And five teams passed on Derek Jeter, who was picked six. And in 2013, if we'd lost two more games, we'd have Clint Frazier. Generally, the benefits of Betts, Bogaerts etc. doing well for six games is dramatically less important than the benefits of moving up two slots. FWIW, Frazier had an awful year as well. We all really need to get off of the Frazier thing. Edit: actually, nevermind. Didn't realize how he turned it around in the second half. Why didn't they just throw more money at Alex Meyer when they had the chance?

Italics and other fonts (bolds, strikethroughs, etc) don't work on the Proboards app. It's a real failing.

Carry on.

I want to make sure that they stay ahead of Astros (already owns #2 pick) & Cubs for #6 or higher pick. You must lose the game if Astros/Cubs are losing the game or you can win if both are winning. Plain & simple.

Well, that was a pretty disastrous evening last night. Now we're in the 8th spot as I understand it, given tiebreakers, with Houston, the Cubs, and Minnesota all losing. Plus Arizona beat Colorado, putting the Rockies further out of reach for whatever remote chance we had of "catching" them in the negative sense.

Not quite - we're still at 6th. The wins are the critical number. We're still below the Cubs and Houston in wins, so we control our own destiny. If we lose out, we get 6th, no matter how much the other teams lose.

The pick is in the top 10. I am so excited to see Betts starting to excel and it seems Boston found its top of the order bat just a season after losing a great one in Jacoby Ellsbury. That's great news. Joe Kelly exceeding in 7 of his 9 starts with under 3 runs is encouraging as well. Other posters have commented on this, but I think its important to focus on the good things rather than hoping this team stinks. If the pick is at 6, I believe in Sawdaye and Ben Cherington's vision.

Projected final wins, with true wins (strength of schedule adjusted) in parentheses:
1. Ari 65.2 (61.7) 2. Tex 65.5 (68.4) 3. Col 66.9 (63.0) 4. Min 68.6 (69.9) 5. Bos 71.0 (73.8) 6. ChN 71.2 (69.3) 7. Hou 71.3 (74.3) 8. Phi 73.9 (72.2) 9. ChA 74.7 (75.8) 10. Cin 75.0 (73.2) 11. Mia 77.1 (74.8) 12. SD 77.7 (74.3)
So the half-game edge we currently have on the Cubs and Astros is narrowed a bit by the Astros playing their last 6 on the road, and by the Cubs playing the Cards at home and the Brewers on the road. Still, if the loss-column tie gets broken, we're the favorite among the three.
If we lose out on the tie-breaker and end up with the 8th pick, it'll be hard to complain given that we've been the 8th worst team in MLB when adjusting for schedule, not the 5th.

Well, the Sox have now officially clinched a protected first-round pick, with Miami's victory today.
Now we'll see how far up the ladder we end up.

Annoys me even more that teams can't trade pick with their cash allotments. Think of what kind of deals you could broker for proven MLB talent with a top five pick and the dough to shore up your overalll pool.

Big win by the Cubs tonight. I think we need Chicago to win one more game and Houston to win two more games this year to really secure the 6th pick. I think 70 wins the most logical total for the Red Sox, hoping for 5 more losses, but don't know if that happens.
Colorado is coming on strong and there is an outside shot the Twins could pass us (if we lose 4 of 5).
Also, I believe we've locked up a protected pick. The most wins we can finish with is 73. Currently Cincinnati has the 10th worst record alone with 73 wins. The best we can do is tie them, so the pick is now protected.

Yeah, but those picks would be traded about as much as the players drafted with them currently are. Hardly ever.

what the hell? Texas on a 10-1 streak to blow the #1 pick. I know that is crazy. I'd be FURIOUS if I were a Rangers fan. Far and away the worst team all year and just when it looks lke the #1 pick is locked up, go on an obscene run to blow a top 2-3 pick.

Can the Sox lose the competitive balance pick they received from Oakland in the Lester deal for signing a free agent?

Twins squeeze one out over the Snakes. They are now at .430 vs BOS at .433. They move on to Detroit to face Scherzer and Porcello for starters. Hughes pitched today, so their best SP not available. Upward (or downward) climb for our BoSox to gain the #5 spot.
