Addition by subtraction in the case of Johnson? At least there would some cost savings in terms of Johnson's salary. Otherwise, it seems more like hey you take two guys at the end of our bench/taking up roster space and I'll take two guys at the end of your bench/taking up roster space.

BAL gets more major league depth in Johnson (Pearce is hurt, Machado out for year), BOS saves roughly $400k and didn't give up anything of value past 2014 (both players were free agents). Wouldn't expect DeJesus to stay after 2014 and Weeks is arb eligible but likely will be DFA'd (Sept could be an audition to stay on the 40-man).

Jesus, don't *do* that to me. I literally had no recollection that Kelly Johnson was on the Red Sox and thought the headline was referring to Brian Johnson ... was stunned enough that it took me a few seconds to remember Kelly.
edit: ah, amfox, on behalf of others who may have suffered the same fate if you hadn't changed the headline ... you're a compassionate human being.

Interesting!! Almanzar was pulled from the Sea Dog game in the 5th. He was DHing and was pinch-hit for by Chester in that inning. I wondered about it at the time but thought, since he was DHing, that maybe he had an injury and aggravated it. Now we know the answer.

Holt, Rivero, Phillips, McCoy, Gibson, Herrera, Henry, Weeks, De Jesus.
We're cornering the utility guy market.

Don't forget Meneses, Miller, Roof, Dent, Dreily Guerrero & Jimmy Rider.
With Almanzar gone, does Mike Miller take most of his ABs full time? And to fill the Sea Dogs roster vacancy, do they promote Mario Martinez or someone else from Salem, and then slide Rider or Wendell Rijo from Greenville to high-A for the playoffs? Or does one of Pawtucket's surplus UT guys get dropped a rung for balanced depth?

It appears as if Weeks has an option year left: in 2012 he was with the A's all year and optioned on August 20, so he wouldn't have gotten 20 days to burn the option.
Career games by position: 2B, 512; SS, 39; CF, 28; LF, 6. So he's really more of a 2B rather than a utility guy. A 2B of familiar listed stature:
6'0" -- Holt Betts, Weeks, Asauje Pedroia, Coyle
(Who wouldn't love to see the last 5 guys lined up?)
I'm going to guess that they'll be looking to waive him off the 40-man but keep him in the organization.
DeJesus will be an mlfa, but would be a bench upgrade over Mike McCoy for the PawSox post-season.

For whatever reason, I've liked Jemile Weeks for a long time. Still think he can be a very useful bench piece on a good team. Selective at the dish, switch hitter, positional versatility, some speed, and some gap power. Sounds like an ideal utility guy. Big time rookie year from him too a handful of years ago...just hasn't built off of that at all.

I've always like Weeks for obvious reasons...
But I really don't think he has much of a future with the Sox. He's put up fairly consistent solid numbers at AAA, so I think he'll get a chance somewhere, at the very least as a 2B insurance option stored at AAA.
I'd clearly love for him to stick with the Sox, just doubt it happens

If weeks can be who he was rookie year at his peak, he'd be a great utility guy.

For what it's worth, all the defensive metrics suggest that Weeks has been a well below-average defender at 2B so far in his career (smallish sample of roughly 1.5 years' worth of playing time, though), something that appears to be backed up by the scouting reports. While he's got an interesting mix of contact, patience, and speed, it'd be a lot easier to see him as a useful utility guy if he was an above-average defender who could confidently backup SS. Still, buying low on a post-hype sleeper who was a first-round pick is generally good business, especially since it didn't cost them much.

I could see Almanzar having a month where we all regret giving up on him just a bit, and then we move on.
If you think Duquette has a thing for Almanzar, what about the Red Sox and DeJesus? They've now traded Punto, Crawford, Gonzalez, Johnson, Almanzar just to get him on board! Though at this point getting him back means he's back to being the 2nd most valuable piece acquired for Adrian Gonzalez!
(okay I might be just bitter over last night's Webster performance)

Yeah, but you forgot that LAD staunchly refused to part with DeJesus until the Sox threw Beckett into the deal.

You guys are overlooking one important aspect of this trade. Improving the rosters of teams we will be facing in September should be a big goal for us right now.

Wow, I took a nap and missed this trade. Glad De Jesus is back - I think he's a major leaguer if ever given a chance. I wonder if there is trade interest in Holt and these are two possibilities for the roster in case he's traded?
