Jon, the Nationals won the GCL championship over the Red Sox last year.
The GCL Red Sox won their only GCL championship in 2006. They lost in the finals in 2012 (PIT) and 2013 (WAS).

That WAS team was an all-time stacked team, if I remember right. This year WAS's NYPL team (Auburn) is 33-40 on the year, but their Hagerstown team is leading the SAL Northern division. Though when I look at the Hagerstown team most of their top players weren't big parts of the GCL team last year, so who knows.

This article from domincansummerleague.com says the title series starts today: But as of 9:45 AM this morning there was no DSL game listed on MiLB's affiliates scoreboard. Then about 15 minutes later, lo and behold there it is. Considering it's backed by an $8 billion industry, MiLB's dissemination of information from the Dominican is amazingly lackluster and inconsistent. They can't even get their times straight -- the article says 10:30, while the live box says 10:00. Anyway, game on. At some point.

And just like that, they're underway. 1-0 Sox in the t-1st as LAj Basabe & Lameda both double.
EDIT - Two more for the Sox in the t-2nd. Tovar & Lameda both draw bases-loaded walks, and Rangers starter Jonathan Hernandez is sent to the showers after recording just 5 outs in the game (3 ER on 3 H, 4 BB, 1 K).
EDIT - Tovar doubles in Basabe in the t-4th. Still 4-0, b-5th.

When GCL takes the field today, their players will be representing 7 different countries:
20 - USA (18 from 12 states, plus Olivares & Rivera from Puerto Rico) 5 - Venezuela (Garcia, Heras, Jimenez, Basabe & Acosta) 5 - Dominican Republic (Almonte, Pimentel, Nunez, Devers & Pena) 2 - Panama (Javier Guerra & Luis Ramos) 1 - Mexico (Javier Rodriguez) 1 - Canada (Simon Gravel) 1 - Cuba (Rusney Castillo)

With 2 on in the b-5th, Alejandro Rodriguez comes on in relief and gets the inning-ending grounder. De Jesus tosses 4.2 scoreless (4 H, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 3 K).

DSL update: Rodriguez loads the bases with no outs in the b-6th, but Samir El-Halaby retires all three batters he faces. A run scores on a ground-out, but that's still a stellar result all things considered.
4-1 Sox, t-7th.

The moment that will live in infamy... Scott Lauber ?@scottlauber 1m Castillo caught stealing second #RedSox Nick Cafardo ?@nickcafardo 8m Before the SB attempt, Castillo took off on a failed hit and run attempt. Nick Cafardo ?@nickcafardo 6m Yankee catcher who threw out Castillo was Alvaro Noriega, who had to make a strong throw to get him

Can we assume that the media turnout for Castillo's debut is a record for the GCL Sox? Pretty sure anyone and everyone covering the Rays series made the drive down from Tampa.

Today's uniforms for the Sea Dogs' Field of Dreams game. Yes, there will be corn. Corrections welcome, but I believe it's David Chester, Mike Brenly & Robby Scott (L to R).

GCL MFY get an RBI single t-3rd, Sox tie it in the bottom half with an unearned run on a fielder's choice grounder.
El Halaby closes out DSL's Game 1 win with a pair of swinging Ks, capping off a 4-inning shutout relief stint (3 H, 0 BB, 4 K).

So Castillo's debut was about as rewarding relative to the hype as Geraldo Rivera opening Al Capone's vault. But at least they're not overworking him.
Scott Lauber ?@scottlauber 15m That's it for Castillo, 1-for-2 with single, caught stealing, strikeout. Saw six pitches.

Gabe Speier loads the bases in the t-5th with 2 outs on a single and a pair of walks. Jalen Beeks came on in relief, and everything blew up as he walked in a run and surrendered a grand salami to Thairo Estrada.
Sox trail 6-1 as Chavis bats in Castillo's spot in the b-5th.

Let the comeback begin. Kemp & Ockimey single and Chavis doubles them home in the b-7th to shave the MFY lead to 6-3.
EDIT - Fisher scores on a wild pitch, and Devers singles in Chavis. Acosta's HBP and the Sox have 2 on with just 1 out. They're down just a run now as the Yanquis make their 2nd pitching change of the day.
EDIT - Also, Beeks is still in and has settled down nicely with a pair of scoreless innings and just a ground-ball single allowed.
EDIT - Crap. The rally ends with Derek Miller whiffing (for the 3rd time today) and Acosta getting picked off first following the payoff pitch. On to the t-8th as Taylor Nunez relieves Beeks.
