When Owens gets the fastball up he gets body slammed by good hitters. Not saying he can't be good because look at Cliff Lee but I'm ranking them Barnes, Rodriguez, Owens but Rodriguez probably emerges first at the mlb level. Long term I like Barnes more. his FB plays up because of deception and he has a potential 70 grade Changeup the command and the curveball are the ? but I still rank him the highest of the group

Rodriguez, for me, is this year's Mookie Betts-esque "I want to rank him higher but I need to see him do it again next year" guy. A little different situation, obviously, but I have a hard time completely ignoring his work in Bowie this year where he wasn't great. But if he shows early next season that he's the guy he was after the trade, I'm in.

everything i read about Rodriguez this Summer said the scouts were split some think he has mid rotation upside others think 4/5 SP or late inning reliever.
all of them love the FB mixed results about his secondaries

But if he shows early next season that he's the guy he was after the trade, I'm in. I think that's true for me, too, in the sense that I'm totally convinced that Rodriguez is GOING TO BE TERRIFIC!!!, like I was with Mookie last year ... waiting until he proves more is far more rational and correct than my reaction, but I'm just completely sold on Rodriguez. It's not like he came from nowhere; he was ranked in the 60s last year in the Top 100. He's got great stuff, and his development path looks just like it should for a guy with great stuff putting it together at the upper levels. And I have a credulous belief in the "he just needed better pitch calling" theory on why his stats completely turned around when he started pitching for the Boston organization. It's like believing a BSOHL story in spring training, but I can't help it. He's going to be the best acquisition of this trade deadline, and it's not going to be close. The Eduardo Rodriguez Bandwagon is taking on passengers, and I'm the one sellin' the tickets.

Lets hope that in several years from now we are all saying what we are now; Eduardo Rodriguez was a steal at the trade deadline. I do have a question for everyone though out of curiosity. Has anybody heard any rumors of the prospect Detroit was willing to give up before Baltimore pulled the trigger? ?

Looks like we have two waves of pitching prospects. 1st one is RDLR, Webster,Workman. I guess I throw Ranuando also. 2nd one is Owens,Rodriquez and Johnson. I don't know where to put Barnes. He is in between.
I think Ben values the second wave a little more from what is being said on the podcasts and different people who follow these guys. It's interesting to see what he does this offseason. I just don't want to see a couple of two year contracts given out to 4 and 5 starters out there. That would piss me off.

It's because of the skill and talent of Rodriguez, and the fact that he's only a year or so away, that persuades me not to invest in more than one SP this offseason. Kelly has pretty mush established himself in the top four. Buccholz is, well, lets say, capable of being a #2. We should get one more after the ST audition of the first wave jrrusso mentions. Then there is the Owens, Johnson and Rodriguez group right behind. Don't tie up too many spaces with vets.

Chris - Have you seen any scouting reports coincident with the trade that would lead you to believe there was a genuine, skills or approach-based inflection point and it wasn't just SSS or some other type of anomaly?

This ask BA piece talks about some of the adjustments Rodriguez made in some detail. Here are the relevant snippets: There's also some discussion of some of the changes Rodriguez made in this Alex Speier story, including some more detail on the adjustments he made in Portland (throwing his changeup in any count, pitching inside, pitching to contact). There's also a story about how he met Johan Santana when he was rehabbing and got some tips on how to throw the changeup, though that one seems more puffery than anything else (remember, he was still bad the first two months when he was with Bowie).

Kiley added more details to the Detroit offer the Red Sox turned down in favor of the Orioles one:
Reading his write up on Thompson suggest that there is a bigger chance he ends up a reliever while Rodriguez may or may not keep his new found stuff he was a starter profile all the way. I guess that may have played a part in their thinking. They also play the Orioles much more all throughout the organization so prolly had more info on him too.

The industry generally has been higher in Rodriguez than Thompson this offseason.

Does anyone happen to know how well Rodriguez holds his velocity throughout his starts? I'm not hung up on velocity, and with prior reading, it seems obvious he was encouraged to throw his changeup more often and/or harder. However his once again found velocity coincided with his dominance after the trade.

Even at the time of the deal, I think most people felt as if getting Rodriguez back for half a season of Miller was a pretty damn good deal. Then when he was lights out in the Sox organization, it looked like flat out theft. If he puts together a solid start/first half and justified his stint last season within the organization, I think he could fly up the top prospect charts fairly easily

However his once again found velocity coincided with his dominance after the trade. I have read that he had shown the stuff he showed with the Red Sox before. It just happened that he had an injury early in the season but Norris of BA said he got info from a scout that had seen Rodriguez right before the trade and it's pretty much in line with what he showed with the Red Sox.

Value of his pitches since his return, in Runs per 100; negative is good. Variation in the changeup is from small sample sizes (10 per start).
Date FB CH SL 16-Jul -4.88 13.20 1.72 22-Jul 2.31 -2.80 -0.79 27-Jul -0.31 7.35 2.31 1-Aug -4.02 -10.33 1.23 6-Aug -0.74 3.21 5.81 11-Aug -3.33 -21.63 2.89 Tot -2.08 -0.47 1.16 The FB would rank 4th or 5th among 158 MLB starters with 50 or more IP. It's really a spectacularly good pitch. The change is good and getting better.
The slider is the pitch he's getting hurt on; his throwing it a lot (26 times per game on average) has almost certainly been a reason the FB has been so deadly. More consistency, which is to say, less hangers, has been the only thing keeping him from being a #2.
And he is still not using his cutter and barely using his sinker, if at all. I still think he adds them at some point.

not to worry Farrell and willis are developing him. Besides you guys are using all these stats to show he is great.

He kind of went through a lot in his first two years. Uh, actually Farrell and Willis were bullying him on the field back in ST and pushed him to the ground. That's how he dislocated his patella. Still, that's the kind of injury a gritty bulldog brushes off.

I love to watch Rodriguez pitch. I think when he is right, he has really good stuff and easily capable as a #2 or 3 starter once he gets more experience.
If he stays Healthy, he should be a solid starter for us next year.

Since getting lit up in TB on June 27th and going on a mini-vaca. He returned July 16th. E-Rod's been pretty good. In 10 starts his line is 2-4 w/l 3.21era 67 1/3 IP 52H 25R 24ER 21bb 57 K.

Assuming health (which is dangerous), Sox go into next year with the rotation of Price, Porcello, Rodriguez, Wright and then Pomeranz. That's a hell of a rotation.
