We all know how this is going to turn out, right?

On July 8, BOS was 10.0 games behind the 2nd wild card and 10.5 games out in the divisional race, with 72 games to go.
On July 22, BOS is 6.0 games behind the 2nd wild card and 8.5 games out (nine in the loss column) in the divisional race, with 62 games to go.
Currently, the 2nd wild card would mean a one-game playoff in Anaheim for the right to face Oakland in the ALDS. Winning the division would mean an ALDS series versus Detroit.
BOS has eight games to go before the trade deadline. They are in prime position to pick up ground on BAL and SEA. (BAL has four games with LAA and four with SEA during this stretch. SEA has one game with NYM, three with CLE and four with BAL during this stretch.)
In my view, if the Red Sox go 4-4 or worse during this eight game stretch, they should sell off many of the free agent pieces (Gomes, Peavy, Uehara and/or Miller) to position themselves for the future.

It's already at that point. I mean we're at the point now where we cannot afford to have a 4-6 stretch for the rest of the year. And this is still pretty much the same team that went on a 7-15 stretch including a 7 game winning streak. I'm horrified at the possibility of going 8-0 in the next 8 and then going 2-12. Better to have it the other way around.

Also, I'd keep a closer eye on the divisonal race, since a longshot to get a one game playoff to get into the playoffs is in baseball a real crapshoot, not to me worthy of missing out on future assets- unless we wouldn't get much.

We might have narrowed the gap but I don't think we jumped anyone which is still a problem. Today only three AL teams have a worse record. Agree with JimEd. I fear we go 6-2 leading up to the deadline then go through a bad stretch like our ten game losing streak or the 1-7 streak.

They could just option Middlebrooks to Pawtucket, where he'd have plenty of playing time now that Cecchini is playing LF. If they fell out of the race by August, they could then waiver-trade Drew and bring Middlebrooks back. I wish I could claim that I had some inside knowledge as to why this was not a viable alternative (e.g., Middlebrooks options have been shown to hugely exacerbate global warming), but I just plain forgot about it. Globe reported that the Sox are "unwilling" to make a move now that will open up a space for him. Which indicates a continued interest in Carp's upside, which in turn, one hopes, means a chance for regular PT for both guys if we go into fire sale mode.

Middlebrooks hitting another hr tonight should be helping his cause some. My guess is that they still want to keep Middlebrooks because they think he has a good chance still of restoring his value and they are auditioning the mlb team right now for trade options. Mookie is also a keeper. In some scenarios one would think he should be with the mlb club also. Maybe they just still want to trade some of the guys above them. If I were them I would be auditioning the hell out of Carp, Gomes, Peavy, Miller, Badenhop, Koji, Mujica...etc.
