Slot for pick #134 is $377,000. McAvoy isn't going to sniff half of that. Likely save upwards of 200-250K for Overslots. Or $367,000

This is the Red Sox strategy to a tee. The last 4-5 years you can bank on them signing a well underslot kid in round 4 or 5 and they taking hard to sign guys later in the day, earlier tommorrow.

Saving money for overslots later. Why exactly do teams do that? Why not just take the overslot guys you want to take and then take the nobodies? Because if you don't sign a player in the first 10 rounds you lose the slot money and cannot spend it elsewhere. Signable guys first to guarantee you have the whole pool then splurge later.

I might be off by one or two, but through 124 rounds, the teams have picked 68 pitchers, 21 infielders, 21 outfielders, 10 catchers and 4 1Bs.

I like the McAvoy pick a lot, especially if that stuff plays up in the pen. Save a bunch of money and add a potentially useful arm to the system.

Do the sox draft Fenway Parks? How about Handsome Monica C/1B from St Paul's HS, Covington, La?

For whatever reason, they did not pick any quality outfielders, who are of course lacking in their system.Probaly had good reasons, but what is plan b with regard to this need- trades, international players?

Saving money for overslots later. Why exactly do teams do that? Why not just take the overslot guys you want to take and then take the nobodies? because they ARE taking the guys they want to take first, just not the best player available. They take a guys someone in the front office has a crush on for some reason even if they know he doesnt really deserve to be drafted at that point, and later on take whoever falls, even if its not someone they were necessarily targeting

When I say a nobody I mean he's an unranked, underslot organizational arm. He's not really a major league prospect. My guess is the Sox like him, know he will cost little and save money

You don't draft for need in baseball. These kids are all years out. Also plenty of these kids will wind up switching positions. Look at Mookie. He wasn't drafted as an outfielder, but that's where he'll probably wind up playing for us. Supposedly Chavis could wind up in an outfield corner. Even Travis is talked about as a possible left fielder.

Saving money for overslots later. Why exactly do teams do that? Why not just take the overslot guys you want to take and then take the nobodies? Because if the slot pick for #134 in the 4th round is $377,000, and there is no slot for the 11th round, you can sign the 4th-round overdraft for less, risk an 11th round pick on an overslot, and if the 11th round pick doesn't sign you do not lose the ability to offer the money saved to another overslot. You can also do this a couple or more times and wind up with a nice piece of change to offer someone.

Between Kopech, Cosart and the two or so top international arms Boston is expected to sign looks to be another influx of young arms into the system continuing the depth.

Kevin McAvoy from Bryant College. Who? Here's hoping there's enough $$$ for a nice overslot sign.
