If the season ended right now, TEX would have the top pick in the draft:
1. TEX ---- (five game losing streak) 2. HOU -0.5 3. ARI -0.5 4. COL -1.0 5. CHC -1.5 6. SDO -2.0 7. PHI -3.0 (four game winning streak) 8. TBR -3.0 9. BOS -3.0 10. NYM -4.0 11. MIN -4.5 12. CWS -5.5 13. MIA -6.5 14. CLE -7.5
(tiebreaker order of the above teams is HOU, MIA, CWS, CHC, MIN, PHI, COL, NYM, SDO, ARI, TBR, TEX, CLE, BOS)

I have a tough time seeing this team staying in the protected pick range, even if they go into full fire sale mode. Bogaerts is going to bounce out of this slump eventually, while guys like Bradley and Nava already have, and they're going to move some of their worst veteran offenders (Sizemore and Pierzynski are already gone; Peavy and Drew are likely next). If they trade guys like Lester and Uehara, that'll certainly make them much worse, but their replacements will be promising young players (say, Webster and Hinojosa) rather than the replacement-level scrubs that most teams would replace them with. I'm still pretty confident that they'd play better than teams like the Mets and Twins and thus fall back in the pack somewhat.

And that would be a good outcome. This is not 2012, there are too many important young players on this team to wish them to lose. Learning how to win at this level is important. One key aspect of the 2013 season was that they started out winning from the get-go, which kept the media jackels at bay and allowed some breathing room. High draft picks are fun and important, but, assuming we miss the playoffs, tankapalooza is not the best outcome for the rest of the season.

It's absolutely imperative that they figure out what they have for next year. They need to decide now where Xander is playing so they have a plan at 3rd. And if Holt can play the rest of the year at this level, we need to pencil him in somewhere next year. Ditto with the pitchers.

Pencil him in as a super-utility/Ben Zobrist role. You do realize that the "Ben Zobrist role" is starting 64% of games at 2B, right?

I think he was commenting on the fact that everyone wants to use that term for Betts and Holt and anyone else that plays more than 1 position more than once.

Out of all the teams in the lower half of the first round as of today, only boston is capable of going on a monster run.
If the kids come alive, then I think we can do it.

The kids are coming alive. It's the veterans who are decomposing.

I'm more than fine letting the Yankees and Rays fight over this while the Sox hoist their second consecutive World Series trophy.

Just to make sure ... 10 picks generated this year are protected, right? So if Aiken indeed does not sign the #11 pick is protected?

I thought the comp pick isn't protected though.

Nope. Only the top ten are protected.
edit: all picks are protected for two years.

Nope. Only the top ten are protected. That's ... pretty rough. Bottom 10 was going to be tough for the Sox in any case. Bottom 9 will be all the more difficult to attain.

This actually came up with the Mets a couple years ago but I don't know if they signed a compensation eligible free agent or not.

The Mets ended up avoiding signing a compensation eligible free agent to keep what wound as the #11 pick in 2013 (Dominic Smith).

Has anyone started looking at which free agents will be given qualifying offers?
Just doing a quick scan:
Probably: Hanley Ramirez Chase Headley Pablo Sandoval Nelson Cruz Max Scherzer Jon Lester
Maybe: JJ Hardy Asdrubal Cabrera Jed Lowrie
I don't think the Sox would sign Hanley, Scherzer isn't coming to Boston, and I don't think any of the other guys make much sense for the Red Sox either if they cost a draft pick.

You probably need to add Koji into here as well. I'm sure he's going to get a 2 year deal somewhere and there is zero risk in this given the fact he is showing no signs of slowing down.

I actually think that's the case most years. Personally I just don't think we're going anywhere this year and want the highest pick possible, protected or not. I see the sox building from the farm and adding mainly filler from free agency.

Shields will get a QO and might be a Red Sox target.

I agree on Koji, but I think he accepts.
Missed Shields, he's an obvious one.
