I'm not sure that the Shields market is softening. Sure, teams aren't beating down the door to give him $110m+, but by all accounts, a ton of teams are interested in him as a stable veteran sort (for instance, the two latest teams connected to Shields are the Marlins and the Diamondbacks, who you might not expect to be buyers). Sure, supply/ demand curve. It seems much well less known if the Sox are actually interested at the higher ends of his price range, say $100MM. If they were, you'd think there'd be a deal already. I think it's still pretty good that they don't need him, which can only help negotiations.

Didn't realize that Escobar is down to one option left, wtf San Francisco? Even though he's only 22, there's probably little chance that he makes some huge strides this year and prove he can be a starter (with a different team). I predict he'll get moved to the pen sometime this summer and see some time in the major league pen without some unforseen improvements. Maybe we should insist on including him in any trade because there's almost no chance he can prove he's a starter with the Red Sox organization and whatever trade value he has plummets to unproven bullpen guy. Which is where we were with Webster and RDLR, btw...

Which is where we were with Webster and RDLR, btw... It's not San Francisco's fault. He signed in 2008 and had to be protected from the 2012 Rule 5 Draft. He was thus on the 40-man roster in 2013 and 2014. If anything, blame the Rangers who signed him in 2008 and placed him in the DSL in 2009, so he was two years in before even coming stateside. (FWIW, I had completely forgotten that the Rangers had signed him.) The 40-man rules really do kind of screw over the July 2 IFAs. The fact that 16 year old IFAs have the same Rule 5 clock as 18-year-old U.S. high school draftees doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

Escobar isn't really a starter-quality arm anyway. This site is projecting him to a bullpen role anyway at AAA and he'll probably ride the Pawtucket shuttle a little bit this year.
