The other interesting thing I took away from that podcast is that Badler mentions that even the fast Cuban guys struggle with stealing bases at the major league level, largely because Cuban catchers have poor mechanics/weak arms and so they've never had to hone their basestealing instincts/timing. He talks about how the Rangers had to spend a few years teaching Leonys Martin (who is a legit speedster) how to steal bags before he started doing so efficiently. You can see this in Martin's minor league stats-- he starts his minor league career with a bleh 33/54 stolen base rate before eventually rounding into a more efficient basestealer in recent years.
So, the takeaway: Castillo might be fast, but don't expect him to be an efficient basestealer in the early part of his career. We've already seen this in the minors-- he's been caught stealing a couple times already.

Bumping this thread to give congrats to Castillo on his first HR and almost getting another. May there be many more.
The other Castillo thread is just the shaming of a long time poster.

12:11 Comment From PR what should I expect for Rusney Castillo? Is he really playing CF and batting leadoff over Mookie? 12:12 Kiley McDaniel: I would expect him to start in right field, maybe left. BOS has some questions about his defensive instincts
So if he won't get on base and there are questions about his defensive instincts...

That goes against everything we saw on the field, though. And heard, I think, from other evaluators as well. His defensive instincts in CF have been quite good. He may not be JBJ out there, but by all accounts, he projects to be a plus defender in CF.

Really unimportant to me where he plays (RF or CF) because if Mookie is the better CF I'd rather have him out there in CF. Castillo has looked plenty good though. McDaniel's source has always been down on his defense though, as McDaniel is the only one I've seen consistently say no to him in CF.

The question is which is the stronger combination: Betts in CF, Castillo in RF, or the reverse. I'm sure Castillo can play right, Betts is still learning OF and might be best settling in at center. Or not.

I think Mookie could improve quite a bit with a full spring training in the OF. I doubt they bounce him around much.

Per Bradford this morning, Castillo will play both CF and RF when he reports to Puerto Rico around 12/2.

Will he be able to bat twice in the lineup as well?

New piece up on fangraphs with a scout's perspective on Castillo in the AFL. You can draw your own conclusions, but lots of red flags. I really don't want the Red Sox to provide Castillo with a dispensation to suck given so many OF alternatives, yet I suspect that's what we'll see if he struggles

Not pretty. Hopefully he was trying to avoid injury a bit and wasn't going as hard as he could.

I'm not going to put stock in much about him until about 6 months from now. He never had a spring training and hadn't played in 18 months.

“@ac13alex: 2 games might not be enough but Rusney Castillo can play baseball.”
His manager Alex Cora
Also went 3-4

Interesting to hear Cora's take on Castillo's slow time to first. The impression from watching him at the end of last season was that the swing left him poorly positioned, pointed in the wrong direction. He steps off to the third base side and releases the bat in that direction, so the momentum is all wrong for a quick start. Sounds as if he motors well once he gets it going. And yes, everything else is quite positive. Cora's take, and he's no dummy, is that Castillo is a very focused individual.

I don't think he's necessarily just talking about the slow times to first, but the fact that he looks like he's not trying (see the Fangraphs post above to see one scout absolutely killing him for dogging it).

I think Castillo will be a good player for us for a long time. I think it'd be foolish to expect to get Puig, but he's got speed and looks like he will be a good all-around hitter.

Peter Gammons referred to Castillo as "highly educated" in a recent article. Not saying this has anything to do with how good Castillo actually is, but I feel like Gammons is usually the lead conductor of the hype-train of a lot of sox prospects.
