I forgot all about the Monaroas. Obviously, I didn't miss them, either. But what happened? When were they cut?

I had a post earlier basically saying "the Red Sox (more with pitchers, but sometimes pos players) give the A ball players a late promotion to Salem, and is Margot a candidate." Figured with age, and no playoffs upcoming for either team, they may not bother, and I didn't feel like having the usual suspects give all the reasons I was wrong.
He'll get his two week shot now I guess.

With Webster losing his rookie eligibility, Margot has moved into the top ten of the SP.com prospect list.

For the record, Salem would be in the playoffs if the season finished today. Since Myrtle Beach is likely to win the second half along with the first half, it would face the team in its division with the second-best second-half record. Right now, that's Salem.

Speier: Outfielder Manuel Margot extended his hitting streak to 13 games this month by going 1-for-4. He’s hitting .446/.492/.696 in August to boost his season line to .286/.355/.449 with 10 homers and 39 steals. According to multiple industry sources, Margot will be promoted to High-A Salem for the duration of the season. The promotion underscores what has been an impressive developmental year. Margot has shown a fairly complete skill set, with strong center field defense (including a strong arm), a good approach that has netted a 9.0 percent walk rate and a modest 11.9 percent strikeout rate, the ability to impact the baseball for average with some power (35 extra-base hits, including eight in 13 games in August), and the ability to influence the game on the bases (his 39 steals rank 17th in the minors). His speed/power combination as a teenager is rare. He is one of seven players in all of minor league baseball who has at least 10 homers and 30 steals. No other player in that group is younger than 21. Indeed, the Red Sox have two of the three players who are 21 or younger in all of minor league baseball (Margot and Mookie Betts) to have the 10/30 double (the other is Astros prospect Teoscar Hernandez). Margot will be the third youngest position player in the Carolina League, with his promotion underscoring the notion that he is one of the top handful of position prospects in the Red Sox system. fullcount.weei.com/sports/boston/baseball/red-sox/2014/08/15/red-sox-minor-league-roundup-manuel-margot-checks-all-boxes-on-way-to-salem-promotion-matt-barnes-landmark-simon-mercedes-stays-grounded/I was going to comment that I thought his arm was stronger than the profile says. The downside to his getting promoted to Salem is that he won't be on MiLB.TV anymore. Salem really needs to do something about that.

I actually looked before saying that, so my bad, but yeah, with a possible playoff push, more in line with what they normally do. They were out of a spot when I originally wrote that... If some of those underperforming pitchers with luxury car names keep performing, they should hang on to the spot now.

FYI, the extraneous discussion has been moved to its own thread in the throwdown forum. Enjoy.

As I said on Twitter, this significantly increased the chances that I make the trip to Frederick at the end of the month.

Certainly not more than the manager of salem or anything, but for me, should work as Manuel Margot leadoff, has all the tools to put it all in the game in the leadoff spot, if that does not work beyond the control of manager or someone external to it should let you know. Matty Johnson? Really?
I think it should work with Margot at it, it is clear that during the month of August felt more comfortable at the plate, maybe be a leadoff influenced him. Over time and as we generate more power or not then you can get into the lineup ...

When players get promoted, especially to aggressive assignments, the Sox tend to hit them lower in the order, at least at first, to keep the pressure off. They didn't really do this with Betts, but they have with Cecchini, Bogaerts, and others recently.

Copied from the BA Hotsheet thread:
Mike (Virginia): What were your first impressions after seeing Manny Margot the other night? Josh Norris: I got a very bad look at him. He was overaggressive at the dish at times, took some ugly hacks at others, and loafed his way into an out on the bases. Short, catchable fly to shallow right, it dropped. He jogged to first, then when it dropped he kicked it into gear toward second but was out.
That's pretty disappointing since Norris is a pretty well respected analyst. I've only seen positive comments about his coachability.

Well we don't have to worry about him loafing if he keeps hitting home runs like he's been.

Eh, I assume Norris is smart enough not to form too firm an opinion on a one-day look ... he doesn't say any more than that he "got a very bad look" ...

"serious" to me, means out for the year + some degree of ligament tearing.... which of course is less than a week, then any playoffs. Most annoying part of that is that we'll have pretty much no information about how it healed or what it was over the winter.

So serious that he carried himself off the field, then proceeded to play the next inning and a half in center field, before being pulled back from the on-deck circle with his helmet on and taking warm up cuts... right... makes sense, lol.

Selected #1 by Los Toros del Este in the DR Wnter League.
Devasted I wanted him to play for Los Tigres del Licey.
Update: Rijo selected with the 1st pick in the second round by Los Toros, his hometown club, so they are going to be teammates.

That makes 3 (and probably more) of us. He is a big fan of El Glorioso.
