Draft order (Red Sox will pick #7)
|
Post by sibbysisti on Sept 24, 2012 15:44:43 GMT -5
Its not like the NFL, NHL, NBA where the draft takes place soon after the season.
We have to temper our excitement over a top 10 pick for another eight months after the season ends and the draft order is known.
In between, of course, the draft-eligibles play another college/high school season. Lots of debating time. I know I'll be paying closer attention to college/hs programs in the spring than I ever have before.

It's the only race that matters - the battle for a top 10 draft spot (as of 9/25am):
#6 MIA -- (87 losses, NYMx3, ATLx3, PHIx3) #7 TOR 1.0 GB (86 losses, BALx2, MFYx4, MINx3) #8 BOS 2.5 GB (85 losses, BALx3, TBx2, MFYx3) #9 PIT (compensation pick due to failure to sign Mark Appel) #10 KC 4.0 GB (83 losses, CLEx3, DETx6) #11 NYM 4.0 GB (83 losses, MIAx3, PITx3, ATLx3)
BOS has 8 games left and MIA/TOR/KC/NYM have 9 games left.
Note: the top 10 draft picks are protected and cannot be lost.
It should be noted that BOS loses a tiebreaker with any team. Tiebreaker order (for the better draft pick) is KC, MIA, NYM, TOR and BOS.

Go Blue Jays!

I hear you but don't like the odds of us passing them. Is anybody here an anesthesiologist or willing to become one by draft time?

Blue Jays won, everyone else lost or losing.

Blue Jays won, everyone else lost or losing. Realistically that's the race. It's either 7 or 8 for us.

We still have a shot at #6...with Miami playing NYM the last 3 games of the season and the Blue Jays playing the Twins (two teams directly in front of us).. we still have a shot to leap two teams to get to number six. We just have to hope the Red Sox don't go on a little winning streak now.

Blue Jays won, everyone else lost or losing. Realistically that's the race. It's either 7 or 8 for us. We've won 1 less game than the Royals and Mets. We lose tie-breakers to both. I'd say very tenuous. 9th and 10th which drop to 10 and 11 are still very much in play. Much more so than 6 where we have a 3 game lead and lose tie-breakers.

We're 2 games "ahead" of KC and the Mets in the ordering race to the bottom, but really only 1 game, because we lose tiebreakers. So really, our situation is still very much in flux. Given the problematic crop of FA this winter, would it be so bad to have an extra incentive NOT to spend on a "top" free agent who would cost us a first-round pick? Is the upcoming draft going to be one where the difference between the #8 and #11 pick will be worth all that much (other than money allotment?)?

I believe you are mistaken. We had this discussion earlier in this thread. Note amfox1's post on p.5.

It's the only race that matters - the battle for a top 10 draft spot (as of 9/27am):
#6 MIA -- (89 losses, ATL, NYMx3, PHIx3) #7 TOR 2.0 GB (87 losses, MFYx4, MINx3) #8 BOS 2.5 GB (87 losses, BALx3, MFYx3) #9 PIT (compensation pick due to failure to sign Mark Appel) #10 KC 4.0 GB (85 losses, CLEx3, DETx4) #11 NYM 5.0 GB (84 losses, PIT, MIAx3, ATLx3)
BOS has 6 games left and MIA/TOR/KC/NYM have 7 games left. All teams but BOS play on Thursday.
Note: the top 10 draft picks are protected and cannot be lost.
It should be noted that BOS loses a tiebreaker with any team. Tiebreaker order (for the better draft pick) is KC, MIA, NYM, TOR and BOS.

In a stunning return to this fan's pre-2004 hopefulness, I'm sure that the good will of the Adam Greenberg story will propel the Marlins to a 7 game win streak to finish out the season. Bet on it.

We pretty much have a top 9 pick locked up. The Mets are up to 72 wins. We're not going to split our last 6 games. And, even if we did. They will win at least one. We're tied with Toronto at 69 wins. That's for the 7/8 slots. KC is sitting at 70 wins. We lost the tie-breaker. So, no room to spare. Have to finish behind them. They played Detroit tough this week but couldn't win. Hoping they beat the Indians 2/3 this weekend. That would lock them in at the 9th pick. But, it slides back to 10 with the Pittsburgh supplemental pick. Come on John Farrell. Motivate your current team. You can knock the Yankees back into the 1 game wild card spot and help your future team by ensuring them a higher draft pick!

Toronto won there game in hand tonight which is huge. It basically means whoever losses the most games over the next 6 will finish in the 7 spot. The Red Sox play the Orioles and Yankees. The Jays have the Yankees and Twins
Like I have said for awhile, those last three games against the Twins are the best things we have going for us.

Their series against Cleveland may be as important to us as the Toronto series with the Twins. And in more intrigue, given that the Mets won again today, really putting them ahead of the 8 Ball, as it were, what do people want to happen in this weekend's Mets/Miami series? Miami isn't unpassable yet, and maybe we can afford a few Mets losses this weekend, putting Miami in play for spot #6.

I hope I'm doing this right.
It's the only race that matters - the battle for a top 10 draft spot (as of 9/28am):
#6 MIA -- (90 losses, NYMx3, PHIx3) #7 TOR 3.0 GB (87 losses, MFYx3, MINx3) #8 BOS 3.0 GB (87 losses, BALx3, MFYx3) #9 PIT (compensation pick due to failure to sign Mark Appel) #10 KC 4.0 GB (86 losses, CLEx3, DETx3) #11 NYM 6.0 GB (84 losses, MIAx3, ATLx3)
All teams (BOS/MIA/TOR/KC/NYM) have 6 games left.
Note: the top 10 draft picks are protected and cannot be lost.

KC has 3 left with CLE and 3 with DET; other than that, you're good.
Except of course for the childish vulgarity that is referring to the New York Yankes as the MFY rather than the NYY. But then, everybody here does that.

But then, everybody here does that. Detroit is up 2 on Chisox. Could make their last couple of games meaningless if they can extend it a game. I think KC wins more games than us. I would love to pick 7th. Miami is in turmoil. They won't win crap.
