2015 Draft Discussion
|
Post by Guidas on Aug 5, 2014 14:47:03 GMT -5
And it's started already. Baseball America has a piece on the Area Code Games, which means Keith Law will have one soon, as well. And then the torrent is unleashed. The name dropping has begun and BA waves Justin Hooper as the High School pitcher who should start your Pavlovian Drool Reflex as the presumed #1 HS arm in the draft (at least at this early date). Excerptage: Hooper, who entered in relief after a three-inning stint to start the game by righthander Joe DeMers, did not throw a fastball below 92 in his first inning, sitting 92-94 while touching 96. His velocity largely sat in the 90-93 range the rest of the way. Hooper offered a two-seam fastball with greater sink at 88-91 in his second and third frames...Hooper generates glove-side run to his fastball and showed the ability to locate to either outer-third of the plate. The UCLA commit relied on his fastball-curveball combination in his first frame, throwing another offering (a slider) only once in 19 pitches in his opening frame. His curveball showed at least above-average potential with considerable depth and shape, as he demonstrated feel for the offering by throwing it for a strike more than two-thirds of the time. In the second and third innings he used his newly added slider more frequently.Another name to pay attention to, according to BA, is Nick Plummer: Plummer launched the second pitch of the event, a fastball on the inner third, for a towering home run to right field that caused quite a reaction from scouts. The batted ball was very similar to the home run he hit during ECP.
“You almost never see amateur players hit balls like that, and he has done it twice in the last week,” a national crosschecker said...One scouting director said that Plummer, a Michigan commit, is positioning himself as one of the better high school hitters in the entire class because of his physical tools, advanced feel for the strike zone and performance over the last week.

Wayyyyyyyyyyyy (not enough Ys) too early but I read that Justin Hooper thing this mourning and definitely had me intrigued.
From the early read I've been doing is that there are a couple of elite guys in the HS position player ranks with Brendan Rogers and Daz Cameron leading the way.
It seems like the HS position player will be on the strong side with other guys like Ryan Johnson, John Aiello (may have spelled it wrong) and now Nick Plummer also getting buzz.
The TV showcases are coming around the corner looking forward to them.

Copying some info from the protected draft pick thread:
Some Area Code Games tweets re: Justin Hooper:
Clint Longenecker ?@clint_BA 1h Big, projectable LHP Justin Hooper had an electric outing. T95 in first with quick arm and fastball life to go w/ 4 pitch mix at ACG
Chris Rodriguez ?@chrisrod13 2h 6'7 LHP Justin Hooper has some stuff. 89-92 in 2nd inning of work with a good CH, arm speed was good. Breaking ball ranged from 73-79 mph.
Nathan Rode ?@nathanrode 3h LHP Justin Hooper (CA) sat 91-94, touched 95-96 in 1st inning of work with sharp curveball in mid 70s. Listed 6-7, 230.
Kiley McDaniel ?@kileymcd 3h NorCal prep lefty Justin Hooper might be the best high school pitcher in the country. 6'7/230 and 93-96 in his first inning at Area Codes.

Who are your top 10 players, as of now, for the 2015 draft amfox? I know Cameron is the consensus #1 but other than that rankings seem to be all over the place In no particular order: Cameron, Matuella, Bregman, Rodgers and Kirby are the early consensus top five. I would put Hooper, Fulmer, Tucker, Buehler and Ferrell (plus Aiken, if he goes the JUCO route) at the bottom of the top ten. It's extremely early, but the draft looks top-heavy in college pitchers and HS outfielders.

Bergman from LSU could be a really special player.

if Aiken was to reenter the draft this year, assuming he doesn't show anything different that would drop his value, wouldn't he once again be the top rated draft prospect? With all the stuff they were saying about him they made him sound like a rare talent.

I wonder who the Vanderbilt commit we'll try and fail to sign away will be this year? On a more serious note I'm more concerned with the different tiers of talent and where the drop-offs are.
And before James pulls his hair out it's Bregman not Bergman.

I "think" there's a rule that you need a players permission to draft him if you drafted him once before and failed to sign him.

? for you guys. Ryan Boldt who the Sox drafted in 13, is he eligible for the 15 draft as well, or how does that work since he went to college instead?

One player that I hope the Red Sox draft after the first round is Chris Betts, so we can make players named Betts the new market inefficiency.

Could someone please tell me what draft order the Astros will be placed in for not signing Aiken. I keep reading conflicting reports that they will get the Second or the fourth pick. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide. Right now it's currently both, which explains the confusion. transactions.mlbtraderumors.com/widget/reverse-standings/2014/

There are draft eligible sophomores but I don't know the exact rules on them. mlb.mlb.com/mlb/draftday/rules.jspYou have to be 21 years old (which I believe is really 21 within 45 days after the draft?), or have completed your jr or sr years. Boldt was born in Nov 1994, so he won't be eligible until the 2016 draft.
