Does Salem still have a shot at the playoffs?
ADD: I looked this up, and indeed they are up two games on the third place division team for a spot in the playoffs. They are also up 3.5 on the 4th place mudcats. Further, they are 1 game out of 1st for the second half, which is relevant in that they'll only host a playoff game if they win this second half.
ADD2: it's a little disappointing that the different A+ leagues don't have a championship tournament between their best clubs, even if it were a one game playoff.

Even with Portland in the playoffs, how much does it really mean/matter? This is not the same club it was a couple of months ago. A lot of the core, prime talent has been promoted.

Well, I was discussing Salem, which has become an interesting club the last few weeks with the promotions of Asuaje, Weems and Margot, plus the arms who were already there. I was kind of hoping Rijo might join them for the playoff push.
You're not wrong about Portland, but there are still several guys of interest including Blair, Almanzar, Dent, de la Cruz, Diaz, Rodriguez, Couch and Johnson, plus Ramos and Coyle if they could get healthy.

Don't forget that Blair, Dent (org guy), Diaz & Johnson (add Haley) all came to Portland from Salem, they haven't disappointed in player development although it was clearly a weak link in the chain.

It was worth the wait for Speier. Imagine the arms next season that are rehabbing this year.
You can say what you want about our outfield prospects and power prospects but the Sox are doing pretty good with the pitching.

I'm not sure who you're referring to, but Josh Pennington from this years draft class seems like a comparable case to Speier.

Josh Norris ?@jnorris427 1m Pat Light touched 98 in the first. He also hung a slider that Courtney Hawkins hit to Mars.
Josh Norris ?@jnorris427 7m Manuel Margot swung so hard his helmet flew off. Never seen that.

WOW tweet: Josh Norris ?@jnorris427 1m Pat Light touched 98 in the first. He also hung a slider that Courtney Hawkins hit to Mars. We knew Light could throw hard, but he probably profiles as a reliever unless he develops his secondary offerings.

There's a difference. Hopefully Norris will tweet enough during the game to get some sort of feel. LOL, glad somebody noticed that. Haha, was the real reason for the WOW comment originally.

Josh agrees: Josh Norris ?@jnorris427 57s Prime example of why pitching is more than a velo on a gun. Light is up to 98 and getting tattooed. . . . <----------- Don't overlook staff tweets from the PawSox game. . . . For those not watching, Angel's pitcher Garrett Richards with a major looking injury to his knee. I hadn't noticed that Jordan Procyshen was in Greenville but I see SoxProspects has from the team page. He's in the lineup tonight. Travis 2/2 2B, HR. Opponents against PawSox and Drive have 1 hit between them. Unknown why but Lavarnway replaced by Butler mid game. . . This sux, I was hoping to get a speed read on Margot who he's there to see: Josh Norris ?@jnorris427 5m Radar gun battery dies in first, stopwatch breaks. It's been an interesting day. . . From the log: Manuel Margot singles on a line drive to center fielder Adam Engel. Mario Martinez to 3rd. Manuel Margot out at 2nd, center fielder Adam Engel to shortstop Cleuluis Rondon Miles Smith just gave up his first hit in the 4th. He has 6Ks. Smith and Barnes still have 1 hit shutouts going with excellent K's. Haley's shutout string is over but thru 6 he has 7K's and a 10-0 GO/FO ratio.

Unknown why but Lavarnway replaced by Butler mid game. Maybe Butler was just late getting there? No, I saw a tweet that had him there before the game. Tim Britton ?@timbritton 3m Matt Barnes is done in Pawtucket after 6.1IP. Allowed two hits and no runs, struck out seven and walked three. 16 whiffs, 14 on fastballs PawSox ?@pawsox 10m Matt Barnes lifted in the 7th to a huge ovation from McCoy fans - 6.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 7 SO is responsible for two runners on. Up 9-0 Box shows 6.1

Is it strange that I'm somewhat relieved JBJ is struggling in AAA? It just confirms that his struggles this year aren't a matter of him simply not being able to hit major league pitching, but rather some other issue (mechanical?) that can hopefully be tweaked.

Whitson, Ryan Harris, there's a couple more that are injured or coming off injuries and next year they will be one more year healthier. Did you follow the draft this year? Gunn, Beeks , Thats off the top of my head.

Good point on JBJ. Marrero broke up an 0/21 slump. Has a single and two walks. Pat Light's night: 4.1IP 12H 5R 5ER 0BB 3K 1HRA Norris has stopped tweeting about game stuff, all of his recent tweets have been about Winston-Salem between innings activities. I'm guessing there will be a Margot report soon at BA. Miles Smith done: 5.2IP 2H 2R 0ER 3BB 8K 0HRA 5.53ERA 97P/57S 3GO/4FO Haley's night: 6.1IP 7H 3R 3ER 2BB 8K 1HRA 95p/63s 10GO/zeroFO Tim Britton ?@timbritton 51s 0-for-5 with three strikeouts for Bradley. Not the best ABs. Josh Norris ?@jnorris427 6m Carlos Asuaje: Does not get cheated. Against Jose Bautista: Does not make contact. Mike Antonellis ?@seadogsradio 14m Blair has homered again, same spot as last night…towering blast over everything in left-center field. PawSox ?@pawsox 9m Anthony Ranaudo (6 IP last night) and Matt Barnes (6.1 IP tonight) pitch PawSox to shutout victories over Lehigh Valley, 7-0 & 9-0 at McCoy. Nick Hamelin ?@nickhamelinmlb 36m All-Star Jordan Betts ropes a double down the 3B line to put the lowellspinners within 1. CT leads 4-3 with 1 out in the bottom of the 7th. Matt Huegel ?@matthuegelsp 16s Boles says that Lavaranway "got his bell rung" which is why he exited in fourth. Feeling better after game. Portland won 5-3. wasMike Stanton Carson Blair 2/4 2B, HR. Now batting .313 with power. Jen McCaffrey ?@jcmccaffrey 4m PawSox have Red Sox game on in the clubhouse. Garin Cecchini after Betts' catch, 'Look at that boy Mookie doing it in the Show'.
