A quick standings check, given that we're getting to that part of the season.
Pawtucket: second place in division (4.5 GB), lead wild card by 0.5
Portland: lead division by 4.5, third-place team is 14.0 back (top two teams in each division make playoffs)
Salem: third-place (4.0 GB)
Greenville: last-place (7th, 19.0 GB)
Lowell: third place in division (8.0 GB), 6th in wild card (3.0 GB)
GCL: lead division by 1.0
DSL: lead division by 1.0, would lead wild card by 3.0
So about typical contention levels. Portland would need to collapse not to make the playoffs; Pawtucket, GCL, and DSL will have a tight stretch run; it's probably not happening for Salem and Lowell; and the Drive don't have a prayer.

Curious.. GCL Sox and Rays going at it during the night time hours for rain purposes?? Tigers still playing at noon time. They have been playing Saturday games last few weeks to get in rained out games however.

Red Sox Stats ?@redsoxstats 8m
I don't know if the Andres Torres experiment is over, but he's been removed from the @pawsox roster.
I have no idea what this is about.

Torres was placed on TIA and Roberts was activated from the PawSox DL. It could mean that Torres is figuring out whether he wants to remain in Pawtucket until the trade deadline, since I don't see any urgency to Boston activating him.

4 out of the last 5 starts for Pat Light have been outstanding. Possible turnaround?

4 out of the last 5 starts for Pat Light have been outstanding. Possible turnaround? Doesn't look like it. 10 Ks and 6 BB in 22 IP. And he's 23 in A+... He'll have to do a lot more than that to turn a corner. Edit: And thats just the 4 good starts - never mind the 1 bad one mixed in.

Decent outing for Barnes, assuming he is done. Didn't rack up the strikeouts, but only two hits allowed over 6 innings and only 1 run.

GCL game postponed....again. Yup and the third one I tried to attend. Still Sarasota per se, despite storms 5 miles to the east, has not had any appreciable rain in 2 weeks. Port Charlotte, 45 minutes to the south has rain most days. I am pretty sure that the prevalence of later p.m. storms is a reason GCL games are usually scheduled for noon. Sarasota though is a comparative desert and games would be mostly playable if all against the Orioles were at the Ed Smith complex nearer the gulf. Westerly winds knock down most showers unless they come off the gulf...a rarity during the summer.

He's given up 1 run in 3 of his last 5 starts and 0 runs in another. Only one bad start in that sequence with 5 runs in that one. It's progress for him.

Daytime storms here for those of us who are either native, or lived here for long enough know that the early afternoon summer storms generally pass through fast, while the PM ones have a tendency to settle in for awhile sometimes. The GCL games, if they would wait them out would have a tendency to get finished more if played at 10-noon, rather than during the PM hours. Have to wonder how much ball players like getting ready for games 6 days a week, like the Tigers GCL players have been of late and it was BLISTERING hot this past saturday for their noontime game, all because they also rarely wait out any rain and call games early due to poor weather reports.

It looks like he has found a delivery mechanism that is working. Now once he learns command, we might have something. He may be 23 but we knew coming in that he was a bit raw.

Decent outing for Barnes, assuming he is done. Didn't rack up the strikeouts, but only two hits allowed over 6 innings and only 1 run. Too many contrary things. 101 pitches/62 strikes over 6.1 2ER 3H but 3BB to only 2K and 7/8 GO to FO ratio. The corner isn't turned yet. Betts, Middlebrooks, Herrera and Rivero with 2 hits apiece. Betts and Herrera had triples. Rivero a double. Shaw was 1/3 with 2 walks. Cecchini's BA now down to .249, OPS down to .650, a lost year and Middlebrooks is looking more and more like the better bet. I'm really curious how much influence his parents have on his development. Another solid outing from Diaz 7IP 3ER 5H 1BB 7K. 101/70 6/5 GB/FB. 3 of the five hits were 2HRs and a 2B. Lavarnway had a HR, Swihart and Wilkerson with 2 hits.
