Here are some quick excerpts from the BP preseason top 10 on Escobar and Hembree. On Escobar: "The Venezuelan southpaw mixes his pitches well, relying heavily on his solid-average fastball and quality changeup to miss bats and keep hitters off balance, mixing in a slider that has been especially effective against left-handed bats. He’s a good arm and a future major leaguer—which is a huge win for the Giants regardless of the outcome—but a long shot to reach his ultimate upside without a step forward in playable intensity from the slider and more consistent velocity from the fastball." On Hembree: "But Hembree could have easily cracked this list based on his impact potential in a late-innings capacity and low risk factor involved. With a plus fastball that can show plus-plus velocity (but often at the expense of control), and a very sharp mid-80s slider, the 25-year-old righty will have a good chance to miss a lot of bats in a major-league bullpen going forward." My own personal comps-- Escobar seems like Brian Johnson, Hembree seems like what we thought Alex Wilson would be circa 2012.

Am I crazy for thinking Daniel Bard when I hear that Hembree scouting report? And I'm not talking about the broken one.

Jason Parks ?@professorparks 9m Edwin Escobar was highly overrated last season because of his AA numbers. Scouting didn't back up stats. It's a soft back-end profile. Some "experts" said the same things about Henry Owens last year.

I don't know anything about either guys returning except what I just read so I'll control my enthusiasm on that end, but it should be noted that getting ANYTHING out of Peavy, who at this point had to be the worst starting pitcher in all of baseball, is a small miracle by itself.

Yea obviously anyone who wanted to DFA Peavy were idiots. However price dropping doesn't have to have anything to do with San Fran. Important note: I'm not suggesting it has, just disputing the claim waiting was clearly better. For all we know another team had offered more a week ago then pulled out and this package was a step down. We should probably just focus on the actual deals as opposed to negotiation strategies. You really think someone may have offered more a week ago and Ben said no? Seems unlikely.

Getting anything of value for a two month rental of Peavy is crazy, so getting two decent arms has to be considered a major success. I'm sure the Sox would gladly pay $2.5 for the pair of arms
Definitely gives them more to work with if they were looking at a bigger deal given the now deeper pitching crop at AA/AAA

Buster Olney ?@buster_ESPN 9m The Giants and Red Sox are splitting remainder of Jake Peavy's salary for this year (about $5 million total; $2.5 million on each team). This augurs well, too: our willingness to turn $ into better talent.

Well I wouldn't go as far as to anoint him the worst...plenty of other terrible options out there....but he certainly hasn't been good and to get what we got for him could certainly be classified as a good haul.

Escobar is 6-1, 185. Hembree is 6-4, 210.

Good deal, and good luck to peavy. Will still be rooting for him in sf this year.
Like the return. I like hembree as someone who can help us as early as next year. Just browsing his stats looks like an elite k rate, playable bb rate, and bad hr rate.

@marchulet: Edwin Escobar is a strong return for Jake Peavy. #SFGiants No 2 prospect. Has a shot to be significant MLB contributor in 2015 #RedSox
@marchulet: A Heath Hembree fan. Floor is middle reliever, ceiling is high-leverage closer; throws strikes, not afraid to challenge #RedSox #SFGiants
@brianmacp: .@keithlaw writes that the Red Sox "got much less of a return than I expected for Peavy.

I see the two as options to Webster or Ranaudo as the third and fourth parts of the Stanton rare, behind Betts and another (hopefully not Swihart, but who knows)

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Escobar: Low ceiling starter, just in futures game, misleading PCL numbers due to parks and BABIP, Change isnt good enough against righties who haveve hit him hard this year (334/.395/.603) FB: 88-91 lacks too much movement, slider 74-77 very good against lefties, could be a lefty specialist now, Hembree: Fastball is down this year, slider flashes plus. Leaves fastball up too much, homerun prone. Law somehow believes we couldve gotten crick or susac and thinks that SFG did well in the trade.

I don't understand Keith Law's logic on this one. How in the hell is Peavy, a guy who is for better or worse a bottom 10-15 starter in the league to date, going to land you a better haul than what we got.
I don't see it.

Both pitchers are on the 40-man roster also. so does this demand another trade quickly? Or who is a candidate to fall of the Sox 40?

I'm still pretty surprised that we got any significant positive value for Peavy. I wasn't as down on him as many on this site, but I still didn't exactly consider him an asset.

Jim Callis ?@jimcallismlb 9m Quickie trade analysis: redsox got more than I thought they would for Peavy. I like Escobar's upside as LHSP, Hembree is decent. @giants Sean McAdam ?@sean_McAdam 31m Consensus from independent evaluators was Red Sox did well in Peavy trade. Lot of talk about stockpiled arms to be used in other deal(s).
