A QO for Cruz? Is that right. I thought since he got one last year, he would be exempt from one this year.

You are not exempt from getting the QO two years in a row, so Cruz will likely get one. This time, however, he'll probably find someone willing to sign him despite the QO.

Only the 2 Boras holdouts look to be in bad shape heading into the last half of the season. How fitting is that? Have to probably settle for a 1y deal anyway and (hopefully) less $$ than they got this year.

We would sign Cruz to a QO even if we were outside the top ten. We just need to keep losing by a run, but I have a feeling we'll end up closer to .500.

If the season ended right now, BOS and TB would be out of the top ten:
1. TEX ---- 2. HOU (Aiken supplemental pick, locked in at #2) 3. COL -1.0 (five game losing streak) 4. HOU -1.5 5. CHC -1.5 (five game losing streak) 6. ARI -3.5 7. PHI -4.0 8. SDO -4.0 9. MIN -5.5 10. MIA -6.5 11. NYM -7.0 12. TBR -7.0 (five game winning streak) 13. BOS -7.0 (four game winning streak) 14. CWS -7.5
(tiebreaker order of the above teams is HOU, MIA, CWS, CHC, MIN, PHI, COL, NYM, SDO, ARI, TBR, TEX, BOS)
BOS is 6.0 games behind the 2nd wild card and 7.5 games out in the divisional race, with 64 games to go.

None of those teams in the Top 10 have any incentive to win. They will sell and get even worse than they are right now. Hard to envision us slipping back unless there is a big fire sale; Lester, Koji, etc. I don't see that happening.

Boston isn't finishing in the top 10 or bottom 10

timdierkes ?@timdierkes 1h Just learned a change was made to protect 1st round picks of the teams with the 10 worst records, regardless of the "top ten" wording.

BOS would have the 13th pick if the season ended last night. BOS is 7.5 games behind BAL and 6.0 games behind SEA with 63 to go, with five teams in between (MFY, TOR, CLE, KC, CHW).

If the season ended right now, COL would have the first pick and BOS would have a protected pick:
1. COL ---- (seven game losing streak) 2. HOU (Aiken supplemental pick, locked in at #2) 3. TEX ---- 4. HOU -2.0 5. CHC -2.0 6. PHI - 3.0 7. SDO -3.5 8. ARI -3.5 9. MIN -5.5 10. NYM -7.0 11. BOS -7.0 12. MIA -7.5 13. CWS -7.5 14. TBR -7.5 (six game winning streak)
(tiebreaker order of the above teams is HOU, MIA, CWS, CHC, MIN, PHI, COL, NYM, SDO, ARI, TBR, TEX, BOS)
BOS is 6.0 games behind the 2nd wild card and 8.5 games out in the divisional race, with 62 games to go.
edit: On July 8, BOS was 10.0 games behind the 2nd wild card and 10.5 games out in the divisional race, with 72 games to go. BOS has eight games to go before the trade deadline.

Has anyone started looking at which free agents will be given qualifying offers? Just doing a quick scan: Probably: Hanley Ramirez Chase HeadleyPablo Sandoval Nelson Cruz Max Scherzer Jon Lester James ShieldsMaybe: JJ Hardy Asdrubal Cabrera Jed Lowrie I don't think the Sox would sign Hanley, Scherzer isn't coming to Boston, and I don't think any of the other guys make much sense for the Red Sox either if they cost a draft pick. Added Shields to list. Removed Headley after trade.

Not sure you should have Houston's comp pick on this as if you do the. The top 11 becomes protected... MLB changed the language to read some thing like 10 worst records are protected to avoid that nonsense the Mets were involved in last year.

Just on a side note the top players in next years class look good, and how about two former sox picks being pegged already as top 10 picks, bregman and Carson Fulmer.
