This is good stuff righ here. He talks about how scouts say he is able to join a front of a rotation and the middle of a batting order right away. "Dave Dombrowski said sometimes there are really really rare once in a lifetime guys"

Injured - out six weeks. And has yet to pitch this year: www.fanragsports.com/news/japanese-phenom-shohei-otani-miss-six-weeks-strained-thigh-muscle/btw, not sure if Keith Law has seen him live but based on video analysis he's said in his chats multiple times that he doesn't think will play here because of the difference in pitching. However, he does think he can be a top 5 pitcher in MLB if he comes over before his arm is frayed (they throw a LOT in Japan).

btw, I absolutely think they plan on blowing past the threshold after this year - whether it's for someone like Omani if he does actually become available - or, more likely Machado or Harper, with extensions to Mookie and possibly Xander and JBJ. I hope the Sox are all over Otani and hopefully he choses to come here. 200 million is hard to pass up for 2 years but he seems hellbent on coming here. He's just projecting he can get that 2 year, 200 million dollar contract on his second deal. I find it really hard to believe he would be a two-way player over here, the injury risk is way too high even if he's just a DH on his off-pitching days. Aren't pitchers on a pretty strict regimen that doesn't involve hitting and running the bases? Maybe he could pitch and do some occasional pinch-hitting (or be an everyday positional player with the occasional relief stint). Something like if he's a full time position player mostly he'd get 140 games in the field and then pitch like 20 innings. If he's mainly a pitcher, get 190 innings and 120 atbats. It would take a manager much more skilled than Farrell to figure out is all I know.

60 Minutes did a feature on him which aired last night. Wherever he signs, he'll become an instant celebrity. Tall, handsome, nice smile and personality. Pretty good at baseball, too.

Otani is someone I really would love to see try two-way in the majors.
But yeah, I share reservations about Farrell getting to manage that.

I see no reason why Farrell can't manage him. After all, decisions on how he will be used, pitching/hitting scenarios, will be decided in consult with scouts, DD and the player development staffs. The only problem would be the gap in rotation starts and how they will be handled. Japan hurlers are used to more time between starts. John, a long time pitching coach, in addition to manager, is amply qualified for that issue.

One thing the Sox have going for them: they're contenders already. My guess is, he's gonna want the biggest stage ASAP. The Yankees can't provide that; LAD and Cubs can. Maybe SF, although they're up against the cap (or over it, I think). Can't see him in Cleveland, as good as they are. I wouldn't count the Yankees out of the Otani sweepstakes. They have a very good farm system and should be on the way up. They have the money and the need for pitching and Tanaka is also on the team assuming the Yankees throw some money at him which I suspect they will. I do see the Yankees, Cubs (he'd be a great fit with the Cubs and there's no way Theo isn't going all out for him), and Dodgers going the hardest after him. I suspect the Red Sox will be in the mix, but I don't know that they will come away with him. Dombrowski likes his "elite" stars and there is no better one to get than Otani in my opinion. He fits what the Red Sox need better than anybody coming up on the horizon. The outfield is full so Bryce Harper and his outrageous demands are not exactly necessary and if Devers is what they think he is they don't need to throw big bucks at Machado. The big get for the Red Sox would be Otani who can help absorb the loss of either Sale and/or Porcello down the road, but still play a position or DH (with Ramirez sliding over to 1b and Travis becoming expendable) if need be. I'm not counting them out from their end. The issue to me is that, if Otani really is willing to leave money on the table to take on the best, on the biggest stage, then he's going to want to go to an immediate contender. In the end, what is really going to matter is what motivates him. Otherwise, I agree with you. I think Otani is the big prize, both in terms of fit and potential marketability/star power.

Every big market team can only throw 4.75 million at Otani. The small market teams are the ones with the advantage with an extra million to throw at Otani's way. Money will not be the factor that separates Boston from LA to New York. Need to keep that in mind.
I firmly believe that Otani is the number one prospect in the entire world. I'd take him over Benintendi, Moncada, anyone really. It's scary to think about the value this guy could bring on a 5 million dollar minor league contract. For this reason alone, I see every team in baseball all over him.

Which is why I loved seeing the first post of this thread, from 2012, linking to an article saying that Eddie Romero had met with Otani. Again, that's FIVE YEARS AGO.

I had to check to see if Eddie Romero is still around, and yes! Assistant GM now.
My optimism about signing him went up, a bit.

I remember his name being discussed on the old SP.com forum when he wants to go to MLB instead of the NPB but it was never mentionned he was good with the bat too. I'll keep my expectations low but I would LOVE to have him.

According to Heyman, the Red Sox have in total acquired $3.25 mil in intl pool money. That is slightly less than the ceiling, so potentially the Sox could make another trade. Also in the article, apparently the Red Sox and the Yankees are the only two teams that have expanded their budgets to $8 mil. www.fanragsports.com/mlb/heyman-yankees-red-sox-positioned-battle-otani/ADD: Assuming Heyman is right, that would mean the St. Louis trade was for 500k. Also, assuming all the reported bonuses are correct so far, the Sox have $847,000 left to spend. Note that we don't have bonus numbers for Angel Sosa, Nixon Munoz, Brandon Rincones, Marco Cardoso, and Nelson Teran, so those signings would eat into the 847k figure. Sox could also trade for an extra $312,500 to get them to the max amount allowed.

Hmm...thats an odd article in that Heyman is trying to make the case that the Red Sox and Yankees could be battling for Otani because of their extra pool money. It wouldn't have been very difficult for Heyman to calculate that we're committed to over 7M in bonuses already and that we'd have well under 1M to offer Otani. I imagine the Yankees have also committed the majority of their bonus pool as well.

Wow, okay the Yanks clearly have some international target(s) in mind. I still doubt its Otani though...

As has been pointed out in the International Thread this article makes absolutely no sense, at least from the Red Sox standpoint. The Red Sox have already committed 7 of their 8 million dollar allotment and Otani isn't signing for 1 million. The Yanks probably have a bunch of theirs committed too. Doubt Otani is going to the Red Sox for less than a million. Although Otani is the kind of talent you would take penalties for.

Unless there is a loophole in the latest CBA that hasn't been reported, I think it is extremely unlikely that Otani will come to the MLB before he is 25. If he did come earlier under the hard cap he would be passing up hundreds of millions of dollars available to him as a free agent. In this case the new CBA, negotiated by owners trying to keep down salary costs and established players looking out for themselves, has lowered MLB revenue.

You can go over the hard cap but you'd be facing the "death penalty" under the new rules of the CBA.

On the other hand, I believe, even a million dollars is higher than he will make in Japan and, as far as I know there would be nothing illegal about his signing a two year deal with the stipulation that he'll be a free agent in two years when he's 25. I might be wrong about the second part though. Too much detail for me.
