I blame Farrell. No way do you bring in your closer who has been struggling with the bases loaded. Oh stop. Farrell can be criticized for plenty of things, but bringing Uehara in to close out this game isn't one of them. Also, this isn't because of that particular play but it just happened to remind me of it: Cespedes's defense has really been less than I had hoped. I had it in my head that he was a solid defender who overcame the occasional mistake with athleticism and a rocket arm. Well, the mistakes don't look very occasional. He looks like he screws up pretty often actually. I'm hoping it's just a string of bad luck rather than an indication of who he is. He doesn't make hussle plays, Cespedes has a good arm and thats it. I don't think it's about effort. It looks like he tries out there. I just don't think he's very good at playing the outfield.

Breslow has a save, I guess that makes him a good pitcher now?

What we need now is for Toronto to try to steal 2B to get the tying run in scoring position.
Edit: Woops, Breslow finds a way to get the last out.

Whew. Good to see them finally win. Should have done that from last Fri game with 3-0 leading in 9th inning.

I just want to see the Sox win 6 more games.
I've been following the team since 1957. I've never seen the franchise win 100 regular-season games, and I'd like to see that happen once before I croak. But I've never seen them lose 100 either, and if I'm not going to see them win 100, I don't want to see them lose 100.

I just want to see the Sox win 6 more games. As it happens 6 is the number of games we have left against the Yankees this year.

I'm close to that length of time as a fan and had been thinking for YEARS that the '78 squad had won 102 games.. your post just intrigued me enough to go look and wow.. They *just* won 99G. Hope they don't lose 100, though I just looked and that '65 squad did. Remembered the early Yaz/Petrocelli/Tony C and pre Boomer, Mike Andrews, Lonny etc teams were pretty awful.

lol people are still freaking out over losses...every loss is a good thing for the future of this franchise. Seconded. Honestly, who cares if the Sox win ballgames at this point? They're going to finish dead last anyways. They're not going to go 20-2 to reach .500, so what difference does it make? Might as well pick as high up in the draft as possible. I'm hoping for 4th in the draft, although 6th is more likely. I mean, if the Red Sox win, what thrill is there in it? And if they lose, why should there be much more than a shrug? A loss hurts a lot more when the game actually means something and there's something substantial at stake. And conversely, the wins are sweeter when something is at stake. All that's going on here is an audition for 2015 and throwing pitchers against the wall and seeing what sticks. The actual wins and losses are meaningless at this point, which is a darn shame, but it is what it is.

Whoops again -- I had purged the record of the '65 club from my mind [probably had to do with my transition from HS to college that year]. Sort of the antithesis to your thinking about the '78 club. Well. Now that the Sox DID actually lose 100 games in my lifetime, that just makes me more interested in seeing them win 100 some year.

This is a topic I have had an interest in for a while: why has a team that has won 90 games so frequently failed to win 100?
My theory is that it is because they frequently trade prospects for veterans but rarely trade veterans for prospects. In trading prospects for veterans you simultaneously increase your minimum number of wins while decreasing your maximum number of wins (lowered risk for lower ceiling).
I think the Red Sox approach is better for revenue, even if it can be disappointing at times to die hard fans who would prefer to see them take the higher risk, higher reward approach.

So the Sox are gonna do a QO to Koji? Put a 14 million dollar offer for someone turning 41? Who is the closer of the future in the minors? Who is being groomed for that? I don't think Andrew Miller is a closer.
I wonder who they feel could close. That's why it's good to have a lot of talented arms. Not everyone can be a starter. Alex Wilson has been very good and he was buried in AAA. Drake Britton has been better lately. This offseason is gonna be fun and very critical to the Sox future.

Guys, Koji is 39 this year. He'll be 40 next year.
(And by the way, "closer of the future" is not something you should be grooming people for in the minors.)

trivia question of the day is not: "who is the sox emergency catcher?" it is: "who is next on the depth chart at SS?"
if Rivero goes on the DL, who gets purchased? Ryan "Bleeping" Dent?

Everything is constantly changing. You have a ton of arms and only so many spots. It's very important. I was off one year on his date of birth. To me it seems cost effective to have a kid who is fearless close for you. They knew right away Papelbon was a closer. They tried starting but right away they had him close and it was very cost effective. The Phillies got stuck with the contract.

The 2014 Red Sox is actually much worst than the 2012 Red Sox with Bobby Valentine.
Aug 26, 2012: 61 W, 67 L (4th place), 632 Run scored, 603 Run allowed Aug 26, 2014: 57 W, 74 L (Last place), 499 Run scored, 572 Run allowed

He isn't forcing there hand nor is there is real need to start his clock.
