I think most of my bitching about roster construction is because I expect Cherington to protect Farrell from himself. Instead of taking away Carp, he should take away one of the relievers, so Farrell is forced to be a bit more flexible.

But I can't decide what is more asinine between Drew vs LHP, Nava vs LHP or Gomes vs RHP, leaving pitchers in 2-3 batters too long or thinking Tazawa is a ROOGY and Miller is a LOOGY. Nava doesn't get misused much because Farrell hates him.

Farrell will probably give the excuse that he's managing for 162 games here. He's forgetting that he's only managing for 63 now.

They should start tracking WAR for managers somehow.

They should start putting Vazquez in the game when a steal would be inconvenient...

See this is just bad in game management. If you want to bring the pitcher back in this situation and not give a reliever a clean inning, then you have to take him out as soon as he gives up a hit. Waiting til he gets two on that just dumb.

It would be fun watching this inning with Benny Hill music overlaid.

Why on earth is peavy out their for the 7th? WTF? !! Ok...but does it matter? Personally, he wouldn't even be on the team if it was up to me, so it could have. I definitely would have yanked him after the first home run when it was 2-0. For the people who say wait until the last second to trade him, here's a reason not to wait if we actually think there's a playoff chance.

Dustin Pedroia is hitless in his last 4 games and batting under .158 in his last 10.

Do we take bets on Nava PH for Gomes next?

For the people who say wait until the last second to trade him, here's a reason not to wait if we actually think there's a playoff chance. So actually I should be happy they haven't traded him yet, so that they don't get stupid ideas of being able to contend and fail to sell Gomes, Drew, etc. Gotcha.

I'm on board with that, but I hate this in between crap. I'm still convinced no one gets traded.

"Why did you bat Drew over Bogaerts and Ross?"
"Stephen's been swinging a hot bat lately."
"Why even start Drew at all vs. a lefty? Wouldn't Holt at short and Bradley in center- who is swinging a much hotter bat than Drew - give you a better chance of stringing together hits?"
"We thought it was a good night to give Jackie rest."
"Why didn't you have someone warming up before the sixth started. Or why even didn't you warm someone up after Peavy gave up the first home run?"
"We thought Toronto was off sides on the home run and review would've negated it."

Glimer of hope here. Bet he lets Ross bat anyway.

"We thought Toronto was off sides on the home run and review would've negated it." Someone needs to tell Farrell that there is no video review in soccer.

Drew could have been doing this the last 6 weeks or so. Play your way into shape....great Stephen.

I'm not sweating that loss much, but I am looking forward to never watching Peavy in a Sox uni again.

Tonight's loss is the best thing that could have happened. Now let's tank again tomorrow. Tank all the way to the 31st. But not so bad that we can 't trade some pieces.

See, to me this is more frustrating than losing a well played game. This was a winnable game that, because of our pitcher shouldve been managed like a playoff game. That would've meant Drew 9th, reliever warm to start the 6th in a 1 run game in case there was a hiccup, and Drew not playing or batting 9th.
Not saying the above would've guaranteed a win, but i would've maximized the probability of win potential.
Instead it was hunches, gut feelings, letting the game play you and watching opportunities slip though this team's fingers inning after inning. Manager provided a distinct handicap. Would they have won without these moves (or nonmoves) - unknown. They did have a winnable game quickly spiral out of reach with them, though.
