone else? Multiple teams ahead of LA ended up with garbage. I just don't see how it is even somewhat of a comp for Ball

I'm holding out hope for #5. Anything higher would be gravy.
As far as Ball/Kershaw, you might not be pleased with the pick, but you can't argue with results. The Dodgers organization has won the World Series 0 times since drafting Kershaw. The Red Sox have won every single World Series since drafting Trey Ball.
So clearly, Ball > Kershaw.

I don 't see how the sox winning the World Series last year means ball is better than Kershaw. With the win in Baltimore tonight I can see the five spot slipping away.

Bailed out by wins by Colorado and Minnesota. A missed opportunity for sure. Breslow did his part, no question about it.
