Did Shaq have a terrible combine or something? I know draft rankings fluctuate greatly, but a few months ago he was a lock to go top 20 in the draft, now he's a 3rd rounder? I'd be thrilled to have him.

He'll be selected before the 97th pick.

Any team who believes he can be a full time safety is going to pick him at any point from 15-45. All it takes is one team.

I'd be thrilled to have him. The Patriots have much bigger needs at DL and CB to draft someone like Shaq to play special teams. You don't waste a 1st round or even a 2nd round pick on special team guys who can be picked up in the late rounds or UDFAs.

He's not just a special teamer-- he's a legit defensive weapon, you just have to use him in the right way (box safety or sub defense linebacker).

Yeah Thompson reminds me of that guy the Cardinals took last year, Deone Bucannon, who had a pretty good rookie season as that hybrid SS/LB. At least I read that cause I have never seen him. Also SS might be a sneaky need. Pat Chung is a starter. I've seen that Senquez Golson is getting some love too. More like a 3rd round type though. Lastly that mock draft was just McShay and Kiper alternating picks I believe not where they believe he's going.

I dunno ... I can't think of a hybrid LB/SS type the Patriots have had. They tend to value the opposite qualities: size at LB and speed at DB. The Pats like versatility, but it tends to be stuff like CB/Safety, LB/DE, G/T on the offensive line ...
But, admittedly, I don't follow college football at all anymore, so maybe Shaq is faster than I think.

My dream would be a DT in RD one, Thompson and Golson next two and after OL help and I'm happy. If you can find A burner opposite La Fell I will take that.

Shaq Thompson goes #25 overall to Carolina. It's up to Golson to become the first player since Greg McMurtry to be drafted by both the Patriots and Red Sox.

The discussion of Shaq Thompson does not do justice to soxprospect readers who may have missed his performance. For the uninitiated who only generally know that he played for the Sox in the low minors: 2012 GCL 0-39, with 37 strikeouts

For the uninitiated who only generally know that he played for the Sox in the low minors: 2012 GCL 0-39, with 37 strikeouts I still remember watching him in a GCL game....fish out of water. He did hit a limp fly ball to RF that day in addition to 2 SOs but he looked so despondent. He had an NFL strong-safety physique and looked every bit the super cut specimen. If one were building a body in the lab...Shaq's would be the model.

Well Thompson is definitely a versatile option at LB and S. That's the only reason I could assume he was drafted so high. He looked like a strong second round pick selection somewhere between 40-55. But, congrats to him!

It's not just versatility. He's incredibly athletic, tackles well, and has good ball skills-- the only question is size, and with the way the NFL has transitioned away from the power run game over the past two decades, that's not as big of a deal anymore.

NFL draft: 25. Carolina: Shaq Thompson, LB, Washington
Analysis: The 6-foot, 228-pound Thompson was the winner of the Paul Hornung Award, given to the nation’s most versatile player. He scored six touchdowns in 2014 — four on defense and two as a running back. He even started at tailback against Colorado last year and ran for 174 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries and caught two passes for 41 yards
Versatility did not extend to hitting a baseball. Did anyone ever have a worse performance in a short professional career? Wow, 0-39 and 37 K's.

Not that he was ever technically a Red Sox prospect, but when is Senquez Golson supposed to be picked?
