The IL pitcher of the year is now also the IL leader in ERA and he has enough innings to qualify for the entire year. He has a half run lead over the next active IL pitcher.
The likely EL pitcher of the year also leads the EL in ERA and pitches tonight. He has a run and a half lead over the next active EL pitcher.

Looks like GCL STL is going to clinch a home seed. They put a 14-spot on GCL WAS in the 1st inning today. WAS' starter faced ten batters and did not record an out.
BOS and BAL are tied at 2, mid 3rd. A win will clinch the #3 seed.

Scott Lauber ?@scottlauber 6m #RedSox announce Ranaudo to start vs. Rays tomorrow night
DieselSox playoff no-no. Pretty cool.
GicleSox up 8-5 bottom of the 8th. Interesting line for Basabe, 2AB, 2R, 2H, 2 2B, 2BB and unfortunately 1 RBI.
EDIT: He just wrecked it, 3ABs. Perfect would have been a sac fly.
LOL, Benjamin Moore PH for Simon Gravel.
Sox won 8-5. Playoffs tomorrow.

Kemp has been hitting well this month. He's raw but he's got a high ceiling for sure.

The MFY have two teams each in GCL and DSL. We have one. How much of an advantage is that, if any?

Joe Oliver just went postal in Lowell before the 1st pitch tonight. He got into it with 1st base umpire before the first pitch and got tossed. He threw bats balls and anything he could get his hands on the field. He must have resevations at Strega at 8?

Johnson a little less pitch efficient last two innings but still dealing. Thru 5 69/47 2H 10GO/1FO 1K 0BB. Still 1-0.
Ruiz in relief, announcers speculating it's to get ready for the playoffs.

Just saw a tweet that he has allowed 12 hits in his last 40.1 I Well sure but he doesn't have a twitter account. How ya going to advance without a twitter account ? Ruiz just gave up a run so no win for Johnson which proves something. Owens has 14 EL wins,Johnson 10. Ask Cy Young, wins are the most important stat for deciding best pitcher. Other Johnson stuff: Another tweet said his ERA previous seven games was 0.74 His EL ERA is now 1.75 All year long, he's only allowed more than 2 runs earned or unearned in a start once (7 earned in 2.1 on July 7). That's consistency.

Portland Sea Dogs ?@portlandseadogs 34m Pete Ruiz now pitching, he was activated from the TIA before the game…Luis Diaz on the DL.
I'm guessing innings for Diaz but that's just a guess.

Also, Johnson with 113 IP in 2013, now 144 so far in 2014. Pushing the innings advancement envelope according to the theorists of a few years ago. Which reminds me, I really haven't heard much the last couple of years about the "no more than 30-35 innings more than the previous year for pitchers < 25. Is that still a viable approach, or have teams gotten away from that some?

I think teams are smart enough to not believe in the "Verducci effect"
If it was up to me, I'd monitor velocity as much as anything. It's probably about as good a measure of accumulated wear and tear as anything, short of getting serial MRIs or something. I assume pitching coaches are watching the pitchers pretty closely to see if fatigue is causing mechanics to get out of whack.
If Johnson was becoming less effective, losing control, and delivery was altered, that's a much better reason to shut him down that an IP limit. If anything, rather than shut him down, just limit pitches per start maybe?

With Johnson, I'm guessing it is a combination of all of above and even though he isn't showing signs of fatigue that they will limit innings and pitches for the rest of the regular season. Diaz was put on the DL today and I'm guessing with him, that there are signs of fatigue. The Dogs have enough converted starter bullpen depth to handle it easily.
Portland lost 3-1. KDLC 3/4 2B, the only Dogs XBH.
PawSox won 8-5 Britton pitched and didn't lose JBJ 2/5 BB Henry 3/5 Cecchini 2/4 BB Swihart 2/5 2B, the PawSox only XBH
Salem lost 10-3 Kukuk with a bad one
Drive lost 10-0 Callahan didn't get out of the first
Lowell won 13-1 Obviously fired up pre-game. 7 Spinner batters with crooked number hits Drehoff with another outstanding start.

Something I don't know, I've always viewed Johnson's 4th pitch as a slider but here they are calling it a cut fastball:
Kevin Thomas ?@clearthebases 1h According to stat man Aidan Thomas, Johnson threw 35 fastballs, 14 curves (10 strikes), 14 change-ups and six cut fastballs.
Either way, typical nice mix for Johnson.

Kemp has been hitting well this month. He's raw but he's got a high ceiling for sure. .183 / .256 / .268 (77 PA) on August 4 .286 / .386 / .510 (57 PA) since. If he's simply streaky, then you wouldn't discount the former all that much. But it seems likelier that he figured something out and is on his way to something interesting.

Oh, and Chavis, after hitting .125 / .234 / .196 in July, is up to .372 / .430 / .590 for August. This was certainly my favorite GCL team to watch over the last 5 years. Lots of intriguing players to follow. We have a gap talent wise further up, but we have some really nice talent coming up with this season's GCL and DSL teams. Looks like we are top heavy and bottom heavy and really thin around the waist.
