Mauricio Dubon is a guy I've been very interested in following since he was drafted-- think this year's Carlos Asuaje. He's got an interesting backstory, one that might explain why he's an intriguing prospect despite being a non-overslot 26th-round draft choice. The early reports out of Lowell look promising: However, he's almost certain still very raw with his pitch recognition and plate discipline, as evidenced by his 12:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio last year in the GCL. It is too much to ask for him to start walking a ton this early in his career, but I'll be keeping an eye on whether he can keep his strikeout rate relatively low. Something else to watch: in the first game of the Lowell season, Dubon started at SS over a $900K, relatively well-regarded guy in Raymel Flores. I'll be curious to see whether that's a rotation and to what extent Dubon also gets time at 3B or 2B.

How about his defense? Is he a pure SS ?

How about his defense? Is he a pure SS ? He played SS again last night (over Flores), so I imagine the organization thinks he at least has a chance to stick there.

Dubon has yet to strike out in his first 24 plate appearances this year. He's posted a .304/.333/.435 triple-slash so far, having started every one of his five games at shortstop.

It appears as though his contact rate is 100% through those 24 plate appearances as well if the stats on this website are up-to-date/accurate.

ChrisMellen like his defense at SS. He looks like a pure SS. Then there is a value.

With Dubon having a good start, I can see an infield logjam in the mid minors....YM, Chavis, Dubon, Devers (once he gets going), Longhi, Rijo (maybe), Kyri Washington, ect......Guys like Coyle & Marrero may get leapfrogged in a year...

I don't really see much of a logjam there. Dubon is the only SS of the bunch (he'd easily displace Tzu-Wei Lin in Portland, once he's ready for a promotion), Longhi is the only 1B of the bunch (and he might still get some playing time in the outfield as well) and Devers is a legitimate year ahead of Chavis. The only potential issue is Moncada/Rijo, but that's a discussion for another thread.

OK...just looking down the road, & I am not a Farm Director or anything, but in a year or 2 our upper minors may not have many "fillers". Imagine having 5 or 6 Joc Peterson/Corey Seager type players in Pawtucket at once.

The Red Sox do have three elite position-player prospects in Moncada, Benintendi and Devers who are at roughly the same level, which is nice. But guys like Chavis and Dubon and Longhi are not close to being in the same tier (and are likely to be a year or so behind the elite guys).

Every year someone says "in a few years when all of these guys pan out there's going to be a logjam," and every year guys are traded and/or don't pan out. It's a great problem to have if you get there, but it's silly to do something about a problem that there's only a slim chance you're going to have. It's not like all of these guys are studs on the Moncada-Devers level, and it's not even like that would give them a 100% hit rate. I guarantee you they will not have 5-6 Pederson/Seager-type players in the system at the same time, never mind the same roster.

I've always liked Dubon, and have to admit that I'm a big believer now. I have him ranked #8 in the system at the end of, but in the same tier as Kopech, Travis, and B. Johnson (50 FV median projection).

Stuck between moncada and Benny, he is seeing a lot of juicy fastballs. He has proved to me he can hit fastballs.
Still need to see how he does with movement.

Nice contact rates (huge improvement vs early in his career), showing a little XB pop, and hitting well over .300. Plus, he looks like he could stick at SS. He just keeps improving, which is real nice to see.

Congrats to Dubon for getting promoted to Portland. That Portland lineup is looking really good now.

I assume Lin goes into a utility/back-up role.

I assume Lin goes into a utility/back-up role. I could see him getting starts if they decide to start moving Dubon and/or Moncada around the infield a little bit.

When can we just release Sean Coyle? While Rijo hasn't been hitting well in Portland, I thought he has some upside. Not saying we should have, but if we plan on getting Moncada reps @ 3B (where Coyle is residing), we could have kept Rijo (@ 2B) in Portland & let him play through it.
