Just found out Cespedes is a finalist for the Gold Glove. This changes everything. Wow. Do they have gold gloves for DH too?

If we could Eduardo Rodriguez for Andrew Miller, who also was a rental player for the Orioles, I am certain we could of got a top prospect for Jon Lester. Renato Nunez or Matt Chapman would of been reasonable compensation and I am sure one of them for Jon Lester straight up would of got the deal done. wow, I would much rather have Cespedes than Renato Nunez or Matt Chapman. I have no doubt that both of those prospects were available, since the A's traded Russell for Samardzija, and clearly weren't scared to trade prospects, and I'd guess they would rather keep the major league team stronger and trade away more prospects than have to trade Cespedes for Lester, but Cespedes is a much better return than Renato Nunez or Matt Chapman.

I don't remember being too excited about the Cespedes trade because I've never been a huge fan, but I saw the point. Getting a MLB-quality outfielder was a really big priority for the team. When the trade was made, Mookie Betts had a sub-300 OBP on less than 40 PAs, and Rusney Castillo was just working out for teams. The Sox OF looked pretty dreadful now and in the future ... I don't know that the trade looks worse in retrospect because of that, but it's important to remember the context.

What if, instead of signing him long term, they turn him over for a top starting pitcher like Johnny Cueto? Would that MAKE SENSE? I would love that trade, Johnny Cueto is a solid pitcher. And is under 30 years old. That would be a instant upgrade to our rotation. The Reds and Red Sox match up very well in this regard. The Reds need three things, young pitching, a solid corner outfielder who won't kill their payroll, and salary relief from one of their bad long-term contracts. These are three things that the Red Sox can provide. The question is, if Reds ownership is forward thinking enough to allow Cueto to be traded get these three things. A Cueto trade would likely be immediately unpopular with Reds fans, even if Cespedes were included. However if they don't take care of the three problems mentioned above, they will face the problem of a roster filled with declining players, without the farm system or budget to replace these players. That quickly leads to the team becoming the Cubs or Astros in a couple of years.

Just found out Cespedes is a finalist for the Gold Glove. This changes everything. Wow. Do they have gold gloves for DH too? It must be his intangibles! But yeah, it's just further evidence that GGs are meaningless. And apparently they do have GGs for DHs. Rafael Palmiero won a GG in 1999 after 128 games as a DH and only 28 at 1B.

sounds like sour grapes to me. They made the deal...he doesn't want to play here...that's pretty obvious. Move on to the next order of business.
