That may be true to an extent, but if the creativity involved puts the Red Sox at a competitive disadvantage then they would really just be outsmarting themselves.
Think of it this way - if (before the new draft rules were in place) there was a very good prospect with high upside coming out of HS who was demanding, for whatever reason, that he be given an ML contract, wouldn't the team just pass on him at #7? It's not worth the downside.

That's a reasonable analysis. I guess I was looking at it as a chance to grab an International Free Agent without having to go through a draft or a posting process.

I would be surprise if he doesn't sign with Texas. They gonna ge Beras and Otani on the same year. Good job MLB.

Bumping this very old thread to link to this very good episode of Effectively Wild (BP's podcast) on Otani, who has not only been the best pitcher in NPB this year, but also the best hitter: www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=29773Unfortunately, as discussed on the podcast, Otani is signed through 2018, and with the new posting rules (which cap the posting fee that his team can receive at $20), Nippon has no incentive to post him until after the 2017 season. But that's not all that far away, and Otani would be a terrific get for a deep-pocketed team who needs both a front-of-the-rotation pitcher and would be willing to DH him on his days off. Hm, I wonder who fits the bill...

Does he project to be able to hit in the majors well enough to DH? This is one of the most interesting players ever if he's legit.

Whoever doesn't come away with Fernandez (and possibly Price), Otani is one very interesting and desirable alternative. I'd love to see the Sox go after either Fernandez or Otani. All while Espinoza, Kopech, and hopefully Groome all get closer to the majors.

He's hitting .339/.449/.646 this year in 156 PAs, which is the best triple-slash in the NPB. He's got a career .264/.332/.473 career NPB line in 713 career PAs, which is crazy-impressive for a guy's age 18 to 21 seasons in the second best baseball league in the world, who, oh by the way, has mostly focused on pitching his entire career. He's essentially the Japanese Babe Ruth and has been received as such in Japan. The reporter that they interviewed opined, with no hesitation, that he was good enough to be a major leaguer as a hitter alone. I don't know too much about him beyond what I've read and heard, but based on that, I'm inclined to agree.

Oh my god I didn't realize how good of a hitter he was. That's absurd. Can't imagine what he'll get when he finally comes here in terms of a contract. He is definitely going to be a ton of fun to follow.

I'm not doubting his abilities but I predict that if/when he comes to MLB it will be strictly to pitch (unless he goes to the NL, obviously).
And yes, I want him badly. BTW, his pitching numbers are better than Darvish's through the same age.

Otani just won NPB's home rune derby:
Not the most impressive home run derby performance I've ever seen, but the raw power and bat speed are evident, and he has a pretty lefty swing.

Too bad his arm will be burned out by the time he is posted or free to negotiate.

A prospect is fun to watch, but trading him for a sure thing in the Majors is never a losing deal.

Imagine if he played the field then pitched in relief hahahahaha. The 1st baseman comes out and throws 95-100 strikes out the side for the HOLD. lol

Does raising the age for international free agents affect players who are posted? Otani wouldn't be a free agent.

The fact that baseball is potentially blocking Otani is really bad for baseball. Hate this, even if the Sox don't get Otani in the end.

Can't that be exposed pretty easily with a loophole? Some team could offer Otani 1 year 5 million with a vesting option that if he starts 5 games, he gets a 10 year 250 million dollar extension.

That's the real prize to get. The Red Sox will have a ton of competition for him, but he's the guy to go crazy for. I'd rather the Sox get Otani more than I'd like to see them get Harper, Machado, or even Kershaw the following offseason.
It would be fascinating. He could DH on the days he doesn't pitch and I wonder - would he be allowed to be the DH on the days he does pitch? Would the team that signs him even allow him to be a two way player? Or would he insist upon it as a condition of signing?

I hope all the people who say things like "Hey it's not my money! We HAD to have an ace!" are ready for us being out on Otani because we sunk 217m into David Albatr-err, Price.

If Price continues to win during the regular season and thinks he can make more he'll opt out. So there's that. Still amazed by this news. I don't see any reason for Nippon Ham Fighters to do this, unless they are desperate for cash, which is usually not the case. Anyway, he'll likely be a Dodger or a Yankee, so go Dodgers...
