Shaq Thompson may turn pro: collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/12/17/shaq-thompson-still-mulling-football-future/Won the Hornung Award as the most versatile player (he's a LB and a RB). Scored six touchdowns this year - two rushing, three on fumble returns, and one on an interception. He was also a first-team All-America and candidate for defensive player of the year. Good for him. Hated seeing what he went through trying to play baseball. (Just popped into my head, but puts Michael Jordan hitting .202 in Double-A after probably not picking up a bat in years in perspective as absolutely ridiculous.)

If Shaq elects to go pro, he is projected to be a mid first round draft pick (or higher) in most mock drafts that I have seen.

How cool would it be if the Pats drafted Shaq and or Senquez. Shaq is very versatile .they could use Safety help. I don't think Shaq is big enough for a Linebacker in the NFL.
I forget if he played Safety as a freshman or he played Safety in high school. I know he went to college as a DB.

It would be really cool, but if Shaq does enter the draft, based on what I'm seeing, he'll be off the board long before the Patriots make a pick. He does seem like a Belichickian type player though. Love to see him slip that far.

No, he probably used summers to gain enough credits to graduate. Especially if by "junior" he means redshirt.

Yeah, pretty sure they are referring to his football eligibility being a junior. That's really how they do it. There are more than a few guys in D1 programs that are "seniors" but are taking graduate courses.

Shaq Thompson officially declares for the NFL Draft. McShay has him going 16th to the Dolphins, while Kiper has him at #18 on his Big Board. ESPN.com

Just to update, he did wind up at Louisiana Tech. Just tweeted a photo of the new La. Tech sticker on his truck.

Interesting article Charlie. I believe that doing what you can to get great athletes into the system is an excellent strategy. The new draft rules unfortunately will make that harder. As mentioned earlier in this thread, even an NFL practice squad player makes 100K a year and if he's fortunate enough to make the big club for even one game, he gets three game checks. MLB needs to offer bonuses that can compete with that, but the new rules keep teams from doing so. Does Jeff Driskel walk away from Football for 600K? Thompson really sounds like an athletic monster and a smart kid. Who knows what would have happened had he stayed with baseball. Sure a lot of great athletes with limited baseball experience will fail, but if you sign a bunch you will likely end up with a superstar or two.

ESPNBoston ?@espnboston 10m10 minutes ago Brandon Magee, cut by Tampa Bay Buccaneers, off to Boston Red Sox camp Doesn't necessarily mean much, while interesting. He could just be showing up so that he gets paid some portion of his contract or something. I believe that Shaq Thompson showed up for extended one year for a week or something for this reason, although memory is hazy on that.

5'11 256 per wikipedia. I'm sure he projects to have at least average raw power.
Too bad they changed the rules on contact at the plate. Easy run to pitch run him at 3rd and give him the steal sign. I'm sure if there was a runner on first he would also score.

It's a good thing he turned down all those zeroes so the Sox could offer the money to Mookie.

So should we expect Cherington to work out a deal with Belichick when he drafts Golson and Thompson to bolster the secondary?

From his Twitter, looks like longtime Lowell Spinner Nick Moore has committed to join UGA this fall and play football.
