Yep. Didn't say he was great but I haven't seen any lists with that many names so I mentioned it.

Bud Black would be the guy I'd like to see come to Boston but I think he is signed through next year

I would like to get a manager without any ties to the Red Sox of the last few year. That would be John Farrell. I still like Tony Pena. I think he could work out good if he had the right pitching coach. I like Pena as an outside the box candidate. Sandburg also seems ready to make the leap and could be a consideration as an outside the box candidate, unless the Phils make a move to switch things up this offseason. I'd also like Black, dmaine, but the Padres have options on him through 2015. Completely outside the box......Joe Torre? At the very least, BC's comments indicate the manager process is already underway and should be resolved quickly, which is a very good thing. OT: the exalt/smite thing is childish and needs to go

I would gather the first thing Ben will need to do is figure out if they go 1) experienced manager, or 2) a newbie
I doubt Francona would have been so successful, if he hadn't first failed in Philadelphia.

Cherington's remarks lead me to believe the next victim will be either a present employee (Tim Bogar?) or an ex-employee with whom he is comfortable and familiar (DeMarlo Hale?).

Mike Lowell- smart, a leader AND bilingual.
I wouldn't trade any player who has a shot at making the Sox MLB roster for Farrell, either, esp when guys like Bogar, Francona, Dave Martinez, ect are compensation-free.

Guidas, I couldn't agree more with your position on not trading for a manager. Previous media golden boy Farrell has apparently had the same kinds of problems in the club-house and with the perception of leadership as BV (ok not quite as bad). His advantage to us is that he has a pitching background and might help there as well as familiarity with players and process. His addition would be seamless in that sense. But, I don't want to give up any talent...(Zach Stewart?) for any manager.

I understand that Farrell is not in great favor with the fans, and the organization. At this point it doesn't look like he will be renewed.
Why not wait Toronto out, if indeed, Farrell is their man?

Manny Acta was not a great manager in Washington or in Cleveland. Though he did excel getting the most out of several underacheiving starting pitchers last year. That being said really? Lowell is an intriguing idea, but I don't see the front office going in that area. Lucchino would have to be sold majorly.

The massive amounts of Farrell talks are only setting us up for disappointment if he does become manager. Nick Cafardo @nickcafardo Sox GM Ben Cherington will be in NY for final series. Cherington is going to take a mic and publicly fire Bobby Valentine after the final game of the series.

Possible, but do they really want to wait, potentially deep into the offseason, in hopes that comes to fruition? Hopefully both sides can come to an agreement that (most likely) Boston wants Farrell and (most likely) Toronto does not....and then agree to some level of financial compensation that makes both sides happy. -4....classy times

There's no rush to trade for Farrell. He's a free agent anyway at the end of the season. BTW, how come I'm now at minus one karma? What do I need to do to improve my score? I'm concerned.

My list of preferred candidates (in order; I assume Alomar, Jr. will get the CLE job):
1. John Farrell (TOR current manager). Won't happen but I assume he tops the list. Too logical.
2. Mike Maddux (TEX pitching coach). Pulled himself out of the running last time. I think he's a managerial star on the come.
3. Joey Cora (MIA bench coach). He's ready but has no ties to Boston.
4. Arnie Beyeler (PawSox current manager). I would be all aboard hiring the no-name internal candidate for a team rebuilding from within.
5. Tim Bogar (BOS current bench coach). He is highly thought of and had a strained relationship with Bobby V. Works for me.
6. Torey Lovullo (TOR first-base coach, former PawSox manager). Next best thing to hiring Farrell.
7. DeMarlo Hale (BAL third-base coach, former BOS bench coach). I'd be willing to go back to the future.
8. Dave Martinez (TB bench coach). I was higher on him last year, to be honest. I thought he should have replaced Tito.
I will be shocked and disappointed if Valentine is not fired within 48 hours after the season. I sincerely hope that ownership allows Cherington to pick his own manager this time.

It is easy to hate on Acta because he doesn't have that great winning percentage that, all too often, we find ourselves overvaluing in a manager. A team's winning percentage is much like a pitcher's winning percentage: it reflects on the quality of the guys around him and not on him. Acta is a very intelligent manager that understands how to construct a lineup; he understands that bunting is not a good baseball strategy (by the numbers); and he understands that a major league manager needs to have an open-mind (he isn't afraid to defy conventional wisdom). I think Acta would be a great choice.
