I still need to train myself to look for Rodriguez's name in the list of projected pitchers.
Also, what a day. Literally everybody on that list is somewhere between 'very intriguing' and 'legit prospect'. Do we know anything at all about Daniel Gonzalez of the DSL? He's been killing the league for two years now. I have no idea if I should be paying attention to that.

Regarding recent gameday thread conversation on Barnes: PawSox pitching coach Rich Sauveur, in this episode of Minor Details, explained that Barnes has been working to remain compact in his delivery, rather than “getting really long and tilting his back,” in an effort to keep his arm in a higher slot with better direction to the plate. Those efforts have been paying off in recent outings for the 2011 first-rounder, with the results to show the improvement. . . . Right-hander Luis Diaz had his third straight outing of four or more runs allowed, permitting that number in 5 2/3 innings. He has now given up 13 runs in his last three starts spanning 16 innings, a run in which he’s had nine and seven days off between starts, at a time when he’s blown past previous career innings highs. He is up to 128 1/3 innings this year after not ever throwing more than 101 innings in a season. . . . Right-hander Simon Mercedes tossed six shutout innings, allowing four hits (all singles), walking two, punching out three and recording eight groundball outs. The six innings matched a season-high for the 22-year-old, who has been a groundball machine this year, with 52.2 percent of balls put in play against him having been on the ground (according to MLBfarm.com). The combination of that groundball rate with his 7.5 strikeouts per nine innings and mix of mid-90s velocity with a changeup and curveball suggest that Mercedes has prospect status that exceeds his 3-9 record and 4.64 ERAfullcount.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/2014/08/15/red-sox-minor-league-roundup-manuel-margot-checks-all-boxes-on-way-to-salem-promotion-matt-barnes-landmark-simon-mercedes-stays-grounded/

Also, interesting little fact in that Speier roundup post linked above:
With Mookie's surprising power, can we call both of those guys five-tool prospects? Margot's a classic CF five tool prospect at this point, I think.

I guess, but being a "five-tool prospect" is kind of overrated since the tools aren't equally important. But yes, Margot's power has been very much a pleasant surprise. He seems to be generating that power with quick wrist action rather than overswinging, so I think it's cool to start getting excited about him.

Eh, I don't think Margot's arm is really a plus tool for him (I don't think Mookie's is, either, but that's more up for dispute). But the arm is clearly the least important of the five tools, anyways, and they both appear to have plus plate discipline, which is not a tool but probably should be.

Yeah, totally agree with that ... to me, they ranks sorta like: HIT ... Power, defense ............. speed .......................................... arm strength. Whether Margot and Betts qualify is more of a throw-away, Gameday post on my part. My real point is that Margot's worth hyping a little bit at this point as a guy with possibly an elite package for a prospect. (And, fwiw, Speier calls his arm "strong," so there ya go)

I think a plus arm is not as important as having 'not a terrible arm'. Nava made it work last night ok, and I figure Betts/Margot are at least at that arm strength.
This is now the second straight year Barnes has had a GREAT second half after a meh first half. 4.5 vs 2.5 era last year (approx).

Ball's ERA now lower than Kukuk's. Not a good year for anyone with a past DUI or hunting accident in this system. Pretty much everyone else has had really good moments. Really hoping two of my picks for good year, Callahan/Mercedes have some good starts down the stretch.

Call this stupid/silly or whatever, but the last 2 teenagers to have 35+ steals and 10+ HRs with < 15K% were Mike Trout in 2010 and Chipper Jones in 1991, that's pretty impressive company to say the least, I'm incredibly excited to see how he fares with Salem.

Trout did it in AA, though, whereas Jones was much more applicable to Margot as he did it in low-A. Jones reached the majors at age 21 (two years later) but, because of injury, did not play full time in the majors until age 23. Obviously, Jones outgrew his speed in favor of power. That's unlikely to occur with Margot.

I like that you keep finding these "maybe we should be paying more attention to Margot" stat-fact blurbs. Count me all aboard the Margot hype train. Very excited to see what he can do in Salem.

I'm not all aboard on the Margot hype train, but I am keeping the station schedule in my pocket just in case.
Add: since there are a few hot names pitching and being discussed here, it's worth mentioning that a guy like Stank who has had a decent enough season fell from 15 to 30, mostly based on being jumped by new guys and the Devers/Shaw/Diaz 'just got interesting' type. Rijo fell a spot with a solid age-adv season at Greenville.

Really hoping two of my picks for good year, Callahan/Mercedes have some good starts down the stretch. Kukuk was our Pitcher of the Month for July and went five scoreless in his only August start. 31.1-21-7-6-19-41 since the start of July. Walk rate is still high, but at least he's back to striking guys out and not giving up hits.

Also, Kukuk has a 4.35 ERA if you include his time in Greenville. There's no way on earth Kukuk has had a worse or more disappointing season than Callahan or Mercedes. Callahan gets stikeouts but allows way too much hard contact. Mercedes has zero consistency from start to start. Kukuk met resistence upon his promotion, started getting wild (possibly from overthrowing, possibly from nibbling, possibly from something totally unrelated), made adjustments and has been quite good for the last six weeks.

Evan Lepler @evanlepler · 14m Manuel Margot is batting sixth and playing CF for the Salem Red Sox tonight. 19-year-old making his Carolina League debut.

I didn't catch the split level ERA for Kukuk, makes it better. The comment was more to include Britton/Denney than anything. Callahan/Mercedes have just been shockingly bad compared to what I expected/hoped this year.

Nice re tweet by Chris with regards to the 50$ fine for that bench clearing brawl.
Am pretty sure (guessing) MiLB players still play for peanuts and that 50 bucks is a ton of money for any level of those guys who go through the grinder. Am guessing again the "spread" they get fed daily before games is no luxury meal either, but something akin to what one would see at a UN handout mission.
I remember taking Pete Ladd, Richie Gedman, Danny Wepner all the "buy one get one free" coupons to burger king, mcdonalds" etc.. I got out of the newspaper. Ladd was the one with the "wheels" and would take the other to the restaurant and get the food in his van.
Those guys had to live tight and it's probably the exact same way now. 50 bucks is a huge sum for those guys.

one of the prospects mentioned that their food allowance was $25 per day. funny, I can draw 61/day depending on the location, but I don't eat 1/3 as much when I was young. Perhaps there should be a special double/triple allowance for the skinning DR kids that we want to fill out?

It was weird, though, that he repeated the league given his numbers last year.

Boston on down, so far, only 1 run allowed (Owens).
Watching Rodriguez, some ramblings: The Orioles got robbed. Almanzar, KDLC, Blair continue making some serious contact. Portland's camera angle isn't good for getting a read on Blair as a catcher but he's definitely got a bat. Several of the hits against Rodriguez were lucky. He's blowing his fastball by both lefties and righties, throws high in the zone. Most of his K's have been on fastballs. . . . LOL, Margot 2ABs, 2 K's. . Rodriguez gave up a run but he's been pitching great, even better than the box would indicate. This inning was an example, dinky single, runner advanced on a groundball that was hit too slow to get the lead runner (that's happened a lot tonight), dinky single. The earlier double on the log says linedrive to right field but it was really a soft flair liner that Heller trap caught then wasn't in a position to prevent the runner from taking two. There are other examples. His pitch count is high but mainly because of the stuff happens stuff, he's throwing strikes.
Rodriguez done 95p/64s 6IP 8H 1R 1ER 0BB 7K 5/3 GO/FO. McCarthy on in relief. Dogs up 4-1.
Didn't see it but KDLC with a HR 5-1 now. He's been hot but if he ever makes the majors he's going to need a lot of bat, he's pretty much a dinosaur.
Kukuk with a strange game, 5IP 2 H but 6BBs vs 3Ks. Margot 0-3 now but he made contact on his third AB.
Owens with a less than stellar night, only 4H and a BB over 6 but 2 of the hits were HRs. Marrero's struggles continue.
Still no SB attempts that I've seen with Blair catching so I pretty much have zero reads on his defense. He looks athletic, physically to some extent what Sean Coyle would look like if he got a height gene. Some of the EL team TV broadcasts have good angles for seeing the catcher, Portland isn't one of them. I do know that when there's a pitch in the dirt, his knees are going to the dirt and he's going to keep the ball in front of him, similar to Tek's style there.
PawSox lost 4-1. Hembree with his first appearance since his BoSox debut. Apparently his arm didn't fall off. Lavarnway and Shaw with 2 hits each. Shaw's double was their only XBH.
