I know the Portland game is underway but neither the box nor the MiLB.TV page are showing it.

Steve (Boston)
Keith: can you give us a floor and a ceiling on the two new pitching additions to the Sox system: Edwin Escobar, and Eduardo Rodriguez? Thank you.
Klaw (1:18 PM)
Escobar's probably a reliever, slight chance at a back-end starter, real ordinary stuff without a good third pitch. Rodriguez could be a 2, a well above avg starter - up to 97, sits 92-93, projects to have a plus change and avg breaking ball.

3-2 Acron, they scored the 3rd run without getting a ball out of the infield. KDLC's HR was smoked. Almanzar putting nice swings on the ball. Blair sure doesn't look like somebody that was once a middle infielder. Diaz looking good, the called balls aren't missing by much. Good FB, change. Breaking stuff needs work. He works at a decent pace and is pretty pitch efficient.
Portland just had a second runner cut down at the plate. Credit the defense.
Almanzar's third AB, not so good. Badly fooled on a low changeup to bring the count to 1-2 then took a defensive swing and grounded a low outside breaking pitch to second. Could have had a hitter's count.
Pitching change, Dogs down 4-2 and Akron has the bases loaded with 2 outs. The run scored on an excuse me flair to center. Last batter was a 4 pitch walk after Diaz had a strikeout/wild pitch advance to first. Akron must have at least 5 bunts for hits or sacs today. Boscan in and got out of the jam.

Blair just got robbed of a likely double, nice leaping catch by the right fielder. He has a hit in every game at Portland. I didn't see it but Antonelis said the triple was a line drive off the center field wall. KDLC is hot right now. 2/3 and the out was a opp. field hard hit ball that the LF also made a nice play on.
Boscan hasn't looked good recently.
Strange game. Bunts all over the place, 2 runners struck out and advanced to first. Three runners thrown out at home on contact plays.

That trade will look even better when we re-sign Andrew Miller this winter.

Shaw with a 3RHR well hit down the RF line. 3-0 in the third. Barnes looking good, throwing strikes.
Mercedes with a good game finally. Salem won 2-1.
Second Portland game, Haley scattered a bunch of hits and walks but SeaDogs swept 0-1 final.

Barnes strong through 5 IP. 5 H, 0 BB, 3 K. Also, only 62 pitches through 5 IP.

Barnes gave up a run in the sixth but only one decently hit ball.
Jose Constanza singles on a line drive to center fielder Derrik Gibson. Todd Cunningham singles on a bunt ground ball to pitcher Matt Barnes. Jose Constanza to 2nd. With Christian Bethancourt batting, Jose Constanza steals (27) 3rd base. Todd Cunningham steals (14) 2nd base. Christian Bethancourt lines out to first baseman Travis Shaw. Joey Terdoslavich grounds out softly, first baseman Travis Shaw to pitcher Matt Barnes. Jose Constanza scores. Todd Cunningham to 3rd. Sean Kazmar grounds out, third baseman Garin Cecchini to first baseman Travis Shaw.
Lavarnway got the rare start.
Bad call against the PawSox. Henry overslid 3B but they missed the tag.
Mookie 2/4 batting ave up to .341.
Braves announcer after the ejections (Boles,Henry) "and of course some umpires are jerks". It was the 1st base ump that ejected them not the 3rd base ump who they were arguing with.
Lavarnway's CS was a gift. Ball in dirt bounced away but not far enough that the runner should have tried to advance.

I was looking at Mookie's stats today. I noticed his OPS got higher at each level. NYPL to SAL to Carolina to Portland. He's got some work to get his AAA over AA. But, I wouldn't discount it. I wonder how many elite prospects actually get better after a promotion.

Barnes still rolling 90 pitches/62 strikes thru 7. His fastball tails in armside and he's locating it nicely. Cecchini hammered his double to center. Good to see the above two names in the same post. That trade will look even better when we re-sign Andrew Miller this winter. And the Peavy trade will look good when Hembree and Miller are setting up Koji. Greenville 0-0 8th. Nice outing by Buttrey. Each team has 4 hits, Margot has one of them. Villarreal on to finish it. Barnes with 102 pitches/69 strikes. Looked sharp. Done deal 5-1 PawSox.

So is there any explanation for the sudden turnaround for Barnes? It's getting to be the time when we can start to get excited about him again. Was there something that he fixed or something that clicked?

Seems to me more like something clicked, mainly FB location.
I was hoping to see Bethencourt catching for the Braves but he DHed.
Greenville lost 4-0. Miles Smith gave up a 4 spot in the 8th.

It's easy to say this when he's finally turning it around... but I was really surprised at how quickly people piled off of Cecchini's bandwagon. Bad years happen all the time. The lack of power is still a real concern (though he's been driving the ball lately - a great sign) but this kid didn't just forget how to hit.

Barnes had a pretty strong streak for a while earlier in the year. There may not be any epiphany other than his curve being better at times.

MLB: Bogaerts International: Betts Owens Escobar Swihart Cecchini Eastern: Rodriguez Carolina: Margot Vinicio Kukuk South Atlantic: Rijo New York-Penn: Martinez Longhi Monge Romero Hudson Gulf Coast: Devers Basabe Dominican: Miranda So that's 19 players in top-20 age-advanced at 7 levels, out of 140 top-20 places possible at those levels, or almost 1/7 of all positions. I wonder where the Sox would rank in this? Has to be somewhere at or close to the top, because those top-20 spots get used up fast. And then the next question would be, how much of the Sox's high age-advancement position is due to having a large group of good young prospects per se, and how much is due to the organization's aggressiveness in prospect placement relative to other organizations?
