hoping it's Ramos (which would certainly require improved health) and Castillo plays in one of the Winter Leagues.

Alex Speier ?@alexspeier Red Sox also have roster spot for TBD outfielder in AFL. While there are multiple candidates in system, Rusney Castillo a candidate. Castillo is eligible for the AFL, since he established residency in Haiti and not in DR or Mexico. Probably took Brentz's spot.

In other words, except for Marrero, it's the Rule 5 audition. Is Coyle in danger of being left unprotected for the Rule 5 draft? I had kind of assumed he was a solid bet to be added to the 40 man

Based on Farrell's comments today about wanting Castillo to get game reps in a fall or winter league, and the fact that the Red Sox have a TBD outfield spot, it seems likely that he'll play for them in the AFL.

Wouldn't it be better for him to play winter ball? AZ Instructional League seems more geared toward refining skills for up and coming prospects or showcasing potential Rule 5 candidates. A full winter league schedule would give Rusney more ABs in age comparable competition.

And while AFL competition is less refined than the winter leagues, I'm not sure it's really any worse in quality. But, fair point-- having him play in the Dominican could work as well. PS: moved a bunch of off-topic posts to the throwdown subforum.

If you are a resident of a country with a winter league (Mexico, Venezuela, Dominican, Puerto Rico), you are not eligible for the AFL and must play in your country's winter league instead. Because Castillo did not establish residency in one of those countries, he is eligible to play in the AFL. And because you don't have to be a resident of a country to play in its winter league, he's also eligible to play in the P.R. this winter.

The former is an instructional league for young players under control of teams who have their spring training sites in Arizona. The AFL is a league where advanced prospects (there is a limit on the number of players who have not played at AA or higher). The AFL is just as competitive as any winter league.

For Red Sox purposes, the Fall Instructional League is in Florida at the complexes.
And I think his point was AFL versus winter ball, a choice that we've since seen needn't be made.
Also, I would not say the AFL is just as competitive as winter ball. Two very different atmospheres.

The AFL generally features more top-to-bottom talent than the winter leagues, but features less polished players (this is especially true on the pitching side, where many top-tier pitching prospects have hit their innings limits and aren't sent to the AFL). The winter leagues feature more uneven talent (a lot of rosters are filled out with really fringy guys), but also features a good number of polished MLB veteran-types. The winter leagues are also just more competitive in the sense that managers and players play to win, as opposed to the more exhibition-league feel of the AFL. Christian Vazquez mentions some of these differences in that link I posted above.

Fans may not be toting guns to games or harassing players who do not play well in the AFL as is often the case in winter leagues, but the talent level is high and everyone is playing hard to make a good impression. The main difference in "atmosphere" is the nearly empty stands at many games in the AFL. That does not mean that the AFL is not highly competitive. FYI, I watch 6-8 games each Fall League season.

The pitching in the AFL is typically not all that great, fwiw.

Not that it is a surprise or anything but Rusney has been added to the AFL roster.

No Red Sox participated in yesterday's Saguaro's loss to Peoria. Perhaps the manager is grouping the affiliations together on the game rosters.

No Red Sox participated in yesterday's Saguaro's loss to Peoria. Perhaps the manager is grouping the affiliations together on the game rosters. This tends to be more or less what happens. Gets looser as the season goes along, but there tends to be a Lineup A and Lineup B (no connotation meant by the letters), and they will group guys on teams together sometimes. Cecchini and Betts tended to play on the same day last year, for example.
