IIRC, guys have to be in AA or above by August 1 to qualify, although each team gets to place at least one lower tiered guy, plus there are often other fill-ins from lower in the org.
Red Sox famhands will play on the Surprise with the Mariners, Padres, Rangers and Reds.
I'd suspect that Almanzar, Coyle and Ramos would be chosen if healthy, as each has missed a chunk of time this Summer. Blair and Brentz could also get consideration.
From the pitching side, Keith Couch, Eduardo Rodriguez and maybe Justin Haley could each afford to get additional innings, as could William Cuevas and Joe Gunkel. They could look to push a guy like Pat Light, and they'll probably throw in a Boscan or Kurcz type.
ADD: I coulda sworn there was already a thread on this, but couldn't find it. Feel free to merge.

It was discussed in the July 12 minor league gameday thread. Amfox and others. Any ideas or predictions on who goes to the fall league for us? Seems Brentz could make up some ABs. My quick guesses (year in parentheses, if they have previously played in the AFL): Bryce Brentz (2012) John Ely (??) Joe Gunkel (NA) (sub-AA pick) Two of Michael Almanzar (2012), Derrik Gibson (2013), Sean Coyle (NA) and David Chester (NA) Two of Noe Ramirez (2013), Robby Scott (NA) and Aaron Kurcz (NA) Yeah if Brentz is healthy, seems like a no-brainer. Coyle and Almanzar too. And Kurcz probably. Gibson makes sense too if Brentz can't go. I don't think they'd send Gunkel I in his first full season. Have they ever done that with a pitcher? Don't they usually send a catcher? Would think Swihart might be the guy. Finishing school a la Cecchini and Betts last year. If not him, then Blair has missed some time, but he's getting way more reps than he ever has already. I have a feeling Augliera will go or something. The Double-A relievers make sense. What about Hinojosa maybe Swihart makes sense; he was an oversight on my part. I suppose it is possible that Blair makes the leap to the AFL this year as the sub-AA guy. As to Gunkel, my thought was that most of the Portland starters currently have a lot of innings, while Gunkel has less "tread" this year because he started as a reliever. I think Augliera will be maxed out on innings by September (and I think he's hitting his ceiling now, IMO). Couch would be a possibility to repeat the AFL, depending on how long he's out, but the AFL would be a good challenge for Gunk. I don't believe that Hinojosa is eligible, as the last information I saw stated he is a resident of the Dominican Republic. Yeah, I definitely see where you're coming from on Gunkel. My thought on Gunkel was that he's at 71.2 right now. Say he gets another 20 this month (he's got 4 more starts probably), 25 in August/September (I'm spitballing - tell me if this is off). He'll be at 117 innings. Last year he threw just 98.1. Would they want to jump him that much more? Maybe they would. Maybe send him for half the time, then replace him with McCarthy, or the top guy from Instructs? My bad on Hinojosa. They wouldn't send Mike Miller, would they?

Two other players to consider are Margot and Marrero. Betts was there last season and Margot seems to be on a similar track. Marrero needs something, but I don't know if this is the right venue.

Margot is not eligible (one foreign player is allowed, as long as the player does not reside in a country that participates in winter ball, as part of the Caribbean Confederation or the Australian winter league). Ramos also is not eligible.
My off-the-cuff updated thoughts would be:
Brentz, Almanzar, Coyle, Blair (sub-AA pick), Couch, Ely and two of Scott/Kurcz/Ramirez
I'd be more inclined to rest Marrero and Swihart, as they have had complete seasons, whereas the four position players listed above could use more PAs.

I'd expect Almanzar would be there in a trade-showcase capacity, in order to ease the roster crunch we're facing and mitigate Rule 5 for him.

Not eligible, assuming he still resides in the Dominican Republic.

Like to see Light go if his conversion to reliever is started there. Coyle needs to go. Kurcz, Couch. Think Brentz could use the AB's either there or at Winter ball.

Chris, I believe they will not send gunkel to the AFL due to his innings, also only being his first full season. However I do agree that they could send him to make up for lost time as coming up as a reliever. He has not so much struggled at the high A level, as much as not gotten any run support and many errors. Last evening was really his first rough game (6 EArned runs)

However I'm pretty sure he (and Gibson) are both eligible for Minor League Free Agency this fall (their SP profiles indicate this as well). Aren't they able to declare themselves as MLFAs once the MLB regular season ends? Are your projections assuming the Sox will re-sign them and then send them to the AFL, or am I wrong about their MLFA eligibility and/or the timing window for them to hit the market?

Is it possible Castillo is a candidate given how long it's been since he played in real games? Do vets ever go the AFL (realizing he's not a typical "vet")?

His eligibility would depend where he currently resides.

So, it's probably more likely he gets some playing time in a Winter league.

So, it's probably more likely he gets some playing time in a Winter league. Yes, even if he's eligible for the AFL. Have him play with major leaguers in a Spanish-speaking environment, rather than minor leaguers in Arizona.

Pretty much agree, but Blair has also seen a huge jump in playing time this year - he's going to approach his combined totals from 2012-2013 in games and at-bats. I think there's a decent chance they send Swihart instead. Could go either way. I'd note, though, that Rodriguez pitched 145 innings last year and is only at 107 for this year. Brayan Villarreal could also be a candidate given how much time he missed. Dammit they're both from Venezuela. NVM

According to Rule 55 of the Major League Rules (can be found on the Wiki) players become MLFA's on October 15 or five days after the World Series ends - whichever is later. The World Series is tentatively slated to begin on October 22, so clearly the date will be determined by the World Series. Last year, the MLFA date was November 5. The AFL begins on October 7, so the Sox will have 3-4 weeks to make their decision.

I can't remember who, but I'm fairly certain the Sox have sent potential MLFA's to Arizona before. I'll try to figure out who.Meh, I got nothin'. Guess not.

MLFAs are not eligible.
They need to re-sign first, which is possible. But AFL assignment following re-signing is historically unlikely.
I think the last time it happened was in 2007 with Lincoln Holdzkom, and the team subsequently lost him in the Rule 5.

In other words, except for Marrero, it's the Rule 5 audition.

Alex Speier ?@alexspeier Red Sox also have roster spot for TBD outfielder in AFL. While there are multiple candidates in system, Rusney Castillo a candidate.

Tickled to see Kurcz get a chance to compete there, especially with him missing time during the regular season. How many were surprised to see Younginer get a chance? Was a great pick, I thought when drafted, especially as a consolation sign for the non sign on Brandon Kline that year. Shame he never put it together.
