two years ago: blog.sfgate.com/giants/2012/05/11/scouting-report-on-heath-hembree-plus-other-notes-and-a-photo-of-the-new-kiddy-backpack-edlefsen-must-carry/"I asked Loux about Heath Hembree, the Giants’ top closing prospect in the minors. Hembree has a 2.08 ERA and eight saves for the Grizzlies. “I’ll tell you what,” Loux said, “I haven’t seen many 23-year-olds who throw ******98******* and locate it the way he does. I figured he was either going to throw hard and have no idea where it was going or he was going to locate well. That’s pretty rare for a closer, let alone a 23-year-old closer.” The Giants have Hembree working on a slider, but Loux said Hembree has not pulled it out of the holster yet in a game. He’s working on it in the bullpen, Loux said, and catchers are having a hard time catching it. He’s getting his saves with one pitch, the fastball."

Pretty good haul for Peavy it seems. Down year or not I never thought we'd get a guy who just played in the futures game. mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20140624&content_id=81435992¬ebook_id=81439610&vkey=notebook_sf&c_id=sfSAN FRANCISCO -- Left-hander Edwin Escobar will be the Giants' representative in the 2014 Sirius XM All-Star Futures Game on Sunday, July 13, at Target Field. So what are the ceilings for Escobar and Hembree? I'm certainly no expert but from reading a little about them it seems Escobar could be a #3 Starter and Hembree a potential closer/high-leverage RP.

Escobar has one option left after this year, Hembree has two options left after this year.

Imagine what the price is to acquire Jon Lester if Peavy brings back two pretty good prospects? Have to think Lester would fetch 4 top prospects, not many farm systems can offer that.

So who thinks we shouldn't trade Lester now?
This return for a rental of Peavy is absurd.

Jason Parks ?@professorparks 9m Edwin Escobar was highly overrated last season because of his AA numbers. Scouting didn't back up stats. It's a soft back-end profile.

Maybe ST.Louis will step up for Lackey? I will feel better if Ben cab grab a outfielder before the deadline. An outfielder with pop.

Sickels on our alliterative duo, Dec '13: "2) Edwin Escobar, LHP, Grade B+: Borderline B. Throws three quality pitches for strikes, dominated the California League and continued to perform well after moving up to Double-A. Future number three starter I think, relatively high floor but doesn’t have Crick’s physical ceiling. ... 8) Heath Hembree, RHP, Grade B-: B- is a high grade for a relief prospect in my view. I think his command improvements are real and he should be a successful short man." Hmm where do they slot in the Sox system? I would think Escobar would fit somewhere in the top 10. They bought a bit low on Escobar ... PCL stats are always a bitch to evaluate, but BP has Fresno as a neutral park and has his FRA+ "Fair Run Average" as 94; last year he was 132 and 124. He's basically their (considerably younger, though) Matt Barnes, who went from 121 to 84. I think he'd be 11 or 12 (after Coyle).

yikes: Brian MacPherson ?@brianmacp 16m Edwin Escobar has a 5.11 ERA in 20 starts in the PCL this year, but he was Baseball America's No. 56 prospect before this season.

Some of it is the change in leagues, and some is not. We'll get a better chance to evaluate in Pawtucket. Still no spot for Owens in AAA.

WOW good work Ben, that is all I got. And, some of the know-everything guys think we should have dumped him for nothing just a few days ago Because keeping Jake Peavy a day longer will ruin the 2014 Boston Red SOX!!

Not too disappointed with the haul, but I would have liked a bat such as Mac Williamson in return.

For Johnson and Owens to have spots next year somebody needs to be traded.

BBA pre-2013 (free online): www.baseballamerica.com/online/prospects/rankings/organization-top-10-prospects/2013/2614592.html7. Heath Hembree, rhp Born: Jan 13, 1989 B-T: R-R Ht.: 6-4 Wt.: 210 Drafted: College of Charleston, 2010 (5th round). Signed by: Jeremy Cleveland Heath HembreeBackground: Hembree lasted five rounds in the 2010 draft because he was a seldom-used college closer who didn't pitch as a high school senior while rehabbing a knee injury sustained in a football game. He breezed through his first three stops in pro ball before hitting a speed bump in 2012. A strained flexor tendon cost him five weeks, though he rebounded with a solid Arizona Fall League. Scouting Report: With a fastball that approaches triple digits and the makings of a power slider, Hembree has closer stuff. He works at 93-96 mph with quality life when fully healthy and got back up to 95 in the AFL. He's doing a better job of maintaining his arm slot, which has helped the consistency of his 82-85 mph slider. His changeup probably won't become anything more than a show-me pitch, but he has made some progress with it. If anything, Hembree's injury and diminished velocity showed him the importance of having dependable offspeed stuff. While he can be overpowering, he also has bouts of wildness. The Future: The Giants could use Hembree sooner rather than later in their bullpen, which is light on hard throwers from the right side. He'll probably begin 2013 in Triple-A, but a solid spring would put him in line for a callup the first time San Francisco finds itself short an arm.

Of 2014 BA Prospects graders Manuel, Badler, Cooper and Eddy only Manuel has Escobar in top 50 prospects and none has Hembree. Giants rated at 19th for its farm system. Looking at above reported performances for the two this year, perhaps the early euphoria could be tempered a bit. Hembree is apparently a one pitch pitcher who operates 92-94 to maintain control. He did pitch 8 relief innings for S.F last year yielding 4 hits with 12 Strikeouts...so that was impressive.

Why not send Escobar to Portland? Based on his age and our depth in Pawtucket, what would be the harm?

This shows how we overvalue prospects sometimes. I think it's clear that Lester would get us a good amount more than Piscotty, an idea a lot of people here have liked. Sorry know this is kind of OT.
I'm excited to see what Koji and potentially Lester get us.

For Johnson and Owens to have spots next year somebody needs to be traded. SP's projected 2015 roster notwithstanding, I don't see Ranaudo and Wright in AAA next year. Certainly not both. One of them could be next year's Workman, the guy who is in MLB whenever there's a guy on the DL. Barnes, Escobar, Owens, Johnson, Ranaudo on the Pawtucket shuttle with Chris Hernandez as his backup.

Side benefit, this should have an impact on LA's interest in Lester.
