Can someone remind me why Koji wasn't traded on July 31? His value was very high at the time and it's been downhill from there. So that we can get his age-40 season for $10 million? I love what Koji has done for us but next year might be the first one he gets paid more than he will be worth.

come on pedey, on July 31st, Koji looked like and EXREMELY viable option for closer next year.. Still does, frankly. One horrid outing does not a washed up pitcher make.

Still shocked by 9th inning meltdown. Koji failed to get out pitch (3rd strike) on numerous of batters. 2 bloop hits. Cespendes should have made 3rd out catch but he made no effort by running hard. Holt was force to run all way due to Yoenis's lazy running from shallow LF. Nava just made the bonehead scoop up the ball & lob the throw by not pay attention to runner that scored all way from first base. It's whole team loss. Pretty disgusted to watch. Someone (Jim Rice?) has to teach Cespendes to play real defense @ LF. It's hard to believe the team still find a way to lose the game.

Triple AAA team, and Mickey Mouse management. Bunch of college grads who read Bill James and believe they know everything. The should have started a web site on prospects. I wonder if there was any market for Koji, or did the rest of league know he was ancient history, thanks for the memories. It is not one bad outing. He has been spotty for some time now. Still, thanks for the memories. They traded away their best receiver, and now have a mish mash for a bullpen. And no way will they resign Miller. These guys are winging it without a clue

Koji is fine and should be pretty good next year too but he is a classic deadline sell. We shouldn't be building around a 40 year old and he had value. I'm fine going I to 2015 with him but Koji should have brought back more than Miller (who I hope we resign)

It's gotten to the point that I'm pretty numbed by all the losses, so Koji having his meltdown doesn't even phase me. At this point, all I care about is that 6th pick. I have faith that the Sox can accomplish this. Hope they pick wisely.
There really is no joy if/when they actually win games this season, so the losses don't even hurt a bit.
I would be concerned that Tazawa and Koji seem to be tiring out. No reason not to give them extended rests. Better than wasting them in a waste of a season. The Red Sox should have enough filler on the roster as they descend towards 90 - 95 losses.

Yoenis's lazy running" ------------------------ I think he saw Brock coming and said no way I'm going to get rocked. It was clearly his play and he's got to call Holt off. If he tries a shoestring catch he's probably got a 50/50 shot on a very difficult chance. Remy seemed to think he had no shot but it looked catchable to me.

These guys are winging it without a clue The reason this team isn't winning right now is because it is getting less than 2.0 WAR from amateur players signed (either as International Free Agents or drafted) after 2005. Conspicuously they have next to nothing to show from the 2006, 2007, 2008 or 2009 drafts. That is not Ben Cherington's fault. The Red Sox FO squeezes the Boston market for every cent of revenue it can -- and then pours it back into the team. As you can see from the link below despite having something like the 10th or 12th largest market in MLB (the Yankees, Mets, Dodgers, Angels, Phillies, Rangers, Braves, Astros and Nationals all have larger markets; the Cubs and White Sox share a market twice the size), the Red Sox are second in MLB in revenue and third in market value. But despite being second in revenue, the Red Sox do not make a greater profit than the other teams and they have posted losses over the last decade. www.forbes.com/mlb-valuations/list/Red Sox management does not get anywhere near the credit it deserves for what it does. Yes, John Henry and company demand that Red Sox fans pay more for their product than any of the other owners, but then they take that money (and frequently some of their own) and put it back in the team. And they have to. They are trapped in a division with the Yankees (who have a market over four times the size of the Boston market),the Rays (who are still reaping the benefits of having had eight top five picks and four top picks in ten years) and the Orioles (who are now reaping the benefits of having had six straight years of top five picks). By contrast, the Red Sox haven't had a top five pick since 1967. Red Sox fans want to compete with the Yankees, and this is the only way it can be done (and the margin for error isn't very large). All of this is not to suggest that the Red Sox FO is perfect or that individual moves should not be criticized. It is to suggest that the whole body of work needs to be considered, not just most recent performance. It is also intended to point out that there is a tendency (among fans and especially among the media) to overestimate the advantages the Red Sox have and to ignore the disadvantages they face. The Red Sox aren't about to finish in last place for the second time in three years because they are incompetent; they are in that position because (a) they and their fans set very high goals for the team (b) achieving those goals gives them a really small margin for error, (c) despite the fact that they are very good they are human and have made some mistakes. Note: I used Baseball Reference for WAR numbers; last night when I posted I forgot about Junichi Tazawa.

Wow, did not expect a loss like this. Koji will be fine. Let's not overreact.

How can this offense scrape together hits against king Felix, yet make that clown from the angels last night look like bob Gibson?

Nava's play in right field was awful, he lobbed the ball like this was a adult softball game? Ackley scored all the way from 1st on a single. what a joke!!!

Think about Koji for a minute.
For the past 5 seasons, the man has been virtually impossible to score against, except by hitting the ball out of the park. Now he's had outings where he's given up a run on two hits and then an actual 5 run inning constructed on a series of hits and a walk (which was the catalyst for the entire inning, by the way. Koji probably ran out of gas after that 10-pitch walk.) I'm sure that this level of scoring off him has to have been unprecedented over the past 5 years.
It may be that he is starting to run on fumes. If he is, rather than criticizing him or agonizing over his not being traded, I'd rather celebrate and remember a 5-year run of dominance that rivals, and actually probably surpasses, any other bullpen dominance in the history of the game (Eck and Rivera for their peak 5-year stretches are probably the closest to Koji.)

Looked like Holt's "hustle" going after that dinky fly block off Cespedes. Hope they go after Miller strong in the off season. They not only got rid of their ace starter but probably their most dominate relief pitcher. Layne has done well, but he seems to be a specialist and one who probbaly should be used for just that. They will have to develop a new relief corp, and Miller could be a key piece. I really doubt they will go hard after Lester. Ben was not spinning when he said there were other ways to win ( or be competitive) than having a Lester.

Hopefully Bogaerts gets more than a day off. He needs time off and the hit to the head might be the perfect excuse to make it happen.

I knew Cespedes could run well, but he just kicked it into a higher gear I hadn't seen before.

Workman just lost it. He is looking more and more like a long man, spot starter.
Ross looks old.

We may be seeing Workman's last start of the season. His FB is getting demolished.
He can still be good moving forward, as the swing man out of the pen and spot starter, but this starting every 5 days is not working
