2012 offseason - Red Sox 40-man roster
|
Post by welovewally on Nov 22, 2012 6:16:04 GMT -5
Thank goodness Zach Stewart was Ben Cherrington's "must have" in the Youkilis deal. Between Valentine doing what he could to create tension and push out Youk in April, to creating a public issue of it when it more likely could've been managed in-house til the trade deadline got closer, to a negative return, this is another bad trade by the Cherrington/Lucchino Administration (or should we just refer to Lucchino as Dick Cheney?). Yea, this means the Red Sox got absolutely nothing for Youkilis. Disgusting

Yea, this means the Red Sox got absolutely nothing for Youkilis. Disgusting I think we knew that at the time. I wonder if anyone will claim Z-Stew...

hey, we got DeLa Torre for Lillibridge. And DLT is a keeper. Z-Stew, I expect him here for 2 more years til MLFA. Stew age 26, I think he makes it thru. Regardless, he looks like a good bet for waivers in Spring '14, so you can have him back in 16 months.

per ExtraBases. No word there on Valencia and Stewart. Perhaps they were not put on waivers immediately, so Sox could look into trade. I see some of it now on the Twitter feed. EDIT: Removed inaccurate information.

Glad De Jesus is sticking around - he's good AAA depth and may earn a roster spot at some point next year.

One of the props to Bobby Valentine is that he recognized, early on, that Middlebrooks was the superior player and inserted him in Youkilis' spot. This was not accepted by the "Youk, Youk" crowd. But his decison was borne out by the fnal stats.

Sox are at 42 .. too many MLB pitchers. Morales & Mortensen get traded for less than fair value.
EDIT: since Aceves' dream of being in the rotation is gone, I say trade him. And Miller. Keep Morales.

Pitchers (23): SP (5) - Lester, Buchholz, Dempster, Lackey, Doubront MiL SP (4) - De La Rosa, Webster, Wright, Britton LHRP (3) - Miller, Breslow, Morales RHRP (11) - Bailey, Aceves, Melancon, Tazawa, Uehara, Bard, Mortensen, Wilson, C.Carpenter, Beato, Pimentel
Seems to me Salty & Beato are next on the block, plus another reliever.

Beato, Hassan are definitely getting DFA. I would think Nava could be another one. But, I do think a trade will go down soon to free up some spots.

I'd agree that Hassan was getting DFA, but they JUST added him and wouldn't have bothered adding him to the 40 - you'd rather lose a guy in Rule 5 than on waivers, I'd think, right?
They've got to have trades in mind, Beato is the only DFA candidate I see on the "roster" (scare quotes meaning the 40-man plus still-to-sign FA's)
The conspiracy theorist in me wonders if the Sox "found something in Napoli's physical" only to buy time to deal with the 40-man situation. Teams knew he had medical issues before he signed. I doubt they were any different. "Oh, wait, there's a medical issue, we need to spend another two months negotiating language to deal with it..." Unlikely, but just saying, that might be a thing.

The great thing about conspiracy theories is that a few of them are true.
The Sox have to shed a couple of relievers and now is as good a time as any.
I wonder if they're still considering adding a LHH 1b/OF and who that could be -- ideally they'd trade Jerry Sands for a LHH version of himself, because you'd think they wouldn't have room for the addition, Sands & Gomez.

I do agree that a C/RP trade is likely on the horizon to free up spots and clarify the catching position.

Considering that 2013 would be his last option year, the likelihood that he converts to relieving, and the depth at right-handed RP in the system, Stolmy Pimentel could also be a DFA candidate.

How long can teams postpone announcements of signings in an attempt to open up roster space?

As noted in another thread, J. D. Drew's signing was announced weeks after his acquisition was made known. No doubt the club is exploring trade options, rather than DFA a player whom it might lose.

Surprising nobody, Beato DFA to make room for Dempster.

How long can teams postpone announcements of signings in an attempt to open up roster space? Technically, as long as they want, assuming both parties are convinced the deal will go through in the end. Drew's contract wasn't finalized for 52 days, as mentioned above. It also brings to mind Gonzalez and his delayed extension which wasn't announced until May to game the luxury tax.

Post-Hanrahan -
Positional player 40-man depth:
C - Lavarnway, Butler, Vazquez 1B - Gomez 2B - Holt 3B - Iglesias/Holt with Ciriaco/Drew covering 3B SS - Iglesias OF - Kalish, Hassan
Presumably we'll shed a catcher sooner or later, but everything looks fairly well covered, minimizing the chances of having to add a Sutton type mid-season.

I would assume they shed either Mortenson or one of the 5 catchers on the 40 to make room for Napoli

Had we not signed Dempster I'd say Salty for Floyd would have been a match made in heaven. On the present situation, try to get the best prospect anyone has to offer for that package, even inside the division.
Or better yet, add Ellsbury and get Hultzen and Smoak from the M's.
