Had missed that he was in the AFL, but a BP report this week on old friend Nefi Ogando (traded for John McDonald) has him pumping 97-98 out of the bullpen with a two-plane slider that flashed plus, giving him a shot at cracking the Phillies' bullpen next season. www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=24969

Mike Miller has been assigned to the AFL as Castillo's replacement.

Soooooo Sean Coyle's been brutal. Now down to .164/.281/.236 with 20 K's in 55 at-bats.
Might they try to sneak him through Rule 5? Would he stick on a major league roster right now?
I'm trying not to let the SSS dictate my thinking. Someone talk me out of this.

Second basemen with pop are few and far between right now. I'd think a team like Colorado nabs him if the Sox try to sneak him through. And if the drafting team really likes him an is really committed to rebuilding, they could probably keep him on the roster all year.
That said, he has probably fallen a tick below Shaw, if the choice came down to one of the two. Strikeouts were a serious problem for Coyle all year, and I don't think he could hit .200 in the majors right now. I think Shaw could stick (particularly an NL team) as a lefty bat off the bench, especially if that team thinks he can handle third base and the outfield adequately enough.

He'd be easy to sneak onto a bench as utility infielder. And if his trajectory looks anything like his time in the minors, at some point he starts rocketing doubles around ML ballparks, and launching HRs over a few fences. I think there's a better than 50-50 chance he'd be picked up. Billy Beane, are you listening?

I'd let Shaw go before Coyle. Are we really ever going to have Shaw on our roster as a first base option for more than a few games? I don't think so.
Edit: Is it just me or does Coyle try to hit every ball out of the park? I mean I haven't seen him play that much but my impression is that this guy needs to cut down on his swing some with 2 strikes or he doesn't have a prayer of being the player he could become. Can he hit to RF at all?

It's the end of a long season, and Coyle is the kind of player an NL team could easily hide on it's bench (he plays 2b/3b and you could probably teach him corner outfield). I don't take the chance.
